  1. Why ever not? A photo taken of her used later for an album cover. No mystery there, surely "The cover is a photograph by Peter Hujar of Warhol Superstar Candy Darling on her deathbed (aptly titled "Candy Darling on Her Deathbed").[5]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_a_Bird_Now "1974 photo of Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling on the cover of Antony and the Johnsons' second full length, I Am a Bird Now, is the perfect complement to the ghostly hymnals that flit and sigh behind its black and white shadows. A melancholy but arrestingly beautiful image, it depicts Darling on her deathbed; bright flowers float behind her upturned arm like a cluster of soft, pale moons radiating light onto the bleached sea of sheets in which she's drowning." https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/467-i-am-a-bird-now/
  2. Truly great album by a great artist. I hope she releases something again soon. I miss The Johnsons but Anohni's debut was an interesting development. One of THE best live experiences ever seeing A&tJs Candy, darling...
  3. And how does that stand up now? I remember the fuss when it came out, it was never really going to live up to it all. Crosby is such an important figure.
  4. Disc 3. having finished Disc 2.
  5. I don't know the albums under discussion but do know a thread on this era of Japanese Jazz will lead to bankruptcy (I'm only just readjusting after Rabshakeh's European Modernism thread) I thought we had a thread on the freer end of the spectrum from this time period in Japan but can't find it with a search but I'm not functioning very efficiently today so it's probably out there
  6. My box just delivered, also fulfilled by Squidco. Disc 1. playing now. Until now I've only dipped into the download copy so now starts the real listen.
  7. Thanks. just ordered the B&F 2CD, should have had it years ago, very remiss
  8. I can still remember that day I heard it for the first time, about 40 (ouch!) years ago. edit to add: does anyone know if the Blood&Fire reissue is still the best about or have more recent releases surpassed it?
  9. That's such a heart-warming gesture. I'm sure your friend will be bowled over
  10. That's brilliant, hope it's all up to snuff. I'll await reports from the front with anticipation. I don't really see anyone being fooled just folk making considered decisions as to whether to purchase or otherwise. Some are, and I'm sure they will be rightly chuffed others aren't and I suspect they will not regret it. Everyone happy
  11. Didn't know that about The Congos. That's some stardust sprinkled right there.
  12. Welcome back MG, nice to see 'breakfast with...' selections once again I don't believe so, not on the BC page at least. Its a nice document, not the greatest SQ, bit boxy
  13. Another true original and genius departs https://www.theguardian.com/music/2021/aug/29/lee-scratch-perry-visionary-master-of-reggae-dies-aged-85
  14. I was about 5 years behind you. Think it was Rhythm Records by then? Jazz still downstairs.
  15. You've convinced me
  16. Thanks. Mythic status deserved by the sounds of things. Merlin's ha! I found a nice Shirley Scott in my only trip there, no added extras sadly. I've been wondering about. trip to Stranger Than Paradise, not sure I have the necessary Hackney attributes any more. I'm on their mailing list and their pricing's a touch rich too
  17. That's the way to do it
  18. Waiting for it. Her lockdown album with Dezron Douglas hit a spot for me too Edit: found it on Tidal
  19. That Hodges is a lovely cover. Also washed up at the seaside?
  20. There wasn't any vinyl out except on the walls when I went on my day off trip (this was some years ago). Combined it with a trip to the Putney Debates church nearby which was also disappointing. That's sarf of the river for you. I've never been to Alan's, it's almost reached mythic status!
