You should be banned for that post .... Now how can someone be so .... I mean the sick people who did this and put it on the web?!?!

Now here's an obituary I do not want to read for some time ... all the best to him! Always loved his bluesy feeling and elegant swing.

There is an earlier thread about this sad news here.

I stick to my original no limits vote - because I think two dics will be sufficient to get one's theme together. I had a look at the test master list - if I'm correct, we had 16 single disc tests out of 25 (Rooster's included), but 8 of the double disc tests were # 13 or later - JSngry's was the only two disc BFT before EKE BBB's (#13). So much for statistics. To suggest a compromise, I would suggest the second disc is a true bonus, that need not be discussed by everybody. I plan my next BFT that way, especially as the second disc will expand the first disc's theme onto wider musical territories beyond jazz.

... cause Shadow Wilson was GREAT!!! (Roy Haynes, too, but Shadow was something else.)

I have one of them on DIW - real good engaging stuff, not a bit derivative, and lots of drive in the rhythm sections.

These organ discs are on my want list, too. Last year I ordered seven CDs during some reduced prices campaign, some Latin Jazz by Emil Richards, some things I don't remember and three CDs by the Mackrosoft - if ya like post-Headhunters funk, this is it (Paul Jackson and Mike Clark are on some tracks). They have funn(k)y titles: Journey to Vaginus etc.

Anyone ever buy a disc from

I did, and I remember that funny message - the second time around they were getting serious ... whatever this means ... -
I was afraid I would read something like this ... Now of course I know these guys and I always liked Rainey's bass playing, but will this make me listen through this?

I still have not recovered from this sad news. Jimmy Woode will always hold a special place in my heart - I saw him perform several times. One particularly memorable occasion was a gig of the Mal Waldron Trio at Mainz in a club that stopped featuring jazz soon after. But I was sitting there about five feet from the musicians (Mal Waldron, Jimmy Woode and Allen Blairman) and was not just listening, but felt like I was right inside the music. I knew many notes and chords immediately before they would hit them. They really got me that evening - Waldron with his stoic calmness, like an ebony figure of an African chief; Woode giving himself totally away during a long bass solo during which he started quoting "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child".starting to sing along, ending up almost crying - Blairman cheered up the scene by walking to the sole mic at the piano and singing "Wade in The Water", clapping his hands. That evening I understood what these songs mean to black musicians. Thanks eternally for that beautiful evening of alive music - I still see you three before me.

Anyone heard/have this? Thanks, as always!

Rooster's official "BFT #25" sign-up thread
mikeweil replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
This will divide the BFT participants into two camps - those who are patient and those who are annoyed, but it won't do anything else. Shit happens, and this particular sort had to happen some day- now Rooster's the poor fellow who's getting the blows. -
You know Mike, I will not go for any Tjader on ebay before I know that you have everything Cheers, Tjobbe ... what shall I say? You can bid on CDs - all I still need has not yet been on CD, so LPs is all I will try to get.

Actually there were two CDs worth of reissues from those last Fletcher Henderson appearances - the first hald was on a German LP I have, the second issued after they reissued the material on CD - the label owners should be the same. There is some obscure German online source for this - they specialize on Volksmusik otherwise - but I can't locate this right now. Do a search for Henderson 1950, there is a thread somewhere with a link.

RIP Jimmy - I will always remember you.

Yes, that's a nice little number - probabbly the best on that CD. Thanks for pointing this out - overheard it more or less until now. This was an album that had me a little disappointed at first - I was so much into the intensity of Cal's band with Mongo and Bobo at the time this one had to sound lame to me - but in fact it's a very good album. A session recorded for Skye but unreleased at the time - Steve Hofmann's series of Skye reissues unearthed it. Found on this CD (was issued on SACD as well):

Thanks a lot! Looks like I'll have to hunt for used LP copies - just scored a rare Verve LP on Ebay.

Only fault is they are very expensive outside of Japan - amazon.de wants € 45.00 for the Keezer/Locke!!! I guess I'll have to order from Japan.

Could just as well mean the bastards want to profit on all the talk about them going OOP. Or the new owners know better how to promote the CDS through retailers.

How Ofter Do You Replace Your Stylus?
mikeweil replied to Brownian Motion's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
This procedure is not recommended - it wears out the grooves faster than when you are using the recommended tracking weight as the stylus vibrates in the groove much more than it should - and thus it results in higher stylus wear as well. You can take a look at it with a small microscope when its new and check from time to time - but keeping a list of playing hours may be the simplest way to keep track of things. -

I only have his Children of All Ages LP, but who else did such a unique project on record? God bless his soul.

Read this only now - what a shock indeed! One of the major figures of European jazz is gone. And way too young. RIP, NHOP - your bass tone will keep ringing in my ears!
