maybe it was the outtakes of "anna and the king of siam (avaiable on varese sarabande) or some outtakes of "on dangerous ground" (you can hear some sound-samples here): http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=3700 track 21 (on the right side has one minute of outtakes) keep boppin´ marcel

The Hawk footage does show up-- I think at the very end of the first disc. ah, yes thank you - there it is, but also from back to forward! here is a link where you can see the sequence in right direction. (hawkins put his cigarette on the floor at the end) click on the "NEW - Extra Scenes from the Mili/Grantz session - 1950" (it takes a little time ´till the film starts) http://www.birdlives.co.uk/content/view/49/126/ keep boppin´ marcel

ups! i mean composer! -sorry, folks!

bernard herrmann - one of my two favourites (the other one is charles koechlin)! love his "vertigo". and everytime i hear his work "for the fallen", i can´t hold my tears. it´s absolutly deep emotional music for me that touched my mind!! "beneath the 12-mile reef" is also very moving! you can feel the up and down of the sea!! amazing is the "snow ride" of "the magnificent ambersons": the unheard combination of nine (!) celestas!!! have a lot of the "varese sarabande" cd´s with joel mcneely and the seattle symphony orchestra or the royal scotish orch. but i prefer the original recordings with herrmann himself as conductor also on various labels as "varese sarabande", "film score monthly", "tcm", "cloud nine records", "tsunami" and "sound factory". the last two are kind of bootlegs (?). and think of all the music in hitchcock´s films. (including the sound effects in "the birds")! a great, great composter!! keep boppin´ marcel

yes, the second dvd is amazing with all the photos by paul nodler including this unique charlie parker sleeping on a table!!! only one sequence is missing (or i don´t see it) compare with the original "improvisation" issue that i have on a japanese vhs from 1996: coleman hawkins dismounting his sax and smoking during this incident. and something only for bird aficionados: jacques muyal mentioned in the liner notes that only 52 second of bird appeard on film during the famous metronome session where they played "groovin´ high". that must be of course "hot house". nevertheless it´s a great dvd with all the material together in great quality. (you can get the whole japt film on youtube and other video portales but in what quality...?) keep boppin´ marcel

no, no, when they release the webster-box, it will be more than 35 years ago..... and i think that they will continue the d.e.t.s. at the 100th anniversary of the first "date with the duke" broadcast...... never give up hope. keep swingin´ marcel

there must be a recording (poor quality tape) from the blue note club, philadelphia, pa, with bird and brownie from between 04. - 09. january 1954. it is reported in piet koster "bird lore" charlie parker discography (almere 2002) and also in the brownie discography by bob weir (almere 2004). similar details in the koster book of a second poor quality tape of brownie and bird at the same club on 14 - 19 june 1954 are incorrect because brownie was in california at this time. but: there exist a privat tap of bird and brownie jamming at brown´s house in philadelphia!! larue brown metioned this in an long interview with phil schaap in ca. june 1991 at larue´s home. schaap asked if they played together and larue brown answered that they played in philadelphia at a gig but never recorded professionally togehter. and than she continued: "...i´m in the posession of the tapes because they were done in our home and they are in the (?) bold (?) and perhaps our grandson clifford brown III will do something with them one day." that´s the stuff every brownie and bird fanatic wants to hear...! keep boppin´ marcel

basel, switzerland, september 25, 1953: a new cd on the swiss „tcb“ label in it´s „swiss radio days jazz series“ vol. 17, is out now. with this concert recording of lionel hampton and his orchestra from his european tour 1953 there are new recordings of clifford brown!! the sound quality is superb! it is a welcome in the rare recordings of this big band of 1953. (to my knowlegde there are only 7 other concert-recordings by hampton on this tour (and only 3 with clifford brown solos!) the répertoire is part of well known hampton features (on vibes and piano) and exciting big band jump. there are solos by oscar estelle, baritone sax, anthony ortega, alto and clarinet, james cleveland, tb, the tenor saxes of clifford scott and clifford solomon and the trumpet section of walter williams, art farmer, benny bailey, clifford brown and quincy jones (he is also on piano because the original pianist george wallington was fired a few days earlier). there is more from this concert in basel on part 2 coming out in autumn this year. keep boppin´ marcel

hi steven, i think that "gambit" copied the old "royal jazz" cd. i don´t have an adress but i think that they are operating from spain or andorra. and all the labels like "gambit", "rlr", "jazz factory", "lonehilljazz", "impro-jazz dvd", "definitive" and a few more are from the same people. www.jazzmessengers.com is the only source i have. b.t.w.: for me the sound on the royal jazz cd is o.k. but you hear only what you will hear. was the "roayl jazz" cd (from denmark, i think) official (means your friend alain knows about it?) i think the gambit isn´t it. keep boppin´ marcel

the CD isn't on Lonehill but on one of their associated labels, the one they use for live tapes. they're both releases of collector live tapes, not label owned material. if they have been released before it will have been in the same manner as now. and i think i heard the Köln concert was unreleased before. i think there's also an unissued Dutch concert (Den Haag?) from that tour. or wasn't that also recently released by the same label? i think so. i'm normally not very interested in this kind of live tapes, since they tend to be of very very low sonic quality. they're normally fan recordings made on some home taperecorder. the two dutch concerts from chet baker (amsterdam and scheveningen) are now out officially on the label of the dutch jazz archieve. you can get this release from their site (unfortunately only in the dutch language) http://www.jazzarchief.nl/diensten/cds.html remember: the pianist is dick twardzik!!!! keep boppin´ marcel

just saw at www.jazzmessengers.com the "gambit" reissue of the long out of print cd from "royal jazz" "rene thomas - pony poindexter- at the blue note in paris from october 1964. (the al anthon privat recordings). exactly the same 9 tracks as on the rjd 512 cd from 17 years ago. (again thanks to andorra.....) keep boppin´ marcel http://www.jazzmessengers.com/ProductInfo.asp?ref=116354
