  1. Roy Ayers - Virgo Vibes [Atlantic, 1967 mono] been after a nice copy of this for a while, arrived this morning. Can't help but think that if this had been released on BN it would be much more well known. What a line-up.
  2. Track 8. This sits on the cusp of "really interesting" and "a bit too much" for me. I fear the violin's going to take it into some kind of Mahavishnu region, not somewhere I'm comfortable. However the piano really grounds it. I've noticed a lot of very active bass playing throughout the BFT. It's just gone all "gypsy jazz". Intrigued but unsure whether I like it or not. I feel I should know the violin and piano players. Leroy Jenkins is my default guess but I don't think so. taking a break now Angles 9, a great band. I've enjoyed all the Angles albums over the years but the most recent really hit home for me. I'm now really intrigued by the trumpet player on track 3. Curson didn't record for too many labels I don't think so I may have to do some research. Marge, maybe? That Bonner is lovely. Is the rest of the album similar?
  3. OK, so dipping my toe in, not having read the rest of the thread... Track 1. Great start, anything with vibes gets my attention. I don't recognise this but I'm wondering if it may be Karl Berger. Or, sounds like one of the Swedish bands like Bengt Berger. Or is it more contemporary, Angles perhaps, that's sounding more likely as it goes on. I will definitely be following this up come the reveal. Track 2. No idea, a bit too hyper for me, drummer needs to calm down a bit Track 3. It's a while since I've listened to him so it's probably not Ted Curson but that's my first guess and it is a guess. It's not Hannibal or Tolliver, I hope. Now I'm wondering during the piano solo whether it was Hino on trumpet. Track 4. Interesting, I like it but don't recognise it at all Track 5. Is this Petrucciani and Danielsson? Track 6. This makes me think of the Kenny Cox albums on BN. Did they have el.p.? I think so, been a while. Or a later Contemporary Jazz Quintet for another label. It's good. Track 7. Just lovely, best track for me so far. No idea who it is but I'll be following up on this one. I hope it's not one of your obscure and expensive Japanese purchases @Pim more later I shall but I have added your BFT to my recovery routine!
  4. I am actually off work after an operation which is why I've not sampled this yet. I may try over the next few days.
  5. more interesting sounds from the current London scene
  6. Strata East Steve Coleman or Steve Lehman
  7. I'm hoping it might turn up here https://dochouse.org/ They showed the Milford Graves doc. I'm sure your wife will enjoy a trip to Bloomsbury...
  8. Is that as good as the cover? Mr Preview
  9. I don't think you'll regret it, John
  10. Self reliance, admirable
  11. Cue the gnashing of "no CD" teeth... It's good but the sound isn't too great, I thought. A bit boxy
  12. Wadada Leo Smith - Trumpet [TUM] Disc 1, first listen
  13. That Cage box is tremendous. I've been playing it a lot
  14. Yes, it works well. I've just ordered his new one after listening to it a few times, impressive I find that cover really inviting, screams 'listen to this and have a good time'. I only have one Lewis album, the Clifford Brown tribute with Lem Winchester who was the main reason for buying it. I'm going to try and listen to this one though. Edit to add: found the Lewis on Spotify. The era of instant gratification...playing now
  15. Nat Birchall - Mysticism Of Sound (Ancient Archive Of Sound, 2020)
  16. That's a great story. I get the impression from my communications with them that BH is very much an almost volunteer-based organisation, a very well run one. So maybe push came to shove it just made resource sense for them to employ Squidco's fulfilment expertise. Two good organisations working together.
  17. Grant Green Peter Brotzmann or Frank Wright
  18. Is there a companion issue that is 'Partially' Live?
  19. Well, why didn't you say so It says what it is in both paragraphs/links in my last post above - Anthony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now. Hit the wiki link in my previous post for full info if you need any more
  20. Weirdest listening experience, so far, 'The 59th Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. Neil Charles, ladies and gentlemen! Terrific performance all round, mind. To think I had a ticket but couldn't go... Five discs in and the set is a treasure trove which is going to be mined for years.
  21. Why ever not? A photo taken of her used later for an album cover. No mystery there, surely "The cover is a photograph by Peter Hujar of Warhol Superstar Candy Darling on her deathbed (aptly titled "Candy Darling on Her Deathbed").[5]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_a_Bird_Now "1974 photo of Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling on the cover of Antony and the Johnsons' second full length, I Am a Bird Now, is the perfect complement to the ghostly hymnals that flit and sigh behind its black and white shadows. A melancholy but arrestingly beautiful image, it depicts Darling on her deathbed; bright flowers float behind her upturned arm like a cluster of soft, pale moons radiating light onto the bleached sea of sheets in which she's drowning." https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/467-i-am-a-bird-now/
