  1. Well, I do have my mohair suit on
  2. Next new arrival The Quartette Tres Bien - Our Thing [Decca, 1967] Another cheapie, vinyl in lovely condition. My first exposure to QTB. I can't help but wonder whether they feature at @Teasing the KoreanMansions sometimes.
  3. https://thebluemoment.com/2023/07/17/adieu-jane-b/comment-page-1/#comment-40658
  4. Chet Baker, Jim Hall, Hubert Laws ao - Studio Trieste [CTI/Polydor UK, 1982] One of today's arrivals, I don't often find myself in CTI-land but this was recommended and was cheap.
  5. Not a name I know so shall look forward to acquainting myself. Thanks
  6. I played my original recently and thought it sounded great, apart from a short scratch I'd forgotten about. I'd love to compare the two.
  7. On first listen, a very worthy addition to the discography. The sound quality is certainly good enough, better than the recent Seattle. The two tracks not on the Vanguard box, 'Africa' and 'When the lights are low' are probably worth the price of entry alone. Dolphy's contribution on the latter stood out for me. Of the old warhorses, 'My Favourite Things' sounds particularly good, I thought. I'd say any Coltrane fan is going to get something from this, Dolphy fans possibly even more so
  8. John Coltrane with Eric Dolphy - Evenings At the Village Gate
  9. CD1 is a blast! The Elvin track is one with the more compromised SQ, very 'live' iirc
  10. Peak IPA a year or so ago in one of my locals that rightly prides itself on its selection, all eight or so pumps were IPA or a variant. Made me crave a good old fashioned pint of bitter
  11. This is good news. Means I can ditch my not very official copy.
  12. Porter's where it's at for me. Has been for a while I agree that the IPA fashion has seen off too many other good beer types, including the original India Pale Ales.
  13. All three of those thoughts make me want to hear it Elvin was the same for the live A Love Supreme too. Must have always got there first...
  14. Joshua Jaswon Octet - Polar Waters [Ubuntu, UK 2023] A completely new name to me when I heard a track on the radio last weekend. All our recent chat about British Jazz, here's a writer/arranger/player who sounds to me steeped in that tradition (even has a Norma Winstone-esque vocalist in the frontline) but at the same time presenting something modern and fresh. A real find
  15. That was a special album for me when it came out. Such a great lineup
  16. That's a really good album as well as a great cover illustration
  17. I don't know 'So What' so I shall investigate immediately. I'm a fan of ' Breath' fwiw. Togashi and Yamamoto are a dream team for me
  18. Someone really should do a blog on 70s music...
  19. Just been surprised checking when 'Impressed With Gilles Peterson' released. 2002, I thought it was earlier. That release and the accompanying reissue of some albums featured on the compilation really opened my ears to that generation.
  20. I saw Garrick in the early noughties doing a Sunday lunch pub gig in Herts. A trio, he played electric piano. I got the impression there was maybe three other people there who knew who he was. The rest just enjoyed their lunch... As someone who started listening to Jazz at almost the same time I'd agree. The Nucleus albums had had some cross over to rock listeners of my acquaintance before then, a lot more so than Garrick who I hadn't heard of in mid 80s. In the mid 80s we were having a 'London Jazz Revival ' which meant for me a lot of exposure for Courtney Pine, Steve Williamson, Andy Sheppard, Tommy Smith et al. My exposure to the Garrick's generation really only came with Gilles P's compilations. .
  21. Never heard anything by him that I didn't like. A considerable voice. 👍
  22. Finlayson seems to record rarely outside with Steve Coleman. I need to check again as I think he's good Two UK based players on that list, Ahmed and Jurd are doing some impressive stuff. I particularly like Yazz Ahmed.
  23. I have that album, will dig it out tomorrow for a listen What a voice. Just the sort of thing I was thinking of when I started the thread
