I just learned that pianist Christoph Spendel has passed on November 7, 2025 at age 70. He was one of Germany's best, and had been teaching at the Frankfurt music University.

Well, yeah, but the groove and feel is kinda stiff and cerebral compared to Walton, Carter, and Higgins.

Credit is due to this thread. I knew of him, but only now checked out this, his first album.

I think 14 of these are with Don Patterson. They were a great, inspiring combination.

Eddie wrote several tunes with such angular melodies; Mean Greens is my favourite. The part resembling Freedom Jazz Dance is in the middle, before the sesond and third solos. Ambidextrous is another one, more or less a new version of Mean Greens. What is remarkable about Mean Greens is that the boogaloo riff is present from start to finish, selfless Cedar Walton plays is all the way through except when he solos and Eddie and Roy Codrington play it for him. Walton also plays the riff all through Freedom Jazz Dance, freeing Ron Carter and Billy Higgins. These guys groove the hell out of this tune!

Maybe he has run out of ideas or inspiration. I saw his group with Rainer Brüninghaus and Trilok Gurtu some years ago. Gurtu was the most engaging that evening. He is currently touring Germany with Gurtu.

75th anniversary of the local Bach Festival. Tonight, two Harpsichords recreating the contest between Louis Marchard and Johann Sebastian Bach that never took place. Alexander von Heissen, now teaching in Leipzig, and his former teacher, Eva Maria Pollerus in a nice local baroque church.

Chick Corea's "Is" sessions were the first time I heard him in such a context - still very much worth hearing: IMHO his playing was a little too busy to be one of my favourites. But I love the Directions and Special Edition albums. Saw him live twice with these groups. and it was great. Unfortunately the last time I saw him, in a trio with Foday Musa Suso and Jerome Harris, he seemed kinda uninspired, playing routine grooves instead of trying to sound a little more "African". Foday Musa Suso was great, really leaning into the music, but Jack played like he was watching the performance from his favourite tv sofa.

Just ordered a copy of his solo album. Just the kind of jazz I want to hear at the moment. It is still available. I knew him from Norman Connors' albums, he appeared to me as a very good, if not too original pianist. I heard some Hancock influence as well. The majority of his recording activity definitely was in soul/pop circles, but, like many others, he never neglected his jazz activities. Among his many sideman credits are Woody Shaw as well as Roy Ayers and Phillys Hyman. A true professional.

To me, the best introduction to Parker, and in very good sound. You get it all in one set, without the many alternates, the music as the record buying public heard it back then.

I love that recording, as well as all other Hausmusik CDs.

Different arrangers cooparated on each track - Jeremy Lubbock, John Clayton, Richard Evans, and Nina herself. I only have the basic album, so I can't help you with this track. discogs doesn't state arrangers for the bonus tracks.

Okay - it's always good to state a source right away. R.I.P. - one of the most reliable bassists of his generation, big tone. I bet every member has a few albums with him participating on the shelves.

I know Ray Drummond the bass player, born in 1946. There is a drummer Billy Drummond (no relation) , born 1959. Now who is it, what is your source?

This time I had a weird experience with UPS. I had ordered the Loren McMurray double CD from amazon.de, as this was much cheaper than having it sent from the US, but it turned out they had it shipped from the US branch, which used UPS. The tracking mails I received indicated it would be delivered by Hermes. Next was the infor it couldn't be delivered (although I was at home) and it would be delivered to aneighbourhoof pick up post which was to be located in the town of the delivery bas about 15 miles from where I live. Recepted was signed by some character MILOS. Thus the package was classified as delivered, but I had no idea where. Tracking number was unvalid at the Hermes tracking page! It should have revealed the adress of the pickup station. AI operated help pages at amazon or other sites ended in limbo. Then last night I searched my e-mails and found an obscure one leading to a UPS tracking note. On the UPS tracking pages the number was valid and hinted at kiosk run by some guy named Milos a mile from where I live. I went there today, hoping it had not been returned, and it was still there. The guy was amazed when I told him about the contradictory info I had been given. No hint at the amazon tracking page this was delivered by UPS, and it indicated the wrong town and did not identify the post where it had been deposited. I had amost given up on the package. He could have put it in my mailbox. Usually the services do when the package is small enough to fit in there. The number of dumba....... among delivery services has reached a new high point. I know the pay is as low as the stress is high, but still .....

I must admit I was disappointed, if not unexpectedly, that her voice had aged to such an extent. You can hear what she wanted but could not get anymore ......

I highly recommended the two vokumes on Ocium with early, mostly Okeh trecordings o f Wild Bill Davis. Much fun to listen to.

Just found a copy for less than € 10 from a German discogs seller and jumped at it.
