  1. Perhaps not, but he is "something special" on the title track of the Groove Holmes album.
  2. For what it's worth, the use of "Papa" may not have been common until somewhat later. I got curious and used a Google application to look at the relative frequency of the appearance of "Papa Joe Jones" and "Jo Jones" in books that they've scanned. There's a noticeable peak in the relative frequency of the "Papa" form around 1992.
  3. Apparently it goes back long before the 1980s. I've found a reference to him as "Papa" as early as December 1960. See the December 1960 issue of HiFi/Stereo Review. It has a review of his album "Vamp 'Til Ready" (Everest PBPR 5099) by "R.J.G" (presumably Ralph J. Gleason). It's on page 90 here (may take a long time to load): http://vintagevacuumaudio.com/vintage-magazines/hifi/1960-12-hifi-stereo-review.pdf
  4. I've heard this claim. Here's a link to the NY Times obit: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/27/arts/music/herb-jeffries-singing-star-of-black-cowboy-films-dies-at-100.html?hpw&rref=obituaries
  5. Yes, that's Marshall Royal. Meeker says the pianist is Dick Hazard.
  6. Some pictures of the Eureka Brass Band available here: http://louisdl.louislibraries.org/cdm/search/collection/p16313coll33/searchterm/%20Roddy,%20Ruben,%201906-1960/field/subjec/mode/all/conn/and/order/nosort
  7. The Walter Page sides are on Frog 31 ("What Kind of Rhythm Is That?" - Territory Bands).
  8. Glad you're back Jeff! I'll see if I can find anything on him.
  9. What a sound he had!
  10. There are some air checks from 1944. One is on one of the early CDs in the Storyville CDs. Barksdale didn't record with Tatum until about 1951.
  11. Lee Konitz Quartet at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass. with Dan Tepfer (p), Jeremy Stratton (b), George Schuller (d). Memorable evening. As best as I can tell, here's what was played: What Is This Thing Called Love? Stella By Starlight My Heart Belongs to Daddy Body and Soul All the Things You Are Just Friends Alone Together (partial) 317 East 32nd Street Skylark (duo with Tepfer)
  12. His Cello Quartet recordings are very distinctive and worth checking out.
  13. Thanks for the update Chuck. Some of us are obviously tantalized by the prospect of more music from the 60s by Russell. However, given the nature of the group, I can believe that there might be a certain sameness with alternate takes. In any case, any details that become available would be appreciated.
  14. My favorite version is probably by ike Quebec. Lots of robins out in the last week or so up here in Massachusetts. It's been a long, cold winter.
  15. 16. Many thanks for the birthday wishes! It's been a good one. Love the cats!
  17. Old, but very welcome, news nonetheless! Moderator: ignore the inadvertent report. Hit the wrong button!
  18. Chuck, Do you have any additional information you can pass along about this? Bob Hilbert's discography shows one unissued tune ("Goose Pimples") from that Impulse session with no information about any alternates. There's the Columbia material and also the material that came out on the MB (presumably for "Marshall Brown") demo. Hilbert shows lots of unissued material from that session, but I don't imagine the Universal would have access to the Columbia material or to the Marshall Brown material. Was the abandoned "Ask Me Now" just the small group, or was it going to be the three Impulse albums, perhaps with some unissued material from those sessions?
  19. Ghost, The original complete issue of the Treasury series broadcasts (to distinguish them from the incomplete issues on Fairmont) were on a series of 46 LPs that Jerry Valburn issued on his DETS label. There were also a couple of bonus LPs and a bonus EP that included material that post-dated the Treasury series broadcasts.
  20. I didn't count the number of solos by Galbraith, but I do remember thinking that there were more solos by him than you typically get.
  21. I just picked up a used copy of this. It consists of material drawn from three different Epic LPs. As best as I can tell, it has: all of Epic LN3271 (The Rhythm Section) a portion of LN3339 (After Hours Jazz) a portion of LN3297 (Rhythm Plus One) The tunes with Jimmy Cleveland were originally on Rhythm Plus One (Wolf Talk, Sahara, and Blues) and on After Hours Jazz (Jimmy's Tune).
  22. Wow! Thanks for posting this. Just made my day!
