Sorry Ubu, should have contacted you the moment I received the disk. I wanted to listen first and have done in the meantime but had too much on my head to write something down on it. It was a rather enjoyable listen FWIW.

I use MSWord. For a sample click here (350 Kb) Insert your jpg cover image using [insert]->[image]->[select file] (or something close to that, my computer talks German to me) and adjust the size (double click the image->size & frame->12cm x 12cm [or equivalent in inches]), then adjest the layout (double click the image->layout->fit square). You can now move the picture using drag/drop and fit it on the correct place (you can delete the pics I have in the file, there will still be a frame left to fit the new pic over). The personnel listing uses small caps. The titles are listed in a table. Contact me if you have problems.

thanks RDK, anyone know what's up with these bonus tracks on the Varese Sarabande issue?
-
I looked up that AEC disk (hey, one I got right without ever hearing it!) and it seems available only from Charly and from Sunspots. Now I have read several bad opinions on both of those: they seem vinyl dubs and don't sound too good at that. I also came across a listing of the album on the Varese Sarabande label that has a couple of bonus tracks. In short: what's the best currently available source for this music?

hell, I just got married (talk about getting in line...), there must be a whole world waiting for me out there. Anyhow, I'll just repeat, for me it's in the sound of the (hollywood) strings moreso than anywhere else. Just an observation to help the world better understand itself.
-
appreciate your opinion, was just fishing for something more on the strings thing (as others were it seems). I mean, it's some sort of a common opinion that strings sorta suck. So why is that and why do you think they don't (necessarily). Maybe fodder for an own thread. (what line? that brightly coloured one that goes all wobbly?)

Jim, you're being a bit cryptic/over the top/whatever here (appropriate english fails me, I've had some great bock beers and they hit in the right place). What should I do? respond to the music you say. How do I do that? By listening and digging into myself what the music does for and with me. You cannot deny (actually you seem to underline it in your post, but that part about extramarital relationships went quite a bit beyond me) that part of the sensation music gives is in memories. Music is like smell in that respect, only better (most of the times). I do not have a musical training that can make me more sensitive to the techical shite as opposed to the mental associations. None of my mental associations are with other music on a technical level. So I respond to the music by responding to the associations. Besides direct emotions, there's nothing much else, is there? And I am too damn lazy and too damn critical to try and put off the association part of my brain and go for pure emotions only. Times have changed in that respect I guess . Anyhow, I guess I'm slowly getting old as well. As I wrote in my initial and follow up comments, I am listening to this stuff and I am getting someting out of it. I guess I don't know yet what it is. Good music probably...

maybe I'll drop by. Probably not, but maybe.

yup. but it's there.... Hat titles seem to become expensive real fast.

See, you're talking about "re-harmonising," "variety in texture," "inner voices," "counterpoint," and whatnot. As I commented above, for those uneducated in music or music theory this is difficult stuff to follow on that level. I can imagine having a deep respect for this music without wanting to listen to it for fun. Or even that the technical aspects make it fun. This technical part is lacking for me and it gets more difficult to step over the muzak-ness in the damn sound of the things.

yeah right! I saw you on the Babe thread and the Same one just now....

wrt the Reese Europe track: I had read a whole lot about this guy. He's important huh? I wonder how much of that popularity stems from propaganda. I'd never consciously listened to any of his music and although his name popped up in my head when I heard track 1-11, I would have expected something more like true marching music to tag the name to the music. Guess I was wrong & that's cool.

Well, I certainly do not hear them all the same, but there is a definitive quality to string arrangements that make a lot of people go all yucky. I suspect it's in the voicings and in their use as music for syrupy scenes in syrupy movies. Anyhow, I don't know if writing CAN be syrupy or only the execution. Then syrupy-ness becomes a matter of taste rather than any objective quality. As I wrote in my comment, I have learned to appreciate stuff like this. I distinguish between good and bad and that's a whole lot I guess. Still most if not all strings put me off to some extent. It must be because for lack of education I cannot appreciate the writing per sé and can only judge the execution as heard. And then all kinds of nasty association pop into my head. I don't know what I'm trying to say exactly so you'll have to do with the above.

like Claude, I was just getting into his music. Great player. Sad loss. ---- Check out this CD on Jazz Realities, titled Musician of the Year. It collects a lot of ancient 10" LPs. Samples can be found here
