My first choice for for his orchestral works: I have never heard a more moving version of the piano concerto for the left hand! This includes the only recent recording of the Bolero in the exact tempo the composer wanted - already his contemporaries started to ignore his wishes, much to his dismay. For his piano works, his own recording for Welte-Mignon pianos would be my first choice - about to be reissued, I will post here as soon as it is out.

I have that Bear Family box - lots of fun music inside, and very well played, too. Musicians like that are no longer around, I'm afraid ... The box is still available, btw!

I've seen the James Carter Organ Trio with Leonard King two years ago - the drummer didn't look old enough to have played on a 1975 session. I'd say he's in his thirties .... just my thoughts.

That's a neat description of one of the problems I had with this type of music back then ... Although Pike was American, their groove sounded so .... German to me. A nice band, and very influential, but I was missing some type of black groove.

Back to topic: This is the most stunning new recording of Beethoven Piano Concertos in recent years: About everybody I have talked to about this was surprised, excited, you name it - back to Beethoven. This is performed like the master himself first heard it. Give it a try, and the world will be changed forever.

Got the A.K. Salim double CD yesterday - there would have been enough playing time left for the two alternates from the Pretty For The People session! From the Savoy label discography I know there are still three unissued tracks - but this includes everything originally issued.

That alternate take was on the OJC reissue. This is a bass/drums duet recorded when OP and Max where waiting for Sonny to arrive - it was added to Roach's "Deeds Not Words" OJC reissue. Duh - I made my own burn of the complete session ...

Saw Mr. Bassman today at the rehearsal - we're both too busy with too many things to step up. Since nobody else volunteered, I'd say MG has the go! I'll move Dmitry to the bottom ofthe list - won't delete his name unless he wishes so.

IIRC none of Freddie McCoy's Prestige dates was reissued by Fantasy - one of the artists they never got around to. I can't even recall there were Japanese LP reissues! I guess emusic has only stuff that already was on CD.

I once found a copy of the Pozar LP in a sales bin - bought it for Garrison but it didn't thrill me that much. Not as spectacular as it looks like. Pozar was not that original as a drummer, the date didn't jell, IMO. If I still had it I would give it to you ...

I second the recommendation of Jean-Joel Barbier's Déodat de Séverac disc - I have yet to find a better one. Japanese pianist Izumi Tateno made a double disc for Finlandia, a Warner label, that's pretty comprehensive and very well played, certainly better than Ciccolini. There's a disc on Hyperion with his songs that I haven't heard yet, and one on Aeolus with his organ music, but I find the latter is not nearly as fascinating as his piano pieces. A friend of the composer told Séverac once played an hour-long suite to him that was magnificent, that he never wrote down ... There's a small error: It's Jonas Gwanga, not José - he was from South Africa and a friend of Hugh Masekela et al. That Levin LP is a minor gem, IMO, and helped me a lot to appreciate free improvisation, as Levin was a lot more sensitive than most free from players and did not overpower that much. Calo Scott is great here. Drummer Frank Clayton later married singer Jay.

The CD reissue sounds good, and I think it is still the best of his albums as a leader. Beautiful album. As a sideman, Herbie Hancock's Mwandishi & Crossings would be my top choices.

So I was not too far off track with my slow train association ... Should have gotten the Kirby track that comes next, as I have that and like that band a lot!
