Nice win by Kansas over Texas today, to claim the Big 12 Championship. Durant twisted his ankle in the second half, and wasn't the same after returning. Kansas is peaking at the right time though. Will be interesting to see how far they can go. Why is the NCAA Tournament comprised of 65 teams? For some reason I assumed it was 64. 65 seems odd.

Happy Birthday!

I have a Rollins disc called "First Moves" on Jazz Door. Live recording from 1974 with Rufus Harley, Yoshiaki Masuo, Gene Perla, and David Lee. Sounds great! Here's one online list of Jazz Door's titles. I don't know if it's complete or not. Other than the above two, looks like 1218 includes the 1957 Sonny Rollins Quartet.

Have a great day, Al!! Best wishes for many more!

Thanks Chris! Getting excited about Aggie basketball is something that's been foreign to me - back in my day the best player we had was Don Marbury (Stefon's older brother), who never even made the pros.

Beatles Anthology 10-hour video box set
Aggie87 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have the dvd box set, got it cheap during a store closure sale. It has alot of material that wasn't included in the original over-the-air broadcast (or the VHS set, I think). I remember how big of an "event' it was when the Anthology was originally broadcast, and remember being totally engrossed at the time - and how cool it was to see the "Threetles" united at the time. It was almost like time stood still: -
Great Texas/Texas A&M game last night! Horns won by 2 in double overtime. I'm not sure I've seen a player like Kevin Durant before. He's big like Kevin Garnett, but can do everything, seemingly. Dude can hit any shot on the floor, effortlessly. I think if he decides to come out, he'll be the first pick in the draft. And Acie Law sunk a 3 pointer for A&M to tie it and go into overtime, then hit another one to send it to double overtime. The guy has been Mr. Clutch all year long.

I remember enjoying that one when it came out. I should watch it again to see how it's aged. I've always associated this movie with Scorsese's "After Hours", similar dark comedies.

Way to go, Paul - couldn't be happier for ya!

Great pictures, Barak! Glad everything went so well - congrats to all involved. PS - You guys fly halfway around the world, to drink Sam Adams?? -
I think it used to say 2002 on there. The link's been there since at least 2003. Well worth the download. Now, rereading this thread, I see John B mentioned it back in Oct 03, I guess I'm finally catching up. Better late than never! Thanks for the info!

Bump.... There's a live solo recording that's available on AndrewHillJazz.com, recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. It's about 40 minutes or so. Anybody know when this was recorded? There's no date given.

You gotta look more closely, and you won't be astonished as much. There's a large, active baseball thread.

what are you drinking right now?

Edit: I once spent a summer in Houston. I have felt your pain. Houston is quite a bit worse (IMO) than the DFW area. The humidity's alot higher. After some point, it really doesn't matter though - it's all just hot and sticky.

I dug Norah, and I think I said so at the time. I still dig Norah. Her new album is quite good. She certainly didn't deserve to be such a polarizing figure. It's not mentioned in the article, but I do remember provoking the ire of Tom Evered when I commented that EMI seemed to be downplaying Norah's ethnicity. My point was that with the paucity of Asian Americans in the pop music world, it would be nice to note that one of the top selling recording artists of the moment was - in fact - Indian (or part-Indian). This had nothing to do with the whole Norah/Ravi thing, but rather the fact that the cover photo for "Come Away With Me" looked like it had been specifically designed to lighten Norah's skin color. Tom FREAKED at this observation, and claimed that it wasn't anybody at Blue Note or EMI that was trying to surpress Norah's ethnic background. (But then why was it such a revelation that Norah is Ravi's daughter? Why not just mention it straight out in the press release on her website?) I don't recall that exchange. I'm guessing the writer of this article completely missed it. I think Norah is the one who originally suppressed the information about being Ravi Shankar's daughter, not Blue Note. edit - I also don't think most people here really "hated" Norah, it's simply the fact that she wasn't what we consider(ed) to be an artist that belonged on Blue Note. Stick her on any of the other EMI labels, and I'm sure the BNBB discussions about her would have been quite different. edit 2 - Now in hindsight it seems more clear that she was simply the first step in a different direction that Blue Note was ultimately taking. Had she not been successful, maybe this would have never happened, but BN has had alot more Norah-related releases since then (Amos Lee, Keren Ann, Bees on a Cake or whatever they're called), none of which most here would consider to be jazz material. -
It's a pity people always mention coffeeshops (=drugs) in relation to Amsterdam. The city really has so many other things to offer... Maybe we're reading different threads, as this one seems to focus much more on some of the other aspects of the city. I happen to love Amsterdam, and think it's one of the most beautiful cities of its size anywhere. However, for most non-Dutch people, your coffee shops are an interesting/unusual concept, because legalized, retail marijuana tends not to exist elsewhere.

While I applaud the fact that he attempted to do something, his method is somewhat strange/comical, not to mention risky. Calling the police might have been a smarter and safer approach, had a rapist or two with weapons actually been there.

As an aside, I think OCONOMOWOC would be a great album name for the next SCOLOHOFO release.

Sword seized after man mistakes porn for rape OCONOMOWOC, Wisconsin (AP) -- A man says he broke into an apartment with a cavalry sword because he thought he heard a woman being raped, but the sound actually was from a pornographic movie his upstairs neighbor was watching. "Now I feel stupid," said James Van Iveren, who has been charged in the case. "This really is nothing, nothing but a mistake." According to a criminal complaint, the neighbor told police that Van Iveren pounded on the door and kicked it open without warning February 12, damaging the frame and lock. "Where is she?" Van Iveren demanded, thrusting the sword at the neighbor, the complaint said. "Where is she?" The neighbor told police Van Iveren became increasingly aggressive as he repeated the question, insisting that he had heard a woman being raped. The complaint said that, with the sword pointed at him, the neighbor led Van Iveren throughout the apartment, opening closet doors to prove he was alone. The neighbor later played for police the part of the DVD he believed Van Iveren heard downstairs. Van Iveren, 39, of Oconomowoc, was charged with criminal trespass, criminal damage and disorderly conduct, all while using a dangerous weapon, and is scheduled to appear in court March 5. Together, the misdemeanor counts carry a maximum sentence of 33 months in jail. Van Iveren said Tuesday that he heard a woman "screaming for help," grabbed the sword, bounded up the stairs, kicked in the apartment door and confronted the man who lived there. "I intended to hold it behind my back and knock. But I froze and instead, what happened happened," he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Contesting his neighbor's account, Van Iveren said he didn't look anywhere in the apartment except the front room, and that he never threatened the neighbor with the sword. "I had the sword extended, but that was all," he said. Van Iveren, who lives with his mother in the downstairs apartment, said he did not call police when he heard the noises because he does not have a telephone. He said he barely knew the upstairs tenant. Police seized Van Iveren's sword, which he said was a family heirloom. ****** The Swordsman:
