  1. Here's what is in my copy: "George Lewis and Bill Frisell are total musicians. Over the years they have earned legendary status as MONSTERS on their respective instruments. But even those already familiar with their work are in for a shock with this disc, as the naked quality of this drumless, bassless band spotlights their incredible musicianship and deep understanding of tradition. George and Bill have four of the most musical ears I've ever run into. George's beautiful sense of harmony and counterpoint is very much in the foreground here, especially on the heads, and his tonal blend with Bill's guitar is at times almost beyond belief. He also swings his fucking ass off. Frisell's passion for the guitar work of Jim Hall is well known in certain circles; he once described it as "something that was just in there, making everything sound good". Of course he was really talking about himself, and his remark is particularly relevant in the context of this band. When Bill does surface from the trio texture he kills you with one of his tasty country funk lines. One really could not hope for two more open, creative and sensitive musicians. Two true musical geniuses, masters of improvisational ensemble playing. On many levels, this is a perfect combination of three distinctly different personalities. The sympathy and respect we share is evident on every track. Check it out. -John Zorn, March 1988"
  2. Plus, there is additional, never-before-heard music (and video) being included this time around. I'm sure I'll replace my discs with these.

    Ron Carter

Picked this up in the recent Concord sale, and dig it too!
  4. Not written *for* Rosanna, but she's in the Madonna video "Into the Groove", and was infatuated with her in the movie it came from, Desperately Seeking Susan. Into the Groove
  5. The Red CD/DVDA is available for pre-order from Steven Wilson's website, for a pretty decent price, $16.15.
  6. Had a very nice Montepulciano last time I was in Brooklyn, was meaning to find out what it was, thanks to this thread for the reminder!
  7. Happy Birthday, Jan - wish you'd post more often!
  8. You're lucky to have used stores. There are two remaining in my town - half price books, and one indy place. Neither have the greatest selection. I would think since everyone else is going to digital music, that people would be dumping CDs left and right. In theory I guess that's happening, but I still don't see very much worthwhile titles to pick up.
  9. I haven't been checking yourmusic as much lately, but here are a few they're listing: Dizzy Gillespie - Dizzy on the French Riviera Freddie Hubbard - The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard Cassandra Wilson - Closer to You - The Pop Side Elvis Costello - Momofuku Bela Fleck - Throw Down Your Heart Muddy Waters - Authorized Bootleg - Fillmore '66 Lynyrd Skynyrd - Authorized Bootlegs - Winterland '76, Cardiff '75 Radiohead - the 2 and 3 cd collectors sets of OK Computer, Pablo Honey, and the Bends David Bowie - Santa Monica '72
  10. If she's ever sent you one, then I think you have a point. If she's never sent one, then I think she has a right to ask for you not to send them to her. I don't like any junk/mass emails, from anyone. Most go into the circular file without being opened.

  12. I agree - sounds like you have a good perspective on things, Phil! Best wishes moving forward.
  13. <hand wringing> I have a hard time getting excited about him nowadays. I'm convinced drugs helped him win some of the previous races. </hand wringing>
  14. That might be because some of them, such as the "Blue Note Works" TOCJs you've been selling, are (or at least were until recently) a bit of hype on the Hoffman forum. In my case I usually prefer trades to purchases and sales. I'm not in this to make money, nor are there really all that many titles that are offered for sale that I'm looking for. I like to explore and discover music, and it's fun when you can find things you enjoy unexpectedly. This seems to happen for me more when money isn't involved, which creates a different set of expectations, and takes it away from "fun", towards "serious". That said, I do buy on here occasionally, and I do like to make trades that are relatively equal in value.
  15. Happy Birthday!
  16. Happy Birthday from one Erik to another!
  17. Antonio McDyess is going to the Spurs. If he stays healthy, he can be a contributor. I'll say one thing for the Spurs, they're going to be a different team next year, even with the "Big 3" returning - by adding Richard Jefferson, McDyess, and DeJuan Blair in the draft.
  18. I just ordered the Stitt - too good a price to pass up; going to wait on anything else for now. I also finally received my 2nd Concord order (from 12 June) today. This one took forever to get here, but is complete. It did contain the Gil Evans SACD and This is Criss, for anyone still curious.
  19. Completely agree - don't let the distance scare you!
