For those interested, my Melvin Rhyne disco, Part 1: p.s. the attachments were lost when the board had to be updated. I will try to upload them again some time.
-
Rhyne reported he had no idea it was going to be released, or that he was to be credited as the leader. It was Keepnews' idea to arrange that session after Gene Harris had dropped in on one of Wes' Riverside sessions and played some impromptu duets with Rhyne.

Stereo recordings released as MONO only, cuz tapes were lost
mikeweil replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
The last small group sessions before the Ray Ellis sessions were recorded in stereo, but the stereo tapes have been found only for six tracks. -
Was there a CD reissue, and is it still available?

Rhyne is one of the greatest. He's grown a lot during the gap in his recording career (after Wes' Riversides until 1990, when he was rediscovered). I think there are only two of the records he's on missing in my collection, and there's not a single bad track among it all. But I find his piano playing somewhat insensitive as far as touch is concerned. Almost everything he's recorded after 1990 is top-notch. But I dig his Trios with Wes very much, especially "Boss Guitar".

I had both - the newer one on Legacy sounds considerably better!

That may be the closest one can get to the initial request, especially as the rhythms applied are more Afro-Cuban than African in a strict sense. FWIW, a great record that I would hate to miss. I second most of the recommendations posted - but I see Eddie Palmieri expanding on the tradition of rhythmic Cuban piano stylings rather than infusing free style techniques, although I know he listened to them.

... not on any of his recordings. Stadler's musical vision is a totally unique brand of Third Stream, in some way, but with a lot more meat to it. Jim's right - that Tribute to Monk and Bird is a gas!

The Complete Coleman Hawkins on Keynote

I too had found the set at a great price but without the booklet - the shop replaced it, but again, no luck. I was disappointed by the info in the actual booklet, once I had access to a copy. -
If you care for a fairly avant-garde Hammond CD, try Jeff Palmer's "Opposite Voltage" with George Garzone on Music Artists Co.. This CD is not easy to get - I think Cadence was the only online shop carrying it. His solo saxophone CD has a good reputation, too.

I Find the Tokyo set id one of the best sets of the Monk quartet with Frankie Dunlop - everybody was in great spirits. Spontooneous' evaluation of the It Club vs. the Jazz Workshop is correct, but as Monk fan you wouldn't want to miss either ... if you can afford only one, go for the musically better. IIRC Monk was a little exhausted from a solo piano session before the slightly inferior set.

Your doubts are pretty much on point: The essence of "Latin Jazz" is the connection to the rhythm, and if you dissolve that with outside playing on top, you might as well have any other rhythm beneath. There are bands that try expanding the rhythm as such, in the sense of not clinging fast to it that much. Some examples: Jerry Gonzales & the Fort Apache Band: a modern rumba based rhythm fused with the playing concepts of Miles' 1960's quintet Gonzalo Rubalcaba's 1970's albums on Messidor: the rhythm stretched to its limits. Julio Barreto Cuban Quartet: Iyabó (Connector music): Cuban music plus fusion on the verge of free fusion (that's avan-garde for Cuba) There are passages with free form blowing on top of Cuban rhythms, but only for a short time to create tension before they return to the groove, but any ignoring of the rhythm for a whole piece would miss the point. In Brazilian music, Hermeto Pascoal did quite a few pieces with free form leanings. Not sure that helps ....

My Elvin set just arrived - just three days to Germany! Wow! There is a sheet in the booklet missing (starts at page 3), but they will surely remedy this. But that was the fastest delivery I got from them (or anybody else)! Set # is something like 2384 - second figure could be anything! -
... although my Japanese LP is a reissue of the later Liberty LP with a different cover.
-
There is a Lonehill CD of the Jim Hall Trios that includes the tracks with him playing from the Chico Trio - even they don't seem to believe in the Hamilton Trio with Howard Robert. Whenever I find the time to CDR this, I will think of you ....
-
Great job, Luca! Those Paul Shaprio disc(s) went to the top of my wish list!
-
Is this still available? Dunno, but there were 9 copies available from different sellers at amazon.de, starting at € 10,41 ..... well, now it's 8 copies. Mainieri going back to his Italian roots? Wow!
-
Happy Birthday, El Chico! Happened to play some of the Mosaic set last week - I love this kind od stuff. He was - still is - a great drummer with a style of his own. Yes, that Pacific Jazz Trio is overdue - I managed to find a used Japanese LP of this and can confirm that it deserves a reissue. 1970's Blue Note - wasn't there some United Artists or Solid State LPs as well?
-
Yeah, A heartily welcome! Would be nice to have a list like that for 1940-1949 as well!

Elvin Jones and Gerry Mulligan CJB in "Running Low"!

For me as a percussionist, it was fascinating how Elvin integrated percussionists into his group, starting with one and ending up with a whole bunch. Maybe this is too much for a non-percussionist, but it stands out among the efforts of its kind. It is also interesting to compare these to Art Blakey's Orgy in Rhythm etc. - drummers' meetings, but with Elvin they were really part of the band. I'm glad I'll get one at last - got my order and shipping confirmation today - I didn't have the money at the time it was issued but had sold my LPs to raise some funds which then went elsewhere .....
