Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts
Aggie87 replied to kh1958's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Dammit! Can't make it. If you can't make this show (I can't either...grrrr) - as mentioned earlier in this thread, the Tyner Septet will also be performing in Austin on 18 November, which is a Saturday. That show is at U.T. Hogg Memorial Auditorium, a part of the UT Performing Arts Center program. -
I was gonna say "cool cover" but I guess i won't bother now! Still looks like someone created during a 10 minute session with a pretty simple computer program, to me...

That reminds me of something that happened to me years ago when I worked at B&N. I was the children's department manager, and my boss (the store manager) got on my case because of some vaguely dirty joke I had told in the privacy of the break room (among staff only). Everybody laughed, but he called me into his office and told me that he was going to change my assignment to the regular book floor (which amounted to a demotion) because he didn't think I could be trusted around children! I was shocked. Do people really have this idea that people who work around children don't (or shouldn't) have an adult sense of humor? It would be ok for me to joke about Batman getting it on with Robin if I worked with adults, but if I work with kids that must mean I'm pervert? Weird! And the more I think about it, I wouldn't want to hear you making off-color jokes about adult subjects if you were the teacher of my child. It would bother me. What you do in the privacy of your own life is your choice, but I would be uncomfortable with you around my child too, if I know you acted and joked like that around your colleagues and potentially your students. Regardless of your intent. A teacher sexually assaulted an 8 year old girl in one of the schools here, a couple of years ago. Stuff happens. People want to trust their teachers, but there are perverts out there in all professions. Don't give parents a reason to distrust you, or even be suspicious.

I guess I missed the part where I saw you making a joke, or making fun of anyone. Actually, I never did see you make any comment that appeared to be making fun of either the Batman/Robin dynamic (which I think most of us figured out was "odd" when we were like 13 yrs old), or NAMBLA itself. Not knowing you, I have no way of knowing what your motive was for posting these cartoons without any comment - you left out the context.

I'm sure I'll pick this up, but that cover is awful. Like his most recent release with the Big Band.

Porcupine Tree's concert DVD "Arriving Somewhere" is now available for pre-order from their website, for anyone interested. Lazarus (4.06) 5. Hatesong (9.14) 6. Don't Hate Me (8.38) 7. Mother and Child Divided (5.11) 8. Buying New Soul (7.17) 9. So Called Friend (4.55) 10. Arriving Somewhere but Not Here (12.57) 11. Heartattack in a Layby (4.07) 12. Start of Something Beautiful (7.19) 13. Halo (6.42) 14. Sound of Muzak (5.14) 15. Even Less (6.54) 16. Trains (7.18) 17. Lazarus - promo clip directed by Lasse Hoile 4. Start of Something Beautiful (live film directed by Przemyslaw Vshebor and Lasse Hoile ) 5. Halo (live film directed by Lasse Hoile) 6. Mother and Child Divided (live film directed by Lasse Hoile) 7. Gavin Harrison - Cymbal Song film (in stereo and 5.1 audio) 8. Photo Gallery (with exclusive ambient music by RB+SW) edit - I could quibble a bit with the track selection on Disc 1 (only four songs that are pre-In Absentia), but otherwise this looks like it could be really good!

Perhaps instead of continuing to post images you could actually explain why you're posting these?

Sorry, but I don't even get the point of posting this.

I think Steven Bernstein is interesting - he's got a couple of recordings under his own name on Tzadik, the Diaspora series, that are excellent. He's also in Sex Mob, which have released a number of very good (and fun) recordings. I need to check out his new Millennial Territory Orchestra thing.

What's the Blues equivalent of the Organissimo Bulletin Board?
Aggie87 replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
That's a plus, not a drawback! I think 98% of any hostilities/hard feelings that happen between members here on this board result from the discussions in the political threads. -

Mosaic big box sets
Aggie87 replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
This is probably one of the European sets that aren't directly from Mosaic, and aren't numbered. Still a good deal though! Yes, it's one of the Universal (import) Mosaics. The source really doesn't bother me and it would be hard to pass up on that price. Just from various conversations I've read on various jazz boards, I'm not the only one to pick up the Tal Farlow because it was available at such a low price. If this set pans out to be as good as the first impression I got from listening to samples then this is going to be quite the bargain. It IS quite a bargain - I got it (the Euro-version) for about that price as well. You're going to love it! And yes Ron, I agree, it IS still a Mosaic... -

Does "A Bigger Bang" belong on that list? I've tried a couple of other later-era RS releases, only to find a few great tracks and alot of filler. Maybe Bang is worth checking out (?).

I guess - looking at it from Concord's standpoint - they don't need to hire extra help to process these orders more quickly, they'll simply use whatever minimal staff they have in their warehouse, and continue plodding through these orders until the stock is gone. It's clearly product they want to unload, equivalent of a fire sale, and if anybody cancels their order out of frustration, another will be waiting in line behind them to snatch up whatever is left. They've got the thousand orders guaranteed, whether 2 guys work in the warehouse, or 20. Which makes better sense financially, since that's what seems to be their bottom line here? It's still frustrating from the buyer's perspective, as we're used to CD Universe/Amazon/etc and their processing/shipping standards. But again, it's great prices for the products we're all getting, when they eventually do arrive.

I have the previous cd with the cover that EKE posted. Sonically is this one worth "upgrading" to the RVG?

I've already informed Eva (many times in fact) that if she ever decides to move back here to her hometown, I'll be available for her. Now if I can just get that restraining order lifted....

Dallas, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, Etc. Jazz & Other Concerts
Aggie87 replied to kh1958's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Not Austin (or Dallas for that matter!), but the Dave Holland Big Band will be playing in San Antonio, on September 16th. I may try to make it up for this show, as it's on a Saturday night. It's at the city's annual "Jazz'SAlive" fest, at Travis Park. Any board members planning to go to this, or interested? -
