  1. Oh, and Bud Powell's "A Portrait of Thelonious". And "Monk's Casino", which not only covers Monk, it covers EVERY Monk tune.
  2. I'm not Lon, but I'd recommend the Paul Motian tribute "Monk in Motian" with Lovano, Frisell, Geri Allen, and Dewey Redman. "Play Monk and Powell" is about half Monk: Motian's got a number of Monk tunes scattered throughout his discography in addition to these two.
  3. If that's the case, it's better not to buy any discs at that price ($5 + $2.79 shipping), because yourmusic.com has 99% of the same titles for $6.99 apiece, which includes shipping. Plus, you can join and quit yourmusic at any time. And I THINK if you didn't already have a yourmusic account, and you switch over from BMG, they will set it up so that you don't have to purchase monthly titles through your queue.

  5. Strange town you live in, Conn! (I wonder if they'll start putting parking meters in people's driveways!) Ohioans ticketed for parking in own driveways TOLEDO, Ohio – Residents of Toledo, Ohio, are complaining that they received $25 tickets for parking their vehicles in their own driveways. Mayor Carty Finkbeiner says he stands by the citations handed out last week by the Division of Streets, Bridges and Harbor. He says the tickets were issued under a city law against parking on unpaved surfaces, including gravel driveways. During a news conference Monday, Finkbeiner ignored a reporter's question of whether the crackdown and fines were related to the city's budget crisis. The three-term mayor faces a recall vote in November. Critics have claimed he's wasted city money. City Councilman D. Michael Collins calls the ticketing "Mickey Mouse nonsense." He has told residents he'll try to have the citations rescinded.
  6. Not youtube, but a cool version of Late in the Evening, by Paul Simon, the Roots, and the Antibalas horns, here.
  7. One of those deer is not quite like the others.
  8. I hear ya - nice to get to know this music before you hear it live. I'm sure it will be a good show either way though. I'm assuming they'll play the 55 minute piece live, which would leave the remainder of the show for either the other pieces or older stuff. Still thinking about hitting the Philly show.
  9. ...or maybe the album plans won't change very much at all: from www.porcupinetree.com "The Incident" Porcupine Tree are happy to announce the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album "The Incident". The record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records worldwide on 21st September, as a double CD. The centre-piece is the title track, which takes up the whole of the first disc. The 55-minute work is described as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again’.” The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December - Flicker, Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover feature on a separate EP length disc to stress their independence from the song cycle. Video footage of the band in the studio working on The Incident, as well as audio previews, will be available online soon. The band will tour extensively to promote the album from mid September onwards. I'm excited about this one!
  10. I wasn't aware of this one. Looks like it doesn't come out until next week though. And it's interesting to see Lovano on Tzadik, with Dave Douglas & Zorn. I guess it's through his SF Jazz Collective work with Douglas? Or has Lovano done more work like this that I'm not aware of?
  11. Gee, you sure you can afford that one? By the way, when should I pick you up at Philly airport for the organissimo show this coming week? I'd be there tomorrow if I could - I love youse guys! (do you all talk that way??)
  12. I agree with your comments. Magic gave this game away, particularly at the free throw line. Make a few more during regulation, and they win this game. And if that elbow to Nelson's head had been called, they may win the game too. Either way, the Magic aren't quite there yet. But I think they play team ball better than the Lakers, in many ways.
  13. What's wrong with the picture is that your domestic swill is covering up that nice lantern! And here's a picture of Blake with Eade:
  14. Think it's Ran Blake (?)

  16. Aggie, you're giving the rest of us some ammo, whenever we feel the need to humiliate you! LOL - Trust me, there's plenty of ammo in about 8700 of my other posts! Oh yeah? What's in the other 153 posts? Hey, those are the exception that prove the rule!
  17. Nice shot by Fisher to send tonight's game into OT. Jameer Nelson shoulda been guarding him a bit closer though. And a bad play by the Magic to end the 4th qtr - there should have been alot better shot set up than the one that Pietrus got off.
  18. If we're staying away from vocalists, here are some previously unmentioned female jazz musicians (that I think are better than Diana Krall): Emily Remler Cindy Blackman Sylvie Courvoisier Susie Ibarra Jenny Scheinman Jutta Hipp Anat Cohen oh yeah, and: Ruby Braff Tina Brooks Gigi Gryce Valery Ponomarev

  20. I'm guilty of this, and don't think I'll ever get past it. Sorry, Noj, but I'm trying to be honest. I'm convinced he paid that girl off to drop the charges, and that he was guilty. I have no proof, just what I believe happened. PS - I otherwise like the Lakers.
  21. 11 discs (buy 10, get 1 free), priced at $5.98 apiece, free shipping, and a 20% discount! Here's my haul, for a total of $47.84. Some of these I probably wouldn't have bought at full price, but at $4.35, no worries. Miles Davis - Live At The 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival Thelonious Monk - Live At The 1964 Monterey Jazz Festival Wynton Kelly - Kelly Blue SACD McCoy Tyner - Illuminations SACD McCoy Tyner - Land Of Giants SACD Gary Burton - Generations Gary Burton - For Hamp, Red, Bags, and Cal Chick Corea And Gary Burton - The New Crystal Silence Ron Carter with Eric Dolphy & Mal Waldron - Where? 22. I love this picture, Bev!
