  1. I'll get me the Elvin set, for sure ...... next week, when I'll have cleared my bank account.
  2. I can't help it: Thus far I like him best on this sideman date:
  3. I have this only in the Prestige Coltrane box, which sounds fine to me, but I'd probably buy the Hybrid SACd - those I already have sound excellent, and once I upgrade my player .....
  4. One of the very few occasions where I take in an alcoholic drink - especially on moist summer nights or days .....
  5. I always thought these two belonged closely together, and wondered why they hadn't been reissued as two LPs on one CD - they are on the same disc of the Dexter Blue Note box set, and it works very well. Dex sounds very relaxed on these, and almost exuberant, perhaps the upcoming trip to Europe uplifted his spirits, especially after the recent loss of his friend Leo Parker, with whom he was to record - but Leo died shortly before the session, and the results without him sound overshadowed by the loss of his room mate of the Eckstine band (these are the tracks released later in the Blue Note Classics series). With an excellent rhythm section, he sounds as inspired as can be. First choice Dexter, I'd say.
  6. Happy Birthday, and may you never run out of sides to wind!

    Karel Velebny

Speakers Corner did a vinyl reissue of the Nonet LP on Saba/MPS Nonet SHQ with woodwinds a while ago.
  8. If one considers that Shorter was in a period of re-orientation at the time, after leaving Miles and a number of dates bordering on free playing, but which ultimately lead to the formation of Weather Report .....
  9. Harley was only on the Milestone LP The Cutting Edge, recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1974. Don't know if that was reissued on CD.
  10. You're right - there is no such thing as a specific form for a toccata. Baroque keyboard players sometimes even used it synonimously with the term "prelude", although a toccata can stand on its own, whereas a prelude always serves as an introduction to something - but a toccata could be used like this.
  11. So that's why his movies were all over night tv programs here during the last few days .... I always thought he was a nice alternative role model to the super tough masculine guys. R.I.P., Mr. Ford.
  12. Happy Birthday!!!
  13. Yes, a happy one and many returns!
  14. Dan, you'll be missing something - received them today, it's a treat!
  15. So the BFT finally done bit ya!
  16. Savoy Jazz Catalog It says "copyright" 2002 - that doesn't mean it wasn't updated later! But I too can't find any non-Savoy reissues on there!
  17. This is very special to me: It was recorded the day I was born!!! It still sounds fresh after all these years, Horace Silver in particular. And I always thought Curly Russell never got the credits he deserved as one of the pioneer bebop bassists.

    Dewey Left Town!

R.I.P. - another highly individual soul is passing on to the land of spirit and light. Thanks for being such an original musician.
  19. Carter's amped sound has improved quite a bit during the last few years. I hated his sound, but with the pick up model he currently endorses. "The Realist" by David Gage, he sounds pretty natural. But I know he wants that prominent attack 'cause he wants to let the others feel where the beat is. I hated those Barcus-Berry pickups, but the recent models, e.g. Schertler, are excellent.
  20. Same here. Another I'd like to see on CD, although I have one of them on LP, is the two Clare Fischer Latin LPs on Pacific Jazz: Manteca and So Danco Samba - they would both fit on 1 CD, but one of them is Cuban, the other Brazilian .....
  21. I want FREEDOM now! Besides that, the Urbie Green 10" and the Tyrone Washington.
  22. That's the very last Horace Silver not yet on CD except for the "Silver and ..." series! A nice album, not earthshaking, but nice - the only music new to CD in the whole batch!
  23. The bio states Kiesewetter started as a trombonist, inspired by Jack Teagarden, and started singing because Teagarden did - maybe these two records are old favorites.
  24. Yes it is - only the drum computers get on my nerves after a while - but the atmospheric quality of this is great!
