  2. to hear an interview with one of the great masters anotated with live musical footnotes shows much preparation and is a musical delight.

  5. It's superb. There's little question it will make it to my "Best of 2007" list. In the past I've found some of Ehrlich's playing to be a bit dry, not terribly emotional. This one is changing my mind. Thanks Bill. This CD is already doing his way to my POB. i just love it. my kind of stuff.
  6. their coach was in some kind of trouble the last couple days. what was it? He was selling a secret newsletter that nobody else knew about, for $1200 per year. The recipients were sworn to secrecy, and he shared info on the players who were injured (which he doesn't make public), and also gave his personal opinion about his own players - i.e. this one's slow, that one can't catch the ball very well, etc. Add that to the fact that he simply hasn't done a very good job in the time he's been at A&M, and there are alot of alumni (like myself) who want him gone. The sooner the better. sounds like a class act. where did the aggies dig him up. bring back the longtime coach with the initials for a first name!!!!

  8. Clem, I agree that a lot of the stuff that he did for his own label and then Concord, was rather repetitious and let's say it, boring. I was NOT a lover of the Quintets he had at that time. I do not own the Mosaic set for that reason. But the much of the stuff he did for the Italian Philology label (named after him.. Geez!) is very intense although sometimes uneven, seemingly hastily put together. I would recommend particularly the 2-CD duo set he did with Gordon Beck, "The Complete Wigmore Hall Concert" on the French JMS Label; also, of course, "Musique De Bois" on Muse (with Byard, Richard Davis, Alan Dawson) is one of the best alto quartet bop albums ever recorded IMHO! I also heartily recommend "Here's To My Lady" with Flanagan, Mraz and Kenny Washington on the Chesky label, and "Ornithology" a quartet session on Philology with Franco D'Andrea (p), Attilio Zanchi (b), and Gianni Cazzola (d). Hmmmmmmmm.. now THAT should open your ears a little bit to what Woods is capable of now that he is out of the clutches of Concord! As I said previously, his delightful (nothing dramatic) album of Quincy Jones music is a current "mellow mood" favorite of mine ... I should also add that he has been recently trouring with Bud Shank to great acclaim from those who have heard this two-alto dynamo. They have cut a record and is should be available in the coming monhs.. I can't wait to hear that ... two 70 year old alto players piercing the ether! woods did a beautiful duo album that i really like, "flowers for hodges," with jim mcneely. this makes 3 concords i own, by denny zeitlin, hodges, and marian mcpartland. not a particular fan of that label. this shank resurgence surprises me. in the 60's, shank, chet baker, oliver nelson, and joe pas were spitting out mostly forgettable poppish albums by the dozen on pacific jazz. my favorite shank album was a beautiful beautiful pacific jazz album with kimio eto, called koto and flute.
  9. after watching kentucky beat lsu in several overtimes i concur, aloc.
  10. several months ago, several writers, considering the state of the illini facilities, couldnt imagine how they managed to get such an awesome recruiting class. .......scandal just over the horizon? http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/stor...&id=3051881 You never know, but Coach Ron Zook has always been known as an exceptional recruiter; he brought a whole bunch of talent to Florida, but got fired due to win-loss record (his coaching has been regarded as less exceptional ). [Added: The past couple of years, it's become apparent that Big Ten football is rather over-rated. Perhaps Zook doesn't have to resort to recruiting chicanery to win in that league. ] If the Illini keep winning, he'll get plenty of money for better facilities... what happened today?
  11. plus public tv ran welk reruns in prime time saturday nights for 25 or 30 years, and may still be. that means he brought in big bucks. he had some fine musicians. i remember trumpeter george thow, pete fountain, violinist dick kessner and several others. it must have been a bit hard on musicians to trade the conservative music for a fat steady paycheck that lasted for decades. he fired one of his stars, champagne lady alice lon, for showing a little too much knee on his saturday night abc dodge show. "alice is a lovely girl," welk said, "but she just wants to be too sexy."

  18. which trumpeter does a version of the howdy dowdy theme? bowie?
  19. I dig! to find a fine new brew or wine or kentucky bourbon is to find a new friend. thanks.
  20. i generally find their rankings reasonably close to my american tastes, although i regard natty ice as one of the finest brews in the world. i think the molson canadian brewed version of guinness extra stout is a bit over rated.
  21. some of smith's stuff isnt too swift, like that organic junk, but their top 7 or 8 are awesome. oatmeal and imperial stouts and taddy are really nice. so far, i am not a fan of the goose island brews.
