  1. Waterstones (Charing Cross Road, right?) is gone too? I don't ever remember a Waterstones in Charing X Road unless it was many years ago and replaced by Blackwells nearly opposite Foyles. Waterstones still about generally but went through a "restructuring" a few years back hat closed several stores. Inside info suggests not all currently open stores will remain so, expecially in towns/cities with two stores.
  2. Good luck to them. I have a very good independent bookshop in my area set up by two ex-Waterstones' employees who were made redundant when the local branch was closed. We get a nicer bookshop, they get a lot more satisfaction running their own business - nice outcome
  3. loved this, thanks "there are no academies on the other side of the tracks"
  4. Stuart Broad been known to cook I hear. If he doesn't do so thoroughly Prior to them Finnishing they'll all have the Trotts. sorry - off to get a life, now
  5. You taunt and abuse dangerous animals, you die. One day I hope it will end probably not on animal welfare ground but hey
  6. Am I the only person that finds the "etc" in the title intriguing/redundant/lazy? They couldn't think of other otherworldly entities? or they didn't have space on the sleeve?
  7. and before Bell peppers the boundary?
  8. Great match. What irony that the last decision was a DRS. Australia have certainly overturned a few preconceptions with this performance. I'm still not sure that their top five is strong enough to post the bigger totals but I'm happy to be proved wrong. Changes in both teams expected by thursday. Finn surely to be dropped by England - I hope they give Onions a chance.
  9. advantage England towards end of the day. 250+ lead looking useful. I'd be a lot happier if they can extend that to 300+. Swann on a hard, deteriorating pitch.... Broad walks like an Aussie!
  10. More and more often, I find myself telling the radio to fuck off when he starts harping. It's the constant reference to a long-dead world of cricket comprising himself, Closey, Illy, Sharpey, Binksy, Fred, Jackie, uncovered pitches and for fuck's sake, shut up man. From which i can only assume you're not in a "a corridor of uncertainty" about this?
  11. Today is why Test cricket is such a great day. Agar's innings was marvellous. All over to KP tomorrow I don't mind McGrath either, a bit bland but may grow into it. I still enjoy Boyc's "stick of rhubarb" wielded by his mother. He hasn't quite reached the self-parody role that dear old Fred truman became
  12. An entertaining first day for sure. I've not seen any highlights yet so haven't seen the England dismissals but I gather Trott and Prior could have done somewhat better. The Aussie batting line-up looks very unbalanced with four openers in the top six. I wonder whether the Australian collapse puts England's batting performance into a clearer perspective - maybe the overhead conditions were more contributory to their low total than first seemed. Anyway, looking forward to England getting 100 lead and piling on some runs in the sunshine this afternoon.
  13. Great to see a cricket thread. Listened for the first two hours - two sides testing eachother in the early exchanges. Will Aussie's young bowling attack fulfil undoubted promise? England will regret losing the two wickets and with Peitersen now in it could be three down very quickly as he's such a poor starter. Geoff Boycott now on commentary so it really is a test match!
  14. Phillip Wilson - Esoteric [Hat Art] ....got rained on with his own thirty-eight. Oh yes, love that album, love them all I've very few TW but this might be the best I've heard so far ( only 3!!!!) I'd suggest Blue Valentine next if it's not been one of the three
  15. ....got rained on with his own thirty-eight. Oh yes, love that album, love them all
  16. Great (and useful) list Clifford. I second the Moers suggestion, some fine stuff indeed. I'd also add Circle (Cologne) for Philip Wilson, Sam Rivers, David Murray, James Newton ....... There's also a surprising and sometimes interesting selection of ECMs that never made it to CD (except in some cases very expensive Japanese releases) - Paul Bley's Ballads is a particular favourite. Tom Van Der Geld, Holland/Bailey, Rivers' Contrasts and others. And mention of ECM reminds me of the Japo releases that haven't seen a CD life
  17. Discogs can be a useful resource to check vinyl v. CD releases. Not always accurate but a guide. As for distances, I have a friend who shops in New York (ncluding DMG) but lives outside London, UK - far enough?
  18. He was the first live Jazz I saw in London. The Swan at Stockwell, early 80s. Loved it
  19. Joseph Jarman & Famoudou Don Moye - Egwu Anwu (sun Song) [india Navigation] recent acquisition, very pleased and yes, Colinmce, the John Carter is very nice on that Golia (I just wish a previous owner hadn't scratched one of the tracks - why oh why?)
  20. Careful Alex, don't step on those LPs (sound of vinyl hounds weeping in despair)! Interesting article - good to hear of the imminent (?) Babel releases
  21. Blowing in from Chicago ?
  22. Thanks guys. I'll look for that Tower set, Clifford.
  23. Just wondering whether anyone's familiar with this band? Online sources intrigue with mentions of "plenty of space for tonally free passages, rhythmic interplay using percussion and noise instruments," and "humoristic interludes and siren calls from Asian cultures". which let's face it could sound marvellous or a helluva mess. discogs lists a handful of releases Any thoughts/guidance/clues from those who have listened to them much appreciated?
  24. Nice price, i paid more than that from the man himself. I'm sure you'll feel it was worth the wait
  25. Vinny Golia - Spirits in Fellowship [Nine Winds]
