If a Miles biopic were to be produced. who'd play Miles
mikeweil replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Audio Talk
.... no matter how many threads there were before: Wallace Roney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I have hateable and loveable version of about any standard mentioned here - I chose Stella because it's a tune I simply cannot relate to, no matter if I play it with some band, or hear it done by someone else - I find the changes and the melody soooo constructed, the words don't say much to me - just me, of course.

Horace Silver, Silver 'n' Wood, Blue Note LP from 1974
-
Take your time - I'm still not done with the last bunch of stuff you sent me - I'm buried in work! (Non-musical, regrettably ....)
-
But then - are they known to the people responsible for that series - do they know their place in jazz history? No - they pre-determine a number of volumes in such a series, and the "lesser known" figures are left out. And yes - they don't know their audience - because any audience making for less than 5% of their sales doesn't count.
-
Don't worry - I had to wait two days for their e-mail, but then the note that they would send the replacement and the shipping confirmation for it came all at once. Only problem is: it comes in a big box like the complete set, so my heart jumped .... but ..... hehe .....

There are some really good tracks on Silver 'n' Brass and Silver 'n' Wood - Horace had his vision of a bigger sound (the unissued tentet session is proof of this), and he finally got it made during those years - he reached me with this, at the least. If you're a diehard fan of his maximum sextet sides, I can understand your reservations, but they're not bad, musically.

Canonball: the black messiah

Maybe Cannon would have been a little too big a leader besides Miles .... -
Canonball: the black messiah

..... well, Bitches Brew or the rest, but NOT LIVE/EVIL ........ -
That opens the door real wide for speculations about who actually scribbles them numbers into the booklets - mine was incomplete and the number unreadable .....

Then may be a chance for botique reissue labels to license material from them? Hello Collectables, Wounded Bird, Water, etc. Mosaic could have a field day. And as the material reaches 50 years old, the European labels can go wild. Waiting for that Archie Shepp Proper box! Verve themselves seem to go the download way, considering the number of titles made available in that form in recent years, and the fact that the young folks would rather download than buy a CD and this is less costly for the label, of course.

That's the point, exactly!

... but they're not really bad, either. I agree that the RVGs of the Horace Silver Quintet and Trio are two that sound really great and do the best to make one enjoy the music. Horace's records have been my daily companion for a number of years, and these two especially never failed to lighten up my spirits.

Stella by Starlight

I can only talk about their approach to Cal Tjader reissues - the author of an upcoming Tjader bio informed me that he and Tjader's daughter were in contact with the Verve executives, and they have no interest at all. Money seems to be all they know, the big figures, that is. They don't give a damn about caring for that catalogue. Compilations without end ....

You're the third reporting these pages missing - I wonder why Mosaic doesn't check the booklets before shipping - would save them some money!

Billie Holiday Lady Day box set
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Name a CD shop employee with a thorough knowledge of jazz reissues ..... -
Great choice! I bought this immediately back then, as it featured some of my favourite players: Harvey Mason, Eddie Henderson, Joe Henderson, and discovered a great Hammond practioner along the way. I began to like earlier, more "conventional" organ albums only much later. This still is my favourite Earland album. The synth colors sound a little dated now, but I did and still do like the "spaciness" - the takeoff sound at the beginning is still getting at me. BTW - I think Eddie Henderson finishes a notch above Hubbard on the two numbers where he solos.
-
Yeah, that one has Maggie in top form with his very personal sound and a great rhythm section. Besides that, the other Contemporary LPs, and the Bethlehems - I think he was more self-assured in his later days as compared to the bop era.

Billie Holiday Lady Day box set
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I paid € 41,95 incl. shipping for the Definitive box - not bad for 10 CDs. The discographical information is all there, sound is very good. It arranges the tracks differently from the Legacy set - it has the master takes first and all the alternates at the end of each disc, which makes for smoother listening, IMO, than the stricct session order of the Lady Day box. Not much to read, but having the autobiography as well as the Chilton and Harrison books, that part is covered. There are a few live tracks on disc 10 that are not in the Columbia box ..... I think I'm settled with this until I see a bargain on the SONY box. Thanks for all the input, my friends! -
Billie Holiday Lady Day box set
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That Amazon France price was the lowest I could find .... Now is there anything on the Legacy set that's not in the Definitive box? -
Clare Fischer recorded with Cal Tjader for Fantasy and Verve, but not for Concord Picante - that was Mark Levine on piano on the Latin Jazz Concords! That Salsa Picante was on MPS, issued in the US on Discovery, IIRC - there was a second LP titled Machaca. Both are very good. Poncho Sanchez and Alex Acuna are in the band, and Gary Foster.
-
The rather high price for this put me off - is it worth it? I accidentally bought the Definite 10 CD box, because its description was almost identical to that of the Legacy box, and ask myself if the sound is identical, or better with one of the two ..... To cut it short: Which set has the better sound, and the better commentary? I heard there were problems with defective discs on the Legacy set. Any opinion would be highly appreciated - couldn't find any discussion of this set here.

Yes I see your point, too, and apologize for my emotionalized reaction, caused by my love for these sessions - I have no problem with busy Elvin on top of the percussion and appreciate his engagement for the African part of the tradition very much, where this kind of situation is pretty common.
