  1. I suggest those among us who want to get them from Zweitausendeins better rush out - I was in the Frankfurt shop today, they had only half of them, the others were sold out already with no plans to get them again ... I ordered the rest from the website, where they are still listed.
  2. Regarding the Historically Speaking box: If the price is reasonable, go get it, it's a great rarity! Disc 1: The Inferno Suite (4 tracks) previously unissued, not available elsewhere, recorded April 15, 1967 5 tracks from the New World Session recorded January 26-28, 1963 3 tracks from the Faces Suite, unissued recording December 14, 1967 not available elsewhere 4 tracks from Sax No End, June 18, 1969 Disc 2: 10 tracks from the All Smiles and More Smiles sessions, May 1968 and May 1969 4 tracks from the Folk Songs session, July 31, 1967 previously unissued, not available elsewhere 5 tracks from the Gyson session, December 15, 1967 previously unissued, not available elsewhere The unissued material makes it worth the price alone. The music is great throughout. It was originally sold for the equivalent of 75 $.
  3. I dug out my copy of the book (the 1983 DaCapo paperback edition), and there it is at the bottom of page 273: The sentence Chuck quoted is following immediately after this. Gitler wrote a new intoduction to this edition, so he could have known. But I don't blame him. B)
  4. Just got one of those e-mail error messages after posting!
  5. If you dislike fusion, be warned that the second Warner CD is half of this. I have all the Warners and Verves, the latter are all good, his strings album is one of the best newer recordings of this genre.
  6. I was lucky to start intentional listening to Beethoven's piano music more or less in the order in which he composed them (although my mother played the records with later sonatas a lot during my childhood), and on on period pianos. Some of the routine sounding figures make more sense on the characteristic sound of old Viennese pianos - the modern instrument tends to sound too neutral whereas the old pianos have a strong bold lyricism not unlike Monk's piano stylings. I experience that most often with so-called "lesser" composers of the 18th century that tend to sound repetitive or even dull on modern piano. Listening to the music in the order he composed them makes it a lot easier to appreciate his amazing progress.
  7. Thanks for all the nice pics, y'all!
  8. I had the 20 LP Basie Columbia set by CBS France and sold it, as the many alternates made it a rather unpleasant listening experience. On LP having only three titles on one side gets tiring. If they do a complete CD edition, I'd prefer different CDs for masters and alternates, or a separate master take edition. On the other hand, I sure wouldn't get tired of listening to four different Prez solos over one theme ....
  9. What do you run a jazz forum for? In the first place, for the love of the music, and if there's only a hint of a want to make a profit inclined, it will turn back on you someday. It's just as ridiculous as prohibiting links to other sites. (Of course rules to prevent links to porn sites etc. make sense.) We're still far from a free and tolerant world, if we don't turn the virtual world into one, who will?
  10. I agree that Coltrane sounds much more"together" on this date than on others of the period. A beautiful record, a real gem, and perhaps my favourite early Trane. And Dameron's compostions are great on that one!
  11. You honestly believe you'd still be in that position by now????
  12. Strange, as Jamal recorded for Cadet well into 1968. Bruyninkx does notr list that LP. Would you mind posting tracks and personnel, and of course production credits? Thanks!
  13. Thanks, Swede, for checking that out, this is the page I had in mind. You can learn a lot about other things besides music here ...
  14. Basically a good idea, but adresses should be kept private, I think.
  15. They used to have a link to their page on the series on the new releases page, but it isn't there any more, sorry, can't find it. If you try a search with the series name at the sites of mail order shops ....
  16. What would we do without dem bastards at Dusty Groove!
  17. There was a trio session with Billy Higgins on the Japanese DIW label.
