FWIW, Sample plays some very nice solos on Anita Baker's Christmas disc - this is what reminded me of his jazz chops.

After seeing Joe Sample mentioned in the thread on Matthew Shipp's rant on Keith Jarrett, I remembered how much I like and appreciate this pianist, but knowing I have too few of his recordings in my collection I humbly ask the esteemed knowledgeable members of this board for some recommendations - of jazzier sides, that is. I understand Soul Shadows is a solo piano album - any opinions?

I'd go for the vinyl, but $ 25 shipping ... I know it's not you to blame, overseas shipping charges went overboard everywhere in the last two years. I'll do some neditating on it. Strangely, when I select the CD on the site linked above, it says "We don't ship to Germany" .....

Parnsips - The Most Underappreciated Root Vegetable?

In the wintertime, when she's in the mood, my wife loves 'em. She's 100% vegetarian, but her preferences change every month ... -

Labels specialising in French chamber music

Just ordered me a copy for € 5 including shipping - though that music is not a violin feature, it's very lovely. Boismortier is a very underrated composer, IMO. -
Parnsips - The Most Underappreciated Root Vegetable?
mikeweil replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I learned about them twenty years ago, often use them in the autumn and winter time. In a mix with other root vegetables, they are great. When available I throw in a bit of root parsley, which makes the taste a bit more intensive. -
Chuck's right - complete list.

Finally ordered my copy of the Fischer - I know the music is excellent, but I'm looking forward to the great sound you coax out of these tapes. It would be great to have a simple list of your reissues somewhere here. Just artist's name, title, issue number.

Edward Simon Trio: Live in New York at Jazz Standard
mikeweil replied to CJ Shearn's topic in New Releases
I love Simon's playing - but his partners are not among my favorites. Some samples anywhere? p.s. Alright, found some ..... I like him better in a rhythmically tighter Latin setting. His touch is great. Maybe the best of all on the scene right now. -
FWIW, here's a preliminary version of my discography of that band - some errors in the original credits had to be corrected regarding instrument attributions. p.s. I will attach the disco later - there's a minor mistake I want to correct before uploading

That third LP was on CD only in Japan: The Chant They also backed Shirley Scott on her LP Mucho Mucho:

Juan Amalbert, the founder and leader of the Latin Jazz Quintet, ist still alive and located in Scandinavia, but not very communicative. He once objected when I quoted the personnel problems the band seemingly had as stated on the Prestige CD reissue. He should know. Either some band members hijacked the band name when recording that second album for United Artists, or he was not available. The band was good, one of the better Latin Jazz groups around at the time. But this Prestige CD gives a better picture of what they could do.

Jack Sheldon - jazz trumpeter and actor/comedian. -
I have the Mosaic box as well as a Japanese CD (CJ28-5128) released in 1990, IIRC. Both have that reverb. Van Gelder used to add this during the mastering to sweeten the dry sound of his parents' living room, AFAIK. If you listen closely you will find it is not present on the two alternate takes, I can clearly hear the difference in the opening piano passages on both takes of "Walkin' The Fence". The alternates are "dry".

Very sorry to hear this ....

Happy Birthday! Always liked his playing, a solid, reliable and always gratifying soloist, from early on in his career. The earliest I know are some Cal Tjader sessions in California on Savoy and Fantasy.

Thanks for sending the download link. As I will leave for the Baltic Sea on Thursday, here are my thoughts on first listen: Track 1: This sounded familiar ... and indeed, it is a track I thought was a perfect BFT item but never had the opportunity to use. IIRC track C5 from this album. Great to hear how the sound of this player changed audibly at least twice in his career: From a Hawkins-Byas inspired tenor player to some California Cool original to some heavy Coltrane influence. Track 2: The same saxist, for sure, in his post-Coltrane-influence phase; Woody Shaw on trumpet. From a mainsteam album? Don't have the time to check. I still like this, and the sound of the Rhodes player. Nice. Will have to pull this out after my vacation. Track 3: Sounds familiar, too ... makes me write while I think: California big band? Conte Candoli? Gerald Wilson? Again, that tenor player who was kind of ubiquitous on the L.A. scene. Very nice track sequence ... Should be from some live Gerald Wilson LP. Now I know it was that peculiar musical energy a Wilson chart projects that sounded familiar. Track 4: No idea who this is. I have to admit I grew tired at a certain point of those post-Coltrane-MyCoy modal explorations. Was nice back then, and fun for the players, but do not feel an urge to listen to this any more. But this is a nice sax player, I love the way he renders that almost child somng like theme. Track 5: Nice theme. Like the bari, but have no idea who it is. Track 6: I regret I sold that LP. It sounded terrific, like most Contemporary recordings, but I never could make up my mind whether that flutist was simply trying, not very well trained, or intenionally sounding like that. Perhaps it was just that I needed something more conventional back then. From this album, IIRC. Track 7: Hmmm ... sounds like one of Hutcherson's California bands, or the pool of players it was recruited from. Nice. Maybe I still have that somewhere ... Track 8: More post-Coltranesque soprano ... oh well .... that's an excellent trombonist with great chops - Rosolino? Or Jay Jay in great form? More to come ...
