  1. Sure, but that's all we're gonna git, I'm afraid ...
  2. BTW - one of my favourite latter day sideman dates of Mr. Byrd is this David Torkanovsky record - his tone has grown a bit fragile, but has some elderly gentleman's charm that I really love.
  3. Pulled mine out the mailbox a few minutes ago, went right on to the player. Yeah, buddies, this is very, very nice. First impression is that it's your best to date.
  4. There's a place for everything. The covers are simply fun to look at, when I'm looking for serious information, I go to other threads. It's that simple.
  5. R.I.P., and many thanks for the music. There are so many Donald Byrd albums I really love to listen to, will spin some tomorrow. He was a scholar as well as a player, but I appreciate that very much, he was very aware of the African heritage without being superficial about it.
  6. My favourite from that album is Harold Mabern's tune, In What Direction Are You Headed?
  7. Well, I do play it! But I agree that it's nicely packaged.
  8. It is. Some publishers make e-books way cheaper than printed editions, some - like that of the Dameron book - make them only a few dollars cheaper. Seems like they make buyers of e-books pay for the printing costs just as well, which is okay in my view. But since my shelves are overloaded in the new flat we are glad for every item not needing shelf space.
  9. So that should be a double disc ... Coltrane developping his music in the studio is interesting for me to get me a copy. But I still long for a CD of the complete February 2, 1966 session (part of which was on the Cosmic Music album).
  10. I have read through quite a bit of ethnological and anthropological literature on eating habits, and never found a convincing explanation - neither religious nor practical - for them. Like religious beliefs, a substantial part always seems to be irrational.
  11. I downkindled it last night and started reading during a break at work today - first impression is very good. I think I will read through this right away.
  12. My wife surprised me with a Kindle Fire for Christmas. Now that I have WLAN at home, it's great - I bought four jazz books for starters, Pullman's Bud bio, Gluck's on the Mwandishi band, Combs' Dameronia, and Bang's Guaraldi book, which I have as a paperback but am tired of carrying around (it's large). Very convenient to use during work breaks.
  13. McFarland is very underrated, IMHO. One of the greatest arrangers of his generation who knew how to write music that is sophisticated but at the same time very easy to listen to.
  14. My thoughts exactly.
  15. Love Nyro's music, this really arouses my curiosity, but the links in the initial post do not lead to samples ...
  16. Most of them came out on two-fers. Four of Patterson's Prestige LPs never were on CD: Mellow Soul with Fathead Newman, his Xmas LP Holiday Soul, and his two trio LPs Satisfaction and Soul Happening.
  17. Finally back online after my move - DL, please, and thanks again for stepping in!
  18. Great! Thanks a lot!
  19. I'm still in the final days of my move to a different part of town - phone and internet connections will be switched on Monday. But I'm afraid I won't find much time to finalize my BFT which was scheduled for February. I have a theme and a wider slection, but the final choices still are to be made. If Hardbopjazz or The Magnificent Goldberg - or both - could step up a month I would be helped ...
  20. Hi Al, download for me too, please - although I'm still in the last few days of removal and won't be able to listen before the next weekend. Vewry much looking forward to your selections ... PM will follow.
  21. Dexter Gordon, IIRC. Frank Butler Joe Pass Elmo Hope? That LP "Sounds from Ryker's island" comes to mind ...
