  1. Impossible--I picked up an E.S. boot from ebay, not knowing that it was a boot until it arrived. The seller listed the cd as having a bunch of new songs from the upcoming album, w/o mentioning that they were live. No big "D". It's pretty good, really. The other place where I believe they can be found is sweet adeline, or you could do a google search for Elliott trades or downloads, etc.. My modem is too slow to download 'em, so I get them from friends. There are about 3 or 4 from LA and Stockholm that are fairly recent that shouldn't be too hard to find online. If you strike out, let me know, and we can do a trade or something.
  2. Clinton never really faced any time, though. Can you imagine Kobe getting life? I'm pretty sure he won't, but that would be quite the anti-climax to a promising career.
  3. 2004!!!?!!! Well, hopefully it will be worth the wait. I've heard a few of the tunes-from live recordings, (i.e.,"Don't Go Down", "Pretty Ugly Before", "Strung Out Again") and like them all very much. I've noticed a refinement in his song structures, and the lyrics are-- as always--clever, honest, and funny.
  4. What/who is Couw? I 'd like to get my hands on that discography, too-if possible. Claude? Can you possibly spare an extra copy and I'll pay the shipping? My Pepper came w/ the little box&booklet, not intensely useful or informative. I could burn an OOP for you, too-or somethin'....? Sure am diggin' the music, though. Thanks
  5. I was just at a jazz festival in Utah, and saw this 16 year old Russian kid play. It was beyond description. I went online to see if anyone else had heard him, and non other than Benny Carter was in disbelief. The comparisons to Art Tatum are valid (IMHO), but he seems to have asborbed many other players too (Bill Evans, Chick, McCoy, O.P.)...I don't think I've ever seen the use of the term "prodigy" seem like such an understatement. Eldar Djangirov!
  6. Dex's "Guess I'll......Dry", Coleman Hawkins' "Body and Soul", JC on "Lush Life" (Prestige), and also on "In a Sentimental Mood".
  7. Well, I'm finally sportin' a web address, w/ some jazz artwork for sale...check it out. I guess this is SPAM, but please forgive me...as I knew that some folks here might at least be interested in lookin'. It's all there except for one of Ornette (which should be up there soon). Thanks--MM the site: jazzdrawings.com
  8. Where, how much $, etc.? I'd be interested!
  9. SOLD! Other interested parties-- thanks for your inquiries!
  10. You're in luck. I have a copy of this that I would part with. Email me at: mattcmoor@earthlink.net, if you're still looking.
  11. I listened to the interview last night (per the link in y'r post), and I've read his bio. Also, I've listened to many a recording. I think that he was a bad-ass mother fucker. Especially with Joni Mitchell around '79. Teen-Town rocked my world the first time I heard it on one of those live in NYC recordings. I can't help but feel though, and I don't think that I'm going out on too much of a limb here, that his self-aggrandizing attitude was off-putting. Maybe it was a product of his mental illness, and or insecurity, or both. Sticking to the music , though, I always get a w/ the occassional . Wish he hadn't been flattened by that bouncer.
  12. It will be my next purchase. Thanks, all.
  13. I love his playing, but I have precious few of his recordings as a leader. Hoping someone out there has read it, and can offer a suggestion.???
  14. OK. Thanks, Claude. I thought I'd lost my shit!
  15. I was at a dinner party the other night, and these people had a cat named Mingus, and a dog named Monk. And all of a sudden, my jazz sensibilities were rattled by this guy saying that they appeared on a record together. He thought it was on a cut of "Night in Tunisia". I didn't want to chime in and say that it wasn't true (not being absolutely sure ), but I thought that he may have been thinking of the quintet recordings w/ Bud Powell. Anyway, w/o the obvious compilations, does anyone know if this ever happened? Or better yet, will those of you who certainly know help me clear this up? Am I missing something obvious, or was he ???
  16. Mr. Ties, I live in Portland and there are some suggestions that I'd like to make. The best restaurant in Portland that I'm aware of is called the Bombay Cricket Club. Mid-Eastern and some Mediterranean food there, and it rocks! It is on Hawthorne Blvd., which is in a district bearing the same name. It's rather eclectic and cool, IMHO. As far as jazz clubs go, there is a great piano trio that plays on Tuesdays at a place called the Bluemonk. They're called the Ramsey Embick trio. 3341 SE Belmont. I wish that you were coming in May, as I have an art exhibit hanging up there until the end of May. Hmmm....Besides that, I usually take my friends to strip clubs, not being too much of a culture-vulture. More here per capita than anywhere in the U.S., I am told. I can furnish more appropriate couples action at a later time, when I have more of it...if necessary. Hope you have a good time!

  18. The illusion of the guy getting a hummer is ruined for me by the fact that she's to far to the left.
  19. Oops. It's Effortless Mastery.
  20. Anyone out there ever read this? I think it has helped me elevate my playing as much as any lesson. I find the concept of not trying to sound good all of the time to be very apropos (sp.?). Try it sometime! Hell, it even works with singing!
  21. I chose the Blakey. Not a no-brainer at all, though. On some of the very early Morgan I sometimes think that his "fire" outweighed his variety w/r/t phrasing, ideas, etc.. This isn't to say that he's not my favorite trumpet player from that era. He ruled.
  22. Other alto playing sidemen on BN brings to mind Clarence Sharp, and Kenny Rodgers, who were on early Lee Morgan BN dates. Neither were particularly memorable, though, IMHO. Actually, the former's intonation was memorable
  23. Jaco Thad Bu Chet Mingus Lee Max Freddie God (though I doubt if people called A.Tatum this all that much) Kenny (though these days people might think of G.)
  24. Good to hear, AfricaBrass. Let me emphasize that you also pick up Either/Or, and XO. The Shit.
  25. Impossible--I actually didn't yet live in Portland when Elliott still did, but I know he has roots, many friends and family here. I think he lives in L.A., now. My older brother played a few shows w/ his opening band "Jr. High" in April '99. That tour came through Salt Lake City, where I lived at the time. My cat had a litter the day they played, and one of my friends suggested I name a kitten "Elliott", so I did. I even kept him! So how's that for hardcore?!!! . Anyway, to get back to your point, the scene here is pretty good, but not dripping w/ ES gigs. I wish he played here more often. And yes, there is a band called "Quasi" that I'd check out. They are a two-piece from Portland that used to be his bassist and drummer on tours, and they'd open for him. These guys share certain similarities w/ ES, IMHO. It's the drummer from Sleater-Kinney, and her ex-husband Sam Coomes, who plays a number of odd keyboards, guitars, etc.. His lyrics are depressing like Elliott's, but in a more humorous way, I would say. "Birds" is a good starter for their stuff. Enjoy! :rsmile:
