  1. I'm afraid Chuck is right ... If you know the original Erato releases and compare the laughable booklets of the Apex CDs ... Erato was covering much of French music that no other label would have considered.
  2. Indeed tragic. He was one of the best Latin jazz pianists on the scene. I love his Manhattan Mambo CD on Telarc. Very spirited playing. I will give it a spin tomorrow. R.I.P.
  3. How about selling their back catalogue to one of the others? They'll probably take better care of it - some day nobody at Warner's will know what to do with it.
  4. Hope it's still a good one!
  5. That's the way God planned it ....... R.I.P.
  6. You're headed in the right direction, but of course it is not that simple .... Again: I'm more interested in your comments about the music itself than any guesses about who it could be.
  7. Thank you so much etc.
  8. Yes, Bryant was in top form during those years, and the sidemen were excellent. Some of the last recordings of Freddie Waits. I have the Basie/Ellington and enjoy it again and again.
  9. Why do I think of group sex when I imagine playing Ascenscion for that purpose ......
  10. ... which makes me wonder why there is no compilation series on Verve or any other label titled: Music to make love to to by ........
  11. The former, I'd say ...
  12. I had a similar feeling, yes. That's why I sold his Denon CD after a couple of years. He is so intense and personal that he needs very peculiar surroundings to sound different.

    LP to CD

I borrowed a friend's Alessis Masterlink recorder with excellent results. I have read favorable reviews about a similar machine brought out by Yamaha last year, at about $ 800. You can connect the turntable directly to those, but you need a turntable pre-amp. This may result in even better sound.
  14. A non-jazz suggestion: or best ordered from the artists (the page is in German, English version to come, click on shop.
  15. Ooh - that comment gives me quite some relief. Glad to read you like some of it. All the music on this second disc is very special to me.
  16. Them Blue Notes would have made the milk turn sour ..... Little Willies, Milking Bulls - this is all so cheap ...... If it's more country, she at least gets to sound like her real self.
  17. I dug out the Freeman & Twardzik Trio CD on Pacific Jazz a few days ago to get an idea of what to expect the day I can afford this set. I had one of the Fischers on Japanese CD but wasn't too thrilled at the time - maybe next time. I loved the Rowles, but the Japanese CD was dubbed from a Liberty LP - awful. How's the sound in this set? All very individual players. Worth every cent, I suppose.
  18. The bonus disc has 14 tracks - or rather 12 tracks and two bonus tracks - and runs for 77:56 minutes. It starts with a solo piano piece. This disc is like no other BFT disc before, so please listen with an open mind and see where it takes you. It continues the theme of the main disc, but not everything heard here is "jazz". I'm rather curious about your reactions to much of this music in this context. I will comment later on the programming. The first bonus track (# 13) is dedicated to Big Al ... I will provide translations if requested ....
  19. I may be a bit early in starting this discussion thread, but all the discs are mailed, and I will be on the road for the next five days with probably no access to the web. Disc 1 has 15 tracks and runs 78:29 minutes, and starts with the surface noise of a shellac disc. Some misleading hints for starters , and to arouse your curiosity: - The theme of this BFT is contained in the name of the band that plays the first track. - There are two musicians that appeared on my previous BFT # 18. One of them appears on two tracks of disc 1, the other on one track of disc 1. - One musician appears on one track each on both discs. - One other musician appears twice on disc two and once on disc 1. - Still another musician appears twice on disc 1. This is all rather obscure stuff, so please do not limit yourself to posting HAFC, but tell me how you like/dislike the music and its players - to me, exchanging ideas about the music is much more important than simple guessing - you won't get very far with guessing on this one, anyway ... Enjoy the music - and lemme know what ya think! ..... and thanks a thousand times for putting up with all this crazy music!
  20. To represent West German players, I would like to opt for Günter Kronberg (1926-1977) - his main horn was alto, but he played lots of mean baritone when needed.
  21. Oh man - I wish I owned a tuba, could play it, and was there ....
  22. BTW, for those who didn't know: Billy Harper website
  23. This one?
  24. I saw that one Easter when we were down there for a short vacation and a gig. For a Holbein nut, indispensable. The most fascinating to me was two smaller paintings in the first room which show the same physiognomy as one of the figures from the Isenheimer Altar by Grünewald, who supposedly met Holbein during his stay in Alsace - Holbein was there, too.
