  1. Pete, Discs arrived yesterday in great shape. Look forward to listening to them this weekend. Thanks
  2. I don't know what this means. I don't know what that means either. I do not find these comments helpful or particularly welcoming to what would appear to be a fairly new member to this Board. He has 11 posts and with comments like this I am sure we should not expect a willingness in the future for him to post anything further. I took his comments to mean he had discovered a release that excited him. One of which I personally was not familiar and yes, I find his enthusiasm refreshing. This Board is slowly becoming completely dominated by a rather small group of self annointed "experts" about all things jazz. At the same time, many of these folks have acquired "moderator" status. Thus may I suggest that you delete all the many posts that you deem unworthy of your clearly superior knowledge and vaunted taste and simply have a private conversation with yourselves. I am sure you will be able to impress one another with those attributes, at least for a while. In the meantime, you can chase off all those who are just beginning to enjoy and explore jazz. Those who have come here to learn, share and hopefully contribute. Their enthusiasm and excitement can be infectious but surely you would not want any of that around here! As a respected member of this community I would hope that you would consider your comments. Of course, maybe, " I just don't know what they mean."
  3. Wes Montgomery Complete Riverside....$90.00....plus free shipping Not a slam dunk but the set often sells for much more. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Riverside-Recordings-Wes-Montgomery/dp/B000000ZG6/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1353685020&sr=1-1&keywords=wes+montgomery+complete+riverside+recordings
  4. Hi, Pm sent on Victor Feldman and the Carl Fontana.
  5. My thoughts as well. What a treasure. To maximize the pleasure that this group brings it is important to spend some significant time with Wayne's lifetime body of work IMHO. He speaks to it all. Amazing really. I look forward to this release.
  6. I would respond exactly the same. I still prefer his later stuff on Steeplechase for some reason and the Black Lion live dates are some of my favorite Dexter.
  7. If you missed it....... Allen Toussaint
  8. No Mr. Jazzman...Thank you.... It had been over a week and not even a peep from other board members. I was beginning to feel shunned. I thought this was a really good program. I love Dex during this period and unlike a lot of what you find on the tube, the sound was pretty good. To be honest, the reaction, or in this case, inaction, of the board made me search out other, more hospitable locals. Spent most of the week at All About Jazz. Glad you liked it.
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZtVsXZcqJo&feature=related some nice dex
  10. Agree 100%. That was the hook. Once in the door you can feed them solid food! When popular music did not lend itself well to improvisation, jazz began to decline. Many have tried to bridge the gap but with very uneven success. I viewed some of Herbie Hancock's more recent projects(New Standards and The River) as an acknowledgement of this. The River received critical acclaim winning a Grammy but not sure that it had the impact we all would hope. Still, it was nice to see Herbie and Wayne bringing their remarkable talent to the issue. There is no easy answer to the issue and the jazz fest organizers have their own set of problems trying to attract a crowd.
  11. Yes, that's a good one; Woody Shaw is also in the front line. Here's another one, even more obscure, on Justin Time, rec. in Montreal, Dec. 1988. It's very good. Bassist Swainson is on this one too, along with Jerry Fulller on drums. Whew! I have never even seen that one..... Something else to look for. To me JH was the essence of a pro. He could do it all inside, outside, solo, small group, big band..... just great!!
  12. PM sent on Dexter Gordon - Swedish Nights (Steeplechase 2 cds) $12
  13. To my ears, when Freddie starts talking about the club the interviewer chimes in and says "all stars"--but hard to tell if he was naming the club or commenting on the musicians. Mark....I believe he says it was Turbo Village...The club was in Brooklyn. It is also referenced here turbo village another reference..... more.............. Steve Kuhn mentions it .....
  14. That is me... Depends on the week. Wayne Shorter is a favorite. And of course,Lee Morgan! No one swings like Lee, IMHO

  21. For those who don't have it memorized Lyrics To me it has always been just a metaphor for a better place...... Kind of like what Sangry says...Texas is a state of mind.
