  9. Amazon's refund was credited to my account yesterday. Add to that $32.97 the $20 Amazon gift card from yesterday's LivingSocial deal, and I've got $52.97 to spend! It's burning a hole in my pocket, as my late mother used to say! I forgot to tell you! Guess what showed up Feb. 15! I contacted Amazon and asked them to charge me again. Not only is Newbury owed the money, but I want to see if I can delete my negative rating of the transaction. I wasn't happy with Newbury's response to my problem, but I never blamed them for the original failure to receive the package. Congratulations GA!!!! Good things come to those who wait........forever
  10. I agree completely. Your comments remind me of a conversation I had with a board member not too long ago. I agree with you whole heartedly as is apparent in my comments below. I had picked up Herbie Hancock's Joni's Letters on a whim and it reminded me how jazz players had utilized pop music and show tunes. It made the music much more accessible to much wider audience, IMHO. I picked up on those thoughts and well; here it is..... My thoughts FWIIW.........
  11. Hoots, I hate that... with computer technology what it is, large outfits like Movie Mars should be ashamed when that happens. My experience with them has been hit or miss. I have had pretty good luck buying brand new items but recently purchased a used cd that was listed as "like new" and sealed. It was sealed in plastic wrap and it was clear that the disc had been treated and buffed to remove what were clearly a number of scratches. Not good IMHO. Not what I consider "like new" I now try to use another vendor..
  12. Any bets on where Blue Note ends up? Do they split up EMI? Speculation anyone?

  17. Most of what I know about Marchel personally came from my close friend who we lost a couple of years ago. He was an amateur/professional alto/tenor/flute player in Dallas and introduced me to Marchel during one of his breaks at Terrilli's. Marchel had a standing gig at Terrelli's and we frequented the place often after that. I remember well the band Shawn references. Andrew Griffith is the 1st call drummer in Dallas(IMHO) and he played with Marchel for quite some time.He is a Board member. It will be interesting for him to chime in on this. The keyboardist was a young protege' at the BTW School for Performing Arts and was headed off to Berkelee, I think. I can't remember his name but he was excellent as well. But Marchel was clearly the star. This was really great straight ahead stuff. He loved to play Coltrane tunes, Central Park West, in particular I think. If you asked him about Coltrane he would say.....Man, that comes from another place !! He was was a really nice guy. The young horn players in town would stand in line and wait for an invitation to the stage. Late in the set Marchel would often invite one up for a tune. It was clearly a "teaching moment" for those lucky enough to garner the invite. Marchel's willingness to help the younger generation probably arose from his own earlier background. As my friend told it, Marchel grew up in South Oak Cliff(Dallas) and would tell others that he attended the Red Garland "school of music" after school. Also attending were Cedar Walton, James Clay and David "fathead" Newman, etc. Red was living there at the time and evidently enjoyed helping the younger guys out. I was also told that Marchel went to New York and had a brief stint with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers but tired of the road and the life rather quickly, returning to Dallas after that. That may explain him sitting in with Art and Wynton when they were in town as kh1958 relates above. I don't know however...... Marchel seemed to know all of the traveling jazz artist that came to town. You could just as easily, however, find him jamming at the South Dallas Cultural Center or a Shelly Carroll's Monday night jam session. He had a real love of the music and demonstrated great humility, at least to his fans. Like I said, most of what I know about Marchel personally came second hand. I would love to read the posts from those who knew him best. I always enjoyed listening to Marchel and really miss his playing. The Dallas jazz scene misses his leadership.Dallas jazz lost one its matriarchs when Marchel passed. I agree with Shawn. My favorite recorded performance is Marchel's Mode.
  18. I am sorry for your loss. It is obvious that your wife felt your love. In that way she was blessed. May Aretha receive similar blessings. She will always be the Queen!
  19. I have been looking for The Hap"nins on CD for some time myself. It is odd that the three OJC releases vary so much in their availability. Rat Race Blues and Saying Something are available at reasonable prices, even though a little hard to find. Not so with Hap"nins... Very difficult to find at reasonable prices. If you find a reasonable source let us know. Until then I will just wait. Usually what happens is I pay a slight premium only to discover that it is the latest "Keepnews" release, or something equally frustrating. Hard to understand the music business these days I guess...... Good luck to you Vic.
  20. Hey Conn. I'll take these two off your hands. Thanks Kenny Dorham, "Short Story" Steeplechase (the word, "Amin" written on the back of the liner notes.)$8 Bennie Green with Art Farmer VICJ $9
