Some habits die hard, and calling Monk a technically incompetent pianists is one of the mots stubborn ones. Jon Hendricks reported Monk was at his house when he had written the lyrics for "In Walked Bud" and played a perfect arpeggio with round fingers - telling he could play that way, but didn't want too ....

Very interesting to see how much graphic designers in the 1960's milked the inventions of art in the 1920's and 1930's - that architectural sturucture behind the guitar girl shows that influence, too ...

Okay, so here is the interview - my old friend, Viola Eigenbrodt, mainly used the questions I suggested and insisted I get a co-credit ... -_- Mr. Golson indeed is a very nice and modest man. I reported on the concert in the Live Jazz Forum. Mr. Golson's answers are in italics. Please remember this as done via e-mail and had to be that short as it had to fit into one column of a local newspaper. I intended to ask him some of your questions when we met after the concert but this was made impossible by three Japanese fans taking the dressing room by storm ... he seemed a little exhausted, so we didn't want to bother him too much. I wanted to link to the German version of the interview, but it was temporarily removed from the server of the Schwetzingen Jazz Initiative - I will add this as soon as it appears on their archives pages. I would be very interested to know what you think about his comments - it is his typical modesty that the stated the Jazz Messengers were the high pioint of his career - when I pointed out to him after the concert that I found the Jazztet was better suited to his very prominent lyrical side, he agreed. I find it a very fitting description when he states he sees the same originality in today's musicians, but less diversity. And I have to admit I was delighted about his statement about Keezer - being a big fan of his playing for years.

It's where you put the emphasis - I have always found that there are some talking about hard work, and the others are talking more about the joy etc. you get along the way, although both are talking about the same process. But some students need the first approach, some the second. As far as my observations are over the years, the latter group is more relaxed ...

I attended the concert of Benny Golson with the Galapagos () Big Band tonight - the band had a clinic with him the day before to prepare for the concerts (one more at noon today), and though only 10% are professional musicians, they did a formidable job. They are a local big band existing for 30 years - the clinic was their anniversary gift, sort of. They played several of his well known pieces, of course, arranged by the master himself, Killer Joe, Blues March, I Remember Clifford, Along Came Betty, Whisper Not - the charts were difficult, some of them with individual parts for each of the 15 horns. The band played unamplified except for the guitar and bass, and the soloist's or vocalists microphone, which was a pleasant surprise - the old theater has great acoustics (see next post). Mr. Golson's very personal sound on the tenor saxophone was worth the price of admission alone. After the concert Knut Rössler, the band's leader (who plays a very nice soprano sax - he was the best soloist of the evening besides the guest) told me that Golson had Rico make him # 7 (!!!) reeds - phew .... What never fails to amaze me is how fresh and authentic all those r & b licks sound from one of these old masters - I've heard them before a thousand times, but the way he phrases them is familiar and surprising at the same time. This is greatness ... The band played a very original chart on Body And Soul, but Rössler couldn't remember who wrote it ... My journalist friend who had written the interview and the portrait based on the suggestions posted here, took me backstage, but we couldn't talk very much, as three Japanese fans stormed into the dressing room taking digital photos ... Was there a brand of lipstick called drumstick? Or one in that shape? Otherwise, if it was Joyce, not Cole Porter, who wrote these lyrics, some strong sexual connotations could arise ...

The Parker, Young and Holiday boxes, in any case, have been reissued on Cd. Not the Hawkins one. Luca ← Luca, can you please post a link for these boxes or give a label? I have the Parker on LP, but would like to get the Pres box too.

I have that one - some of the material is extremely rare, especially the 4 tracks from the Imperial EP with Harry Babasin (I used one of them in my BFT). Sound quality is okay for vintage material. Can anybody with a registration at dimeadozen post a tracklist? The do nor accept any new signups at the time ...

I think one test a month on a regular schedule is fine and can be handled, listening-wise - it will facilitate the planning considerably. If one senses he can't make it in time, let the next step up or switch positions. I'm fer it!
