  1. Spontaneous Music Ensemble - 'So What Do You Think?' [Tangent] finally found a relatively reasonably priced copy, in nice condition, so went for it. No regrets
  2. Have you tried ordering direct from Guy/Homburger through their website? Very friendly and efficient service but I can't speak to the $ cost not overly cheap in £ Intakts are $25+ here in the UK unless you catch them early at Amazon where a bargain can be found Ubu - I looked up Wichihalder after the gig and yes, there's a quartet with Schweizer which I think I'll investigate http://www.discogs.com/artist/2444390-Jürg-Wickihalder-European-Quartet
  3. I've seen him a few times. Los Cubanos Postizos were great fun and I'm sure to anyone versed in Cuban music probably displayed all manner of deficiency but they could really play what they were playing, Ribot included. With Grimes and Taylor he played a gamut of guitar styles, some of which I enjoyed more than others (hated the singing). In Zorn's Electric Masada he hit the Jewish surf aeschetic square on and again impressed and also managed to shine in the more chamberish Bar Kokhba ensemble. But the best experience was an improvised trio with Han Bennink and Evan Parker - company I didn't expect him to keep and I wondered how he'd hold up - he did by using all his eclecticism and creativity. I run from Ceramic Dog as far as I can and I've not really been convinced by some of the film music work he's releaseed on Tzadik. Sometimes I think of him as creative and ranging across genre and boundaries in an inventive way but others I just wonder whether he spreads himself too thin. But that's more about me than him. As Allen says above whatever he does is recognisable as him nad often its the context reather than his playing that I don't find convincing. I think my musical life would be poorer but not empty without his playing and recording
  4. Johansson was a star at Oto too. I was also as impressed with Wickihalder's alto as you were. The Parker/Lytton/Guy trio burned bright in London as well Interesting to see the mix of solos, trios, quartets being similar but with different personnel If I could write about music as clearly as you Ubu i'd post my review but I'll leave it to you.... Absolutely meant the collective 'we' no individual target, at all. It was just a throwaway that reflected a thought that we'll probably never know what actually transpired in detail. I'm now guilty of refocussing the thread again....oops....(and if my emoticons hadn't mysteriously been disabled apparently by dling Firefiox there'd be a big smiley here now)
  5. Can't imagine Oto folks ever playing hardball. they don't need to and they have always been the most amenable in communications I've had with them. Sounds like Trevor Watts just decided to make his stand - fair enough but it does seem to say 'prima donna' a little bit I'm not sure Guy should have to step in - he's probably spent weeks organising the residency and then one of many internationally renowned musicians makes a stand, why should he spend extra effort massaging an ego? sadly the proof was in the music on the night - Trevor Watts wasn't missed one iota. His decision to pull out, I hope the face he feels he's saved was worth it. The Barry Guy New Orchestra proved they're were bigger than one musician - that's not a criticism of Watts' stance just the truth as I heard it Are we making too much ofthis? Just wondering.....
  6. Baritone is Per Texas Johannsonn. Or it was in London enjoy!
  7. I'm still intrigued to know the source of the Watts 'alleged'hissy fit. As I'd a ticket I'd not looked at the Oto website in days so hadn't seen any announcement but was told by a fellow audience member he was unavailable, no reason was circulating on the night that I heard. I can imagine there's many different reasons why Gustaffson wasn't available - hell, he travels so much I'm surprised he's the energy to fulfil half the commitments he does. I'm not worrying about Tarfala yet, Steve
  8. Really, I didn't see that. Where's the source? Guess we won't be seeing Mr Watts in any band soon at Oto, then. Shame
  9. Trevor Watts does get to the States occasionally. I've seen him twice in Baltimore, IIRC, in the last 3 or 4 years, once with Veryan Weston. Watts was unable to play last night and I think for the whole three days. I don't know a reason
  10. and now, keeping it big and British SME - Live Big Band and Quartet [Vinyl]
  11. Yes. I was at yesterday's. solos, duos, trios, quartets and then the Orchestra playing an Evan P piece. Wish I could be there now for the two orchestra pieces from the recent CD but circumstances dictate otherwise
  12. London Jazz Composers' Orchestra - Stringer [FMP] compositions by Barry Guy seems just right after a tremendous evening listening to his New Orchestra yesterday
  13. The Trio were red hot live last year (with one vocal tune - ouch). Can't imagine the CD can be anything less than impressive if they caught them right
  14. Thanks for posting. A name I've been vaguely aware of but having listened to the sample i'd like to know more about

    Anthony Braxton

I'm not sure that is what the folks want...well at least not this one. I'm a big AB fan and like to try and keep abreast of the developments in his music but I simply don't have the resources to purchase big sets on even a semi-regular basis. I do get frustrated by releases like this as I wonder who they really serve in the end. Obviously AB has every right to document his music in the way that he wishes and to release it in whichever format but I wonder how many of his 'friendly experiencers' miss out because of his choices. Further up thread there's discussion of how the shift to annual membership of Tricentric lost the foundation some subcribers because of the financial impact of the change. If any part of the process of releasing material is to enable it to be heard by the widest audince (maybe that's not a consideration) then someone needs to take a look at how it's currently done. Yes, this is a bit of a rant - a rant born of the frustration of not hearning what I'd like to - entirely selfish and as a fan I have no right to dicate but I can moan!

Thanks for posting the link. the music sounds fascinating but no way that budget or life will allow for 12Cds. I wish they'd produce a 2 CD sampler or similar
  17. thanks, I'll take a look
  18. Another interesting review Leeway, thanks. I only know Cole by name and have not listened to him. This piques my interest, can you recommend a recording or two? Tubas? love them and those Rivers' LPs. I'll hear Per Åke Holmlander on wednesday with Barry Guy
  19. bassist Aakaash Israni, pianist Amino Belyamani and drummer Qasim Naqvi. From SF now brooklyn, I believe. their first album was a very good improv session. this new direction is fascinating. Certainly brought in a young 20s/30s (I felt decidedly 'fatherly') crowd and sold out two shows at Oto which doesn't happen so often http://www.dawnofmidi.com/
  20. Last night - Dawn of Midi palying Dysnomia at Cafe Oto. Astonishing how an acoustic trio of piano, bass and drums can sound like an electronic 'dance' project with nods to Reich, Autechre and others. Mesmerising stuff
  21. Thanks Leeway, nice review. I've one of the Swedish Azz LPs, Azz Appeal still sealed - I must break it open and listen. Mats is a fairly regualr visitor to London (Cafe Oto almost exclusively) but hasn't brought this band over yet, sadly. his Fire! Orchestra is slated to play here in September - a must, I think.
  22. I hope you found it of interest. At least is indicates what was in Marion's mind at time of recording. I did indeed. The Brown connection made perfect sense. It was a stimulating and in parts somewhat challenging read but time well spent. I can imagine I'll revisit it Wasn't Andrew Hill's "Dusk" based on "Cane" also? According to the liner notes to the CD, the title tune was inspired by "Cane." Nice catch Matthew. Need to give that disk a spin, it's been a while. I feel a potential new thread coming on - music inspired by literature Thanks Matthew and so do I need to listen to Dusk again now.
  23. Looks like you get to sit in comfy armchairs - nice. Nothing as plush over here .....dangerous after a heavy day at work though zzzzzzz
  24. Thanks to the thread I listened to the album on Spotify. Really enjoyed it. Seemed qute sparky for Kenny on Cam
  25. I hope you found it of interest. At least is indicates what was in Marion's mind at time of recording. I did indeed. The Brown connection made perfect sense. It was a stimulating and in parts somewhat challenging read but time well spent. I can imagine I'll revisit it
