Re: Lateef it would make sense to combine the Savoys and the Prestiges - he sometimes recorded for both on the same weekend. But I wouldn't wait - Fresh Sound was faster. There already is a 4 CD box with the 1957 sessions, more will probably follow later ... Link

You're welcome - that's all I wanted - point out some for those who don't already have them.

That the Universal people, especially those in Germany, are not that knowledgeable about jazz was confirmed to me by a local CD department manager who is in the business for 30+ years - I, too, can think of more sensible combinations and all, but to reissue stuff that is out of print is okay. Sometimes there is a disc that's still missing in someone's collection, even more for the so-called newbies, considering today's market that's all we will get, I'm afraid. We should all give up our jobs, throw our money together and start the perfect reissue label. We'll all be broke after a year or two, but who cares ...
  4. You can say what you will about Jordi Pujol and Fresh Sound, but his compilations make sense, and among the latest is what so many board members requested: Milt Jackson Quintet & Sextet, With Lucky Thompson (2 Cds) Featuring: Joe Newman (tp), Lucky Thompson (ts), Milt Jackson (vib), Hank Jones, Wade Legge, John Lewis, Horace Silver (p), Wendell Marshall, Oscar Pettiford (b), Kenny Clarke, Connie Kay (d) All the tracks scattered over four (!) Savoy and two Atlantic LPs collected on one double disc ... I made me a CDR from vinyl but welcome this release. Link
  5. Please check the tracks with the Chris Connor Discography and if this issue is not listed, please inform the author.
  6. Who is it? He has exactly the same hairstyle, moustache, and beard... No idea who it is! But Not Horace! Of course it's Horace, photographed at the same photo session, just standing etc. I had that LP - no doubts. The clothing is different, but that fits the lyrics on that album, about alter egos etc.

These are twofer CDs - two LPs on one CD. I see some titles that had been available in the same combination from Fantasy or even Verve (e.g. the Bill Evans Empathy), and a lot that has been reissued before, but they're cheap (€ 7.99 over here) and maybe Universal got the message from all those European bootlege labels ... This link has some, but I know there are more. Jazzplus, Ray Brown (Kontrabaß), Milt Jackson (Xylophon), Cannonball Adderley (Featuring) With The All Star Big Band (+ Ray Brown / Milt Jackson) Jazzplus, Bob Brookmeyer (act), Lalo Schifrin Trombone Jazz Samba (+ Samba Para Dos) Jazzplus, Johnny Hodges The Eleventh Hour (+ Sandy's Gone) Jazzplus, George Russell Stratusphunk (+ The Stratus Seekers) Jazzplus, Gene Ammons, Etta Jones, Jack McDuff, Sonny Stitt Soul Summit (+ Soul Summit Vol. 2) Jazzplus, Ella Fitzgerald (Solo) Sings Broadway (+ Rhythm Is My Business) Jazzplus, Quincy Jones (act) Plays The Hip Hits (+ Golden Boy) Jazzplus, Oscar Peterson Trio Night Train (+ The Jazz Soul Of Oscar Peterson) Jazzplus, Stan Getz (Tenor-Saxophon), Charlie Byrd (Gitarre), Luiz Bonfa (Gitarre) Jazz Samba (+ Jazz Samba Encore!) 11. That's how Cannonball was - we all can be be eternally grateful .... I've always liked Mance, but never got around to buying one of his solo albums. I'll have to correct this.
  12. I just remembered that what I like the least is squeaky clarinets.
  13. Of course not. But after listening to the same CD of harpsichord music on different equipment with widely varying sound results, I always judge new audio components with harpsichord and clavichord CDs (and jazz, of course). I have a good friend who loves harpsichord music and the way it sounds on my gear, but on her Hi-Fi it's rather harsh.
  14. Althought that is historically correct, as you might know, since Haydn was rather late in acquiring a fortepiano. What I found satisfying, too, is a well played clavichord, if you like the sound of that instrument. BTW - I never judge the sound of historic keyboard recordings from sound samples - MP3s are too LO-FI for the complex sound spectrum of these instruments.
  15. Just my thoughts!
  16. you beat me to it. ... and me.
  17. If he weren't such a perfectionist, I would like his music much more.
  18. Yeah! :tup
  19. That Dixon-Rhyne CD is nice, although I think a bit heavy in the low frequency range. But Rhyne rules, even in this idiom.
  20. I need this. I always felt a strong affinity to Dameron's melodies and then I found out I share his birthday - February 21 ....
  21. Oh no! He was a nice guy - I wrote him letters in the late 1970's with questions about some records he featured and always got an answer. R.I.P.
  22. Now which of the LPs included in the Mosaic box was not reissued on a single CD?
