  1. That was an impressive win by England, WI are a strong team. Reading about USA v RSA, it seems it was a bit too close for RSA comfort.
  2. Nduduzo Makhathini - Unomkhubulwane [Blue Note] Very strong
  3. Saw him way back when, don't remember a lot about it though
  4. I have just bought a copy of that due to the same discussion
  5. Company - 1 [Incus, UK 1977]
  6. Thank you. That makes sense as the only results I got for them on Discogs were from early dates. Odd that they are added on the version I listened to but that's streaming services for you.
  7. At risk of slightly derailing this, I'm now streaming an 'Expanded' version of this album on Tidal and loving it, my first time hearing this music (yes, I know). It includes 6 extra tracks including a vocal 'Strange Feeling', 'Coloratura' and 'Cop Out' but I'm having trouble finding a physical release on discogs that includes the extra tunes. I'm assuming they're from the same sessions? Anyone know of a physical release that includes them? I'm a complete Ellington neophyte so forgive me if I'm missing something obvious
  8. Yes, wouldn't argue with Clifford's suggestions. 'Oliv' and 'Karyobin' are both extraordinary, and the former is a great introduction to Stevens' use of female vocals, also featured to great effect on 'Birds Of A Feather' and '1.2.Albert Atler' 'Biosystem' is towards the end of Steven's SME journey and as such is absolutely indicative of his approach to music but you may be better immersing yourself in his world elsewhere first, rather depends on how you feel about strings-only (with a hint of cornet) based free improvisation.
  9. Phew, I was a bit concerned...
  10. Yes, that's an interesting point and not one I disagree with. As library budgets have become tighter and tighter, here in the UK, the skill is to ensure that it's not just the evidently popular that is represented. I left libraries too But if that interest was indeed in the past and readers have moved away from that author then not adding more seems reasonable, it may be that the volumes currently on the shelves are next in line for withdrawal because of inactivity. I don't know the author or series referenced so I'm speaking hypothetically. It's a truism that if local public libraries stocked everything that everyone in the community thought they should they'd need to be the biggest buildings in the area by several fold. Presenting a well stocked library is an exercise in compromise to some degree and also one of representation and opportunity as outlined by @AllenLoweabove.
  11. Spontaneous Music Ensemble - Biosystem [Incus, UK 1977] Today's arrival. Fascinating, will take some absorbing.
  12. That's a lot of I.U.C.C. in one sitting
  13. My point is that the fact those books by that author are on the shelf doesn't necessarily mean their issue figures reflect the need for the ones you are donating. Without looking at their issue history, the age of the books and how the balance of stock in that particular genre is you can't really make an accurate assessment of their "value" to the library. In fact, the fact they're on the shelf and not on loan may indicate that they don't in fact reflect the clientele's tastes as much as you believe or wish. My experience was always that many people kind enough to offer donations did so believing that they should automatically be placed in stock based on no other criterion than the generosity of the giving. However some donors would allow the librarians to exercise their professional expertise in deciding what represented a balanced selection for the community they worked with.
  14. Would you let someone come along from outside your profession and tell you how to do your job? Librarianship is a profession for many reasons, one of which is that it's more than "filling holes in author's bibliographies" at a member of the public's behest, no matter how generous that person may be.
  15. My collection's catalogued using Excel. I have a colour coding to indicate the more expensive items. My partner knows this but I suspect when the time comes she'll look to offload it as one collection. It's going to be an inconvenience for her so I'm more than happy for her to do with it whatsoever she chooses. I have friends that will advise her if she wishes and a trusted shop that she knows about. I'm more than happy for it all to be donated to Oxfam - that's where I purchased the most expensive item in the collection from. I have had fun from it all, let others enjoy and look after them.
  16. "let's drop a few and keep the Poms guessing lads" And hopefully the first part of a good 48 hours for England. Hopefully a little more convincingly so this evening
  17. Thanks, I have been living under that misunderstanding for years now
  18. inspired to play this John Carter Quintet - Variations [Moers, Germany 1979] Correction, I do have that one, too many LPs obviously...
  19. That's the only one of the series I don't have, can't think why
