What live music are you going to see tonight?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Last night at Oto, Mike Reed's Separatist Party. Amazingly inventive two sets of very powerful music. Basically Bitchin Bajas with Ben Lamar Gay, who was outstanding, Reed and new to me Marvin Tate Tate's an astonishing performer, declaiming, preaching and singing his poetry/lyrics. The rest just hit the most insistent grooves, lots of AEOC in there I thought, Lamar Gay was Lester B's ghost at times. I've always rated Reed as bandleader and as one of the most tuneful drummers I have heard. He's done it again with this group. What is in the water in Chicago? I get too far fewer gigs than I'd like to these days so it's good when one is just so good. A special Oto night. Only Oto is going to book this band in London -
I played a couple of discs recently and really enjoyed them. The tune selection is interesting and I agree the playing is too notch, from all of them. The other Braxton Standards I really enjoy are the Steeplechases. Pleased to have this to dip into. Can't see playing all the discs in order as I did initially again. The Leo you mention, is that where AB plays piano?

Do Old And New Dreams count? If so, then their albums definitely

Bang, bang, bang, bang, what a run that is Pim, do you have a cross on the floor where you stand to take the photos? You're positioning is very consistent I've noticed 😃

Wayne Shorter Zero Gravity documentary
mjazzg replied to cliffpeterson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Second episode has excellent coverage of Weather Report and some of the tensions therein. Also, covers the personal tragedies in Wayne's life up to the air crash. Again, lots of Wayne speaking, movingly when discussing his daughter and wife -
😄 Probably Hasselt and Warszawa. I don't know the Namtchaylak collaboration

Working through them? It's an interesting body of work, including some later ones on other labels. Saw a performance at QEH which was quite unlike anything else I had heard then or since. Fascinating

Wayne Shorter Zero Gravity documentary
mjazzg replied to cliffpeterson's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Just watched the first "portal". Interesting enough, a lot of Wayne talking which is good. Usual talking head format alongside still photos, cleverly intercut in places and, the increasingly present in these docs, animation. Really nice clip of older Blakey and Wayne -
Waiting for my LP...

Yes, strictly CDs and downloads from them from now on It was actually a Harish Raghavan that your enthusiastic post about prompted the purchase. The album is good which was a consolation, delayed satisfaction

I'm in the UK and my last order for an an stock Whirlwind LP title took 2 months! Their excuse was that they warehouse and ship from southern Europe where the extreme heat meant it wasn't safe to ship LPs. I called that the BS it most surely was

Thanks. I shall trawl through the CD collection to find him, with Leandre is my first thought

First listen to this new arrival. Purchased this week after a mention on a thread here. I can't remember where or who, possibly @JSngry, whoever it was, thank you. This is so up my street How's that? I have him playing on someone else's date somewhere and unless I can remember who that is I might not hear it again for a long time...I remember being impressed I really like the GinParis Session. I have the LP of the JoJo in the post to me at the moment

A career much more as a sideman than leader. Lovely player, he's still very much about. I used to see him regualrly in Kenny Wheeler bands. This is good from around that time, if I remember correctly and earlier. I'm sure @sidewinder will be able to provide a better overview
