  1. Out on CD now! http://www.nimbuswest.com/ Good spot! Thanks for the heads-up, colin.
  2. Three of his albums have been released by Lonehill on a doubler a while back.

I agree completely and, no, I'm NOT offended.
  4. I can't seem to find a link to Southport Records anywhere, Chuck. Do they have a website? Southport Thanks for that, Chuck. Not the easiest site to navigate, unfortunately.

  6. Yes, it's a fine set.....but I've always enjoyed the nessa recordings more. Just saying......
  7. That may be true but when you're in the mood for that sort of West Coast jazz, his recordings usually 'hit the spot'. I think a box set by him would be generally well received even if the chance of it ever happening (legitimately, anyway) is very unlikely.
  8. I wonder why Howard Rumsey has never had "The Mosaic Treatment". Too many recordings, perhaps?
  9. Mentioned in another thread here: FiveFour Records
  10. Seconded, it's an amazing set with relatively excellent sound. It thrashes all other Hawkins collections. Hans, there was a boxset that came out on Affinity called "The Complete Recordings 1929/1941". Affinity Boxset Do you happen to know how it compares with the JSP set in completeness & sound? Believe it or not, there is not that much overlap between the two sets. The Affinity set releases all known tracks with Coleman Hawkins other than those with Fletcher Henderson during 1929-1941. The Mosaic does not attempt to be comprehensive. Most of the earlier tracks are selected numbers with Fletcher Henderson that have Hawkins solos. None of them are on the Affinity box. The Affinity box includes a number of discs that contain all of Hawkins' European recordings from the 1930s. The Mosaic box contains none of these recordings for copyright reasons. There is a strong overlap on a few discs that contain Hawkins' American 1939-1941 recordings, but the Mosaic also has a good chunk from the later 1940s that is not on the Affinity box. Bottom line: If you like Hawkins and have the Affinity box, you still need the Mosaic. That is even separate from the major improvement in sound quality. Thanks for that, John but it was a comparison between the Affinity and JSP sets that I was after. It's irrelevant now because I decided to buy a copy of the JSP set, anyway, a few days ago and I'm very happy with it. The remastering sounds terrific.
  11. Not as admiral as him, obviously.
  12. Thanks for that, Steve.
  13. Yes, a very strange mixture. Does anyone know anything about FiveFour? BTW I see they're releasing this next week: Is this it's first general release on CD?
  14. Thanks for the heads-up. I've just put my order in.
  15. I've just heard back from Steeplechase Records and they tell me they can supply CDs direct for 26 euros post paid. Who pays 26 euros or £21/$34 for "regular" CDs nowadays?....I certainly don't!
  16. I'd contact Peter first. IIRC his prices were quite fair and he should have everything that is in print. Thanks for that Dan but being in the UK I'd have thought it would be better to find someone a bit nearer home. Anyone know who the Steeplechase UK distributor is? Yes, I thought they were the distributor too. However if you do search for Steeplechase on their website, the answer is...nothing!

  18. The price of most Steeplechase CDs as shown on Amazon seems to be very high and I wondered why, since they all seem to be in the current catalogue and the company is only based in Denmark. Has anyone any experience of buying direct from the label and if so, are their prices cheaper?
  19. The Internet is your friend......... Wikipedia
  20. I've just had an e-mail from John Cooper the CEO at Acrobat Music who tells me they will be shipping the Tony Kinsey set next Tuesday, 18 September. He also says that Amazon have yet to order it from him...whatever that means
  21. My Hal Russell arrived yesterday. Thanks Chuck, great service as usual. What a fiery group this was.....I'd forgotten just how good they were. BTW do I detect from the reference in the notes to some further unreleased music, that there's more to come? I do hope so!

  23. I came to this label fairly recently when I bought the three Tommy Whittle CDs, all of which were released with his permission, so nothing shabby there.
  24. contains all of the Harriott/Kinsey material Yes, and quite a bit of other material I can't recall having seen released on CD before. However, I'll need to check a Tony Kinsey discography to confirm that. Update: It looks like all the Joe Harriott tracks have been previously available on a 2xCD called "Killer Joe" and eleven of the tracks by Tony Kinsey on Discs 2 & 3 were released by Harkit on a CD called "Fascinating Rhythm" some years ago. All the other tracks seem to be out on CD for the first time.
  25. This is due out in the near future. Further details here: Acrobat Music
