I hope Young has co-workers in this project, because his statements on MP3:s (see earlier thread here) reveals a lack of understanding of the technology behind compressed audio. For a majority of people MP3:s above a certain bitrate cannot be distinguished from the uncompressed original. Those interested can visit hydrogenaudio.org and read up on listening tests. I consider myself concerned with audio quality and I've done blind tests (there's software that enables you to do so called "ABX" tests on your own) that have revealed the bitrate where I can't tell the difference anymore. I enjoy my LP collection, I still listen to CD:s when I'm in my living room, but MP3:s are a very convenient way of bringing the music with me in the car, on my mobile phone, when on vacation etc. Surely they sound better than the majority of compact cassetes everybody were happy with for a couple of decades. That said, I'll welcome the possibility of downloading high-resolution digital files, but it is an incorrect assumption that those listening to MP3s do not care about sound quality at all. Many do, and many MP3:s do sound quite OK.

Ubu, "still asleep" is an incorrect translation. It should read "he fell into sleep" which is an expression meaning that he passed away.

Happy birthday, MG! I hope you're enjoying one of your Applause BN pressings on this special day! :-)
-
Happy birthday, Marcus! I hope you are fine!
-
Steve Kuhn Live in New York (Cobblestone)
-
Hans Koller & The Big Band 'New York City' (MPS, Dutch pressing).
-
The Bob Brookmeyer Orchestra 'Gloomy Sunday and Other Bright Moments' (Verve)
-
Actually, it's not too bad!
-
Yes. It's probably the only BN sleeve which was IMPROVED when Applause issued it I got my copy cheap (4 EUR) because someone has painted the cover all blue and then just written "Jimmy Smith, Plain Talk' with a white crayon!
-
Neither could I, so I put up a photo of my copy. Feel free to use the link! Now playing: Jimmy Smith 'Plain Talk' (Liberty pressing). McLean's appearance makes the whole album for me.
-
Wayne Shorter 'Odyssey of Iska' (Liberty UA Inc. black label).
-
Martial Solal 'Jazz Jamboree '67' (Muza)
-
Huh - didn't know of this J.C. Moses appearance. Interesting. He plays fine in this setting, although it is perhaps more conservative than some of his other appearances. I find Sample more enjoyable here than with the Jazz Crusaders; he gets opportunity to stretch out a bit. Sound clip available here: http://www.recordmania.net/index.php?PHPSESSID=f4b7f0b55c1010629e7eb4923c71a818&query=joe+sample&ref=search_records This is also available as a cheap CD reissue under the title 'Fancy Dance'.

I suppose you've got the same cover as I have: Never seen a 'Jazz Workshop London' pressing of any other title. This has very heavy vinyl, but not too good sound. His worst beard must have been on 'Great White Hope', though:

Re: Blue Mitchell - I noted that also 'Step Lightly' was excluded from the LT series reissues.
-
Any word on the Moacir Santos albums?
-
Kirk Lightsey Trio with Chet Baker 'Everything Happens to Me' (Timeless). Has Eddie Gladden on drums.
-
Clare Fischer 'Jazz Song' (Revelation). One of several very enjoyable albums Clare recorded for Revelation Records in the early 70s.
-
Joe Sample 'Try Us' (Sonet, 1969) with J.C. Moses and Red Mitchell.

After the LT series, now we have the BNLA series; 50 reissues coming up in November 2012-January 2013 covering the last period of the "old" Blue Note. The price is 999 Yen (~10 EUR/13 USD/8 GBP). I'm no expert, but it would appear that some of these have not been reissued on CD before, or in any case they are not widely available anyway. I've now listened to the disk, and while the remastering and reissue production is fine, I must say that I probably enjoy the '$1.000.000 collection' more. I don't know if a better familiarity with Charles Dickens' works might have helped, but while the Dickens suite held together nicely as a whole nothing really stood out as particularly moving or memorable in my opinion. I'll give a few more spins to see if I manage to get into it better. I found the later 'Off Duty' album a bit lightweight and closer to easy instrumental music than jazz. I hope I will not have offended our British jazzophiles on the forum with these remarks.

Funny, I've got loads and they don't sound any different to me from other Fantasy stuff. I have one or two that I've also got on other editions... I believe it were the ZYX 20 bit remasters of OJC material in digipaks that could sound very bad. The standard jewel case editions were the same as the US OJC:s, which are mostly quite decent.
