  1. One of the rarest Tjader LPs on eBay - 1971's Tjader, for $ 11.50 plus shipping!
  2. No chance to listen quietly as my wife would complain that I didn't select one of her favourites - well, Pres' trio ballads would work with her.
  3. As if the drug had anything to do with their musical craetions on an inspirational level ...
  4. These are some of the words to the title track of his CD A Love Song, which he read at Milt Hinton's funeral - I hope someone recited them at his as well. Thanks again for the music that will keep enlightening my days.
  5. This was in the mail this morning - good to hear how much he was at peace with himself and the world and the music. A beautiful gentlemanlike statement at the end of a great career.
  6. .... and if the term "genius" is getting in the way of appreciation of any music, scrap it!
  7. My thoughts exactly - when I take a look at my collection for the names of "pop" artists whose tunes were covered the most often by "jazz" artists since 1970, Stevie Wonder always tops the list - I even considered a blindfold test disc made up eexclusively of these!
  8. Thank you so much - this community is indeed invaluable. I will try to convince her to join the board herself and report.
  9. Still haven't got this. ZYX, the German OJC distributor, seems to have trouble providing a copy ...
  10. An old friend of mine, a journalist who loves jazz but does not feel she is too well versed as far as jazz history is concerned, though she informed herself about Golson's career, invited me to join her in visiting a concert by Benny Golson with a local big band in June. She was asked for an interview with him in advance and does not want to ask him any standard questions. To assist her a little, I ask you: What would you ask Benny Golson if you had the opportunity? Thanks in advance!
  11. I've already seen such a compilation - some Latin Jazz anthology.
  12. My Bruyninckx disco identifies George Devens as the vibist on this track, who replaced Tjader.

Paul, would you mind posting more accurate details, especially the LPs issue number and the tracks etc.?
  14. Very nice album - wasn't that the first time James Clay liked his sound on record?
  15. Examples of his excellent charanga violin can be heard on two of Mongo Santamaria's Fantasy CDs: At the Blackhawk Fantasy FCD-24734-2 (tracks 7-14, some tenor sax as well) Watermelon Man Milestone MCD-47075-2 (bonus tracks 13-18, more live tracks from the Blackhawk) The latter includes Mongo's hit album. Any fan of Tjader will enjoy this for sure. Sidemen include Willie Bobo, Joao Donato, René Hernandez, Victor Venegas, Julio Collazo, Victor Venegas, and another great charanga violinist, Pupi Legaretta. The riffs the violins, horns or guitars play are called guajeos in Cuban music, BTW.
  16. Actually, Chombo was scheduled to play this session but passed shortly before ...
  17. We all miss him! Somehow I do not look forward to the day when my Tjader collection will be complete ...
  18. Thanks - I should have thought about Ishtar/Rearward. I should move that on top of my wish list along with two more Rearward items ...
  19. That's a very good album - perhaps the most beautiful of Cal's Cuban Jazz LPs. An excellent example for Cal's "no frills" approach you point out! He can a melody with taste without embellishments and it still sounds jazz. It's a shame Verve has not yet reissued this on CD, except for six of the ten tracks scattered over three different compilations! There's an LP copy on ebay right now!
  20. Mike do you know about the circumstances that led to Verve being bought by Polydor in 1968, or a website that gives more details than the current Verve label history, which is very short? Did the new label owners terminate the contracts of Tjader et al?
  21. ... but this is a page of a Dusko Gojkovic discography. It gives Jazz Man JAZ-5004 as the last reissue, but where the heck can I buy that?
  22. Depends on how far out you want them .... Abercrombie plays on all but two of these: Audioquest AQ CD 1014 - Jeff Palmer - Ease On C.A.P. 949 - Jeff Palmer – Burn‘in The Blues Music Arts Co. MAC 2001 - Jeff Palmer / George Garzone – Opposite Voltage Reservoir RSR CD 137 - Jeff Palmer - Shades Of The Pine Soul Note 121201-2 - Jeff Palmer - Abracadabra Soul Note 121301-2 - Jeff Palmer - Island Universe Soul Note 121302-2 - Phil Haynes - Live Insurgency - Set 1
  23. IIRC Ellington was thinking about a way to persuade Hodges to play soprano on one track of the New Orleans Suite, but .....
  24. Would you mind posting label and number - or even a link? And yes, they both have their charm ...
  25. It's a positive review - Gitte Haenning did a jazz tour recently after many years of singing pop music exclusively, all concerts were sold out. This probably inspired the reissue. It's a very nice album, but I have to admit that Carmen McRae sings some of these tunes way better in her very rare LP with the CBBB. Anyone wanting high resolution scans of front and back cover of the original LP can send me a PM with an e-mail adress to send it to.
