  1. thanks for posting this good news - made my day
  2. and mine looks like this. BYG would love it on CD not least as my vinyl was so badly pressed off centre (BYG trait?) it was unplayable (seller did refund). Would love to hear what it really sounds like edit: to change ridiculously large image
  3. I'll be dodging the paving stones as I listen to Mr Shipton who I find a considerably more listenable presenter than the last incumbent - finally I'll be able to enjoy the programme and not cringe at that "hell...lo"
  4. Jackie Mac - flat, sharp or fabulous? Discuss
  5. prolific indeed. I'll second the Mujician recommendation without hesitation - fantastic band. Then a lot will depend on what configurations you enjoy/dislike. PD can be heard probably in any combination from solo to big band and on most recordings will feature tenor and soprano Some of my favourites: Rylickolum [CIMP] w. Paul Rogers (you'll come across this fabulous bassist alot in the PD discography) and Kevin Norton Deep Whole [FMR - release a lot and varied sessions from PD, more available than the Duns] w paul Rogers and Mark Sanders Mumuksuta [Duns] - a sextet, 'spontaneous compositions' that are somewhat less high energy, utilising some very telling voicings across guitar, bass, flute, piano drums and saxes Bebop Stardust [Cuneiform] - Octet. great composition by PD. swings like hell Profound Sound trio [Porter] w Cyrille and Henry Grimes. yes, it sounds as good as it should. Live reording makes up in energy for any lack of clarity many more. Look out for duos/trios with guitarist Phillips Gibbs or pianist Evelyn Chang and if you have the chance, do see him live he's a force of nature but with a very unassuming manner, friendly and approachable. I'm rather partial to his pipes playing but can understand why others might shy away
  6. I always find Sclavis interesting, but I'm unfamiliar with the other musicians. http://www.inclinais...clavis-2&id=161 I think I've seen him play 5 times: NYC w/ Texier & Romano (Alliance Francaise), NYC 2 nights back to back quintet w/ Matinier on accordeon (Dans La Nuit with film at Alliance Francaise, and music from Affrontement des Pretendants at Tonic), Quartet w/ Dave Douglas (North Sea), and maybe best of all, a quartet with Michel Portal, Henri Texier and Daniel Humair at Montreal Jazz Festival. Another Sclavis fan here who's enjoyed many of those line ups live too, except the last one which sounds great indeed. Not been disappointed yet by his ECM output.
  7. Anybody have a source for this? it was certainly available from local London store on Record Store Day
  8. singing drummers always make me think "how'd you do that?" but Levon Helm just made me think "that's the only way to do it". What a voice, what a drummer. RIP
  9. "I shall be released" The Band from Music from Big Pink. Hadn't listened to the album for nigh on twenty years and was inspired to by the sad thread about Levon Helm. Could've chosen many of the tracks but the vocal performance on this track really resonated
  10. And its predecessor Dirt Farmer. The one time I saw him live, not so long ago, he was having voice problems and couldn't sing, but his playing was superb. It was a taping of Elvis Costello's Spectacle at the Apollo, and how's this for a guest list: Levon, Allen Toussaint, Richard Thompson & Nick Lowe, plus Ray La Montaigne. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=uyXOjiVhH5U BRILLIANT! Thank you so much for finding this. Oh, that is special...when Toussaint comes in on the vocal, well. And the way you just know Helm's just singing it aloud in his head.
  11. Very excited at the prospect of finally hearing 'giant awakened' in pristine form. A must buy The Carter/Bradford LPs still doing it for me so they'll be a "maybe" purchase I'm also interested in the news that Ace have picked up Flying Dutchman....could be interesting
  12. I've owned the LP in the past. I've visited Mapledurham scores of times, even at that time I was listening to the album, as it was close to where I grew up. Until this post I had no idea. Extraordinary what you learn from the O board
  13. Otic records. Bobby (or Robert then) Naughton ao
  14. Bogdan, welcome aboard guess it depends on how completist you are and whether you want to chase all/some of the missing LPs down. I was in a similar situation to you when the Mosaic was issued. The Mosaic hype/excitement sent me off to buy a few more of the LPs and I've been more than happy even without all of them - just means I've others to look forward to purchasing when the urge strikes. it you're vinyl orientated anyway, it's a lot to pay for the booklet
  15. sample on Cuneiform site now. Sounds marvellous, just how I'd imagined WLS would marshall such resources - with precision, lightness and great soul. Here's hoping it's representative of the whole Amazon.com gives 5/22 release date with pre=order at $24 which for a four disc set has got to be worth it
  16. Double Image - Dawn [ECM]. some lovely vibes and marimba on this one
  17. I'm enjoying the music. I'll be there for the London UK gig
  18. I saw this group at the Vancouver Jazz Fest last year. I remember not caring much for it, but I can't recall exactly why. Probably something like the drummer dominating the set. I can readily imagine how Sorey's drumming may sound like a dominating force in this trio (he's a force with the lehman Octet live). I'd love to have the chance to hear them live and decide myself though. Hijack alert - I'm with everone else on Laubrock. Very interesting player. Glad for her she relocated to NYC as she seems to making the most of many opportunities - shame for London though!
  19. I agree about the Kikuchi and Lehman. Both strong and vital releases in very different ways - one quite in your face (Lehman, love the production too) the other a quiet storm. Listened to Mehldau on Spotify and either i've heard too many of his and I'm sated or it's all beginning to sound a little formulaic. I'd not enjoyed the trio as much since Ballard's arrival, just doesn't seem to have the flexibility that Rossy brought to the beat. Shame as I had high hopes for it. Piernanunzi, i'd stopped buying only as I'd a fair number but he's certainly an interesting player. Similarly with EST - asking myself, do I need another recording by them, although the previous posthumous relaese from the same sessions was a very stimulating listen

    Tony Marsh RIP

Very sad news indeed. I saw him only last month with Evan Parker at the Vortex and he played beautifully. In fact the three of us there all felt his playing the highlight of the evening. I purchased his fairly recent Psi release 'quartet improvisations' that night and I'd recommend it to anyone one with an open musical mind. We've now lost two great drumming Tony's - Levin and Marsh
  21. Paradoxical Frog, which I picked up more for Laubrock and Sorey is a very interesting recording, I feel. Davis impresses, especially with her use of space but I've not tried any of her others but will do one day
  22. Can't wait for this one
  23. disc 2. Reflectativity. WLS w. Wes Brown and Anthony Davis
  24. saddest refund I've collected was for Alice Coltrane's gig in London, scheduled for April 2007 IIRC
