hello all, in the liner notes of the first volume of the ten volume set "earl bud powell" on "mythic sound" cd-ms 6001-2 (long out of print), francis paudras mentioned recordings by bud powell made between 1934 and 1939 (!) recorded by his father on a self-made recording machine worked with reels of magnetic steel wire. francis paudras writes: "i had the great privileg of hearing the first of bud´s recodings. he played bach, chopin, debussy, but also in a different register, ""tea for two"", ""how high the moon"", ""honeysuckle rose""..." ..."the privileg of hearing these recordings made between 1934 and 1939 permits me to smile......" ("how high the moon" was, i think, from the beginning of the 40´s, so this recordings are maybe dated a little bit later.) i found nothing in the bud powell discography by claude schlouch or on the web. does anybody knows about this??? are they in circulation to collectors? who can bring a little light on this story? or is this another "buddy bolden cylinder" story? mr. claude schlouch (also on this forum) maybe?? thanks in advance keep boppin´ marcel

hello all, does somebody know who the singer on the tiltle "since we said goodbye" (track 8) is? he is in the billy eckstine/earl coleman style. maybe it is earl coleman? and there is a lot of flute featured in the tracks. could it be buddy colette? he was often featured with gerald wilson´s recordings from the 60´s. i don´t think that the date of the live stereo tracks (9 - 15) is 1950! hear the m.c. at the end. he is announcing the george shearing quintet with for the first time cal tjader, toots thielemans and another name i can´t understand. so the date must be around early 1953! and before the stan getz feature gerald wilson announced: "now a young man who has for the past 5 years won the top spots of metronome and down beat magazin awards". does anybody in what year stan getz won for the first time an award? but nevertheless i think it´s great music by the great gerald wilson and a new entry in the too little wardell gray discography. keep boppin´ marcel

yes, it´s leo parker and gonsalves. wilson maybe. but in the stan hasselgard section it´s not hasselgard on any of that pictures!! interesting to see the people sitting at the stage in town hall on the lester young concert. and another rare picture of prez with his metal (?) clarinet. and, of course, bird on tenor with hampton (wow), any broadcasts of this event from the band box? (not known till now...) keep boppin´ marcel

More Jazz at Comblain La Tour lp on EBAY
bichos replied to jazzhound's topic in Offering and Looking For...
according to the bud powell discography by claude schlouch the only cd issue of this powell track was on an italian "musica jazz" cd. (mjcd 1095). but: "bonus cd, not for sale". i think i came out together with a magazin?? but there must be more bud powell from comblain-la-tour, because i don´t think that he played only one tune!! keep boppin´ marcel -
why did Bird play a plastic saxophone
bichos replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous Music
hello all, just for fun and not really important - but here is a list (from various sources) of charlie parker playing the white grafton plastic saxophon (on recorded sound and on pictures): -there are 2 pictures in the big book "to bird with love" by frances paudras and chan parker on pages 304/305 showing bird and his grafton without date only "collection chan parker". -1 picture by bob douglas from 1953 in riverside, california shown in the booklet of an rhino cd compilation of l.a. jazz anthology on side 46. (i think it´s from the tour with chet baker and carson smith). -2 pictures by huguette (rajotte) schwartz in the booklet of the uptown cd "bird in montreal" on page 13. the other one is in the mark miller book "cool blues, bird in canada" on page 45. it´s from the chez paree club, montreal, febr. 7, 1953. -8 pictures by harold robinson from massey hall, toronto. may 15. 1953. seven are shown in the book "cool blues" by mark miller and one is on the cover of the uptown cd "bird in montreal". there is maybe the most famous parker pic with plastic sax (all the years credited to the frank driggs collection and not mentioned harold robinson) -4 pictures by alan scharf also from the massey hall concert. shown also in mark miller´s "cool blues" and one different in geoffrey haydon: "quintet of the year". -1 picture with candido, dizzy gillespie and bird at birdland from 1950. (i don´t have a photographers name and i think it´s not 1950 but later). that makes only 18 pictures in toto. but i think there must be more! bird plays his grafton also on this dates: -probably on feb. 5, 1953 on cbc-tv, montreal. (only the soundtrack is avaiable on uptown cd. the cinescope is lost- till now. -feb. 7, 1953: chez paree club, montreal . (also on uptown cd.) -feb. 22, 1953: club kavakos, washington. (with the orchestra, the famous "one night in washington" gig with bird flying through the arrangements without knowing them. wonderful!!) -may 09. 1953: birdland, new york city (an aircheck from boris rose, the mc bob garrity talks about his white plastic sax) -may 15., 1953: massey hall, toronto -may 09. 1954: open door, new york city -ca. spring 1952 mccann´s, leominster, mass. and after that - rollaway ballroom, revere beach, mass. (no recordings from that gigs) i hope, not boring anyone with this little list.... keep boppin´ marcel -
why did Bird play a plastic saxophone
bichos replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous Music
hello all, i don´t think that it´s the grafton sax on the picture with monk. on this (more focused) picture it looks different to me: and i don´t think that bird used the plastic grafton on his tour in sweden. i´m not at home in the moment but tomorrow i´ll be back with a list how often bird is documented with the white one. (as far as i know...) keep boppin´ marcel -

Maurice Rocco
bichos replied to skeith's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
here is one picture: Maurice Rocco Plays Piano And Dances Original caption: 05/10/1946-New York: "Zanzibar" inaugurates a new era in night clubs. Right in the heart of Broadway, with its theaters, movie houses, and big name hotels the Cafe Zanzibar draws a large portion of New York's night club trade. One of the highlights of the Zanzibar entertainment is the versatile Maurice Rocco, who is seen here during the show as he bangs out a rousing "Boogie Samba" on the piano, and dances at the same time. Image: © Bettmann/CORBIS i remember hearing him on one of the "jubilee" shows from the mid 40´s. boogie-woogie piano and clowning around in the manner of harry "the hipster" gibbson or cecil gant. -

hello, thank you all for informations! jpf: a little correction (to jeroen de valk), the names of pianist and bass players are bianchi, not biachi. elsie was also a fine singer. she made some recordings in the 60´s with her trio. couw: sorry, my technic equipment and my know how don´t allow me to send mp3´s. dave james: the sound of the two cd´s (i think you mean "köln concert" and "lost holland concert") is passable for privat amateur recordings. köln and scheveningen is good, mainz is overmodulated and zürich (without twardzik) has an opera singer in the backround (from another radio station near by). but musically it´s wonderful. and, hey, it´s baker and twardzik!! for me a must!! keep boppin´ marcel

Hello all, i just finished to hear the new chet baker cd „the lost holland concert featuring dick twardzik“ on rlr records. There are three concert recordings from september 18, 1955 in scheveningen, netherlands, september 21, 1955 in mainz, germany (formerly on philology records) and september 24, 1955 in zürich, switzerland. Wonderful music and new jewels in the short discography of pianist dick twardzik! Now my question: the last two tracks on this cd are from september 24, 1955 in zürich („happy little sunbeam“ and „moonlight in vermont“, incomplete). Liner notes by one matías rinar mentioned twardzik on piano, jimmy bond on bass and peter littman on drums but here is chet´s announcement: „thank you very much, it´s very groovy to be here this evening in switzerland my first trip to switzerland. Just finished doing little television bit (?) and now come over here to play a few tunes for you with a very wonderful rhythm section. Siro and elsie bianchi and rene nathworth (?) in the rhythm section...“ So, it´s not his quartet with twardzik, bond and littman! Siro bianchi plays bass and elsie bianchi piano but knows anybody the right name of the drummer? I understand „rene nathworth“.... and where are the others of chet´s regular quartet? Is there any tv appearence of baker from switzerland? (he mentioned it!) There is no answer in the online version of jack chamber´s dick twardzik biography and discography here http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~chambers/twardzik2.html and here http://www.jazzitude.com/chambers_sadwalk01.htm maybe in the now(?) coming book „bouncing with bartok“ by jack chambers. (man, we are waiting for years for the publishing!!) any suggestions are welcome! Thanks in advance! Keep boppin´ Marcel

Who will achieve his work ? hi, Tom Cullen, a longtime friend and collaborator of White, said he resumed working on the project after White's death because "I felt an obligation" and he hopes it will be published later this year. It will have two volumes, be 1,500 pages long and have numerous photographs, he said. Here´s the complete article: http://www.jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/sh...ead.php?t=15788 keep boppin´ marcel

hello all, i found on the dutch online jazzmagazin in februrary www.jazzflits.nl a short report, that larry applebaum found in the archives of the library of congress in washington, d.c. unknown acetates of a jam session from 1942 with lester young. he reported this via wbgo-radio. applebaum found last year the monk/coltrane carnegie hall tapes from 1957. has anybody more informations about that new find? Is this jam session aircheck from 1942 known to collectors? personal, titles, date and circumstances? no plans in the moment to issue the new find… thanks in advance keep boppin´ marcel
