Would love to see it! The rooms of Suprematism are outstanding - proper 'Shock of the New': like a cold shower that takes your breath away and refreshes (sweltering London similes alert)
Thanks Clifford. I was hoping you'd chip in. I know the Hampels but not the others edit to add: Not sure I'll be hearing the top one any time soon as it's £413 on discogs!
What do you think of this one? Is it a collective/group performance with certain instruments featured on each track, or Stevens in duo/trio with various performers? It's a lovely album. It's almost exclusively Ensemble with featured players on particular tracks - stand outs for me would be Nigel Moyse on acoustic guitar, Paul Rutherford trombone and Simon Picard on tenor. It has some very hummable themes that do have a folkish lilt to them with a marching band motif from the brass heavy ensemble often showing through - but it's an English marching band from years gone by and in no way martial. Listening tonight I've heard some connection to SME's Oliv but i can't quite pin that down it just seems to be the obvious LP to put on next. If you like brassy ensemble playing, good tunes and fine solos I think you'll like it. It's probbaly the least 'out' Stevens LP I have but no bad thing for that. and now playing....Spontaneous Music Ensemble - Oliv [Polydor]
Just listened to the Cuypers on Spotify. Marvellous, thanks Paradiddle. Breuker playing Dolphy sounds an intriguing prospect too but sadly not on Sp so will need to look elsewhere keep 'em coming folks
I've been enjoying greatly Breuker's contributions to Harry Miller's 'In Conference'. I also enjoy him with Gunter Hampel. Any suggestions for other recordings, leader or sideman? I'm not discounting the importance of his larger ensemble work in the Kollektief and elsewhere but I'm interested in hearing his playing in sparser contexts
Harry Miller - In Conference [Ogun] w. Willen Breuker, Trevor Watts, Julie Tippetts, Keith Tippett, Louis Moholo when a frontline of Breuker, Trevor Watts and Julie Tippetts get going it's a thing of wonder
Glad you are enjoying it! I am again right now! interesting to hear the first side is more 'inside' than I'd imagined ths combination producing and then you flip and get what i was expecting. That's not to say Side 1 isn't anything but great playing
Sam Rivers & Mario Schiano - Rendez-vous [Vedette/Red Records] thanks to Leeway for posting this a while back and alerting me to its existence. Copy duly chased down and it's a great listen
I was dubious about this and prepared to punt it to someone else, but it's actually very good. Thanks Clifford, that makes me feel a bit better about my punt (different meaning over here) on it as I await it's arrival from Portugal. There's always that dread of the 'arranged marriage' ending in tears
I think that maybe the intensity has changed rather than waned. I'm with you on the development of the playing but hear an intensity now more centred in economy of expresion with a measured depth replacing the fiery outburst of old (which he still sometimes pulls out) something most noticeable in his tenor playing which now has a majesty unequalled elsewhere I think. The last two visits of Schlippenbach Trio have been some of the most intense playing I've ever heard. "The brilliance remains" - couldn't have put it better myself, Steve
Absolutely with you on those ECM trios And for a recent release I might suggest John Escreet Trio + Evan Parker 'Sound, Space and Structures'. I can see this list getting very long and erwbol getting very poor.....listening now to Whitstable Solos on Psi the most recent solo release I think and a lot more available than some of the older ones
