    FREDDIE IS 67!

happy B-day Freddie! I saw Carl Allen last night and talked to Carl and Vincent Herring about him. Vincent didn't know what he was up to, and Carl called him but hasn't heard back yet. The gig was great last night too.
  6. I wonder when the new trio release will hit. BTW, the black Ibanez is featured on the We Live Here and Imaginary Day DVD's.
  7. I disagree Mike. His blonde Ibanez prototype sounds more like his Gibson than the black Ibanez he was using for a little while. His blonde prototype is really an almost exact copy of his 175, which was taken to Japan, and copied. As a sidebar I'm watching a DVD I made from a bit torrent of an American Garage show in 1980, it sure is a hoot!
  8. well, Herbie's always kept his ear to the ground in terms of current styles. You gotta respect that at least.
  9. two come to my mind: Joe Henderson In Japan McCoy: Enlightenment
  10. Is that the same date as one of the Tokyo concerts from "Live Under the Sky"? the new 2 CD set is a lot better than the original release and the previously unissued second show on disc 2 is great.
  11. I wonder when Sony will bring out Herbie's "VSOP" album
  12. listening to disc 2 of "Live Under the Sky", and I think that maybe not as adventurous outright as the Miles discs, they are fine documents of 70's acoustic jazz. I think the resequencing of disc 1 is a revelation for the first night concert as you can hear the progression of playing through the rainstorm. I also like "Tempest in the Colosseum" a lot too.
  13. the first time I heard a soundclip of "You Bet Your Love" with Herbie on vocals with the vocoder I nearly peed my pants, it was hilarious. I was laughing so hard for like 5 mins straight. Herbie + vocoder= horrible, sad shit
  14. what? no love for Mark Ledford? he did great vocalese
  15. ahh, ok cool.... let us know when you get the material sorted and out for d/l
  16. cool, do you plan to upload stuff via easytree.org?
  17. I d/l this via bit torrent and burned it tonight, its in fucking credible! amazing gig and energy.

    Kenny Garrett

KG I enjoy very much, especially the "Songbook" album. He got sent over to Nonesuch too huh? I hope he releases a live one soon too.
  19. picked up "Miles in Tokyo" last night, great album! "Miles Davis in Europe" is pretty damn good too.
  20. I love both. Hubbard I think has a rounder warmer tone, and Lee's is sharper and brighter, and Freddie tends to go for intense heat right away, playing some astonishing ideas and going for more out playing. Lee builds up the intensity, although by "Live at the Lighthouse" I feel Lee absorbed a great deal of Hub's playing, just listen to his trades with DeJohnette on "Speedball" he attempts one of Freddie's famous trills, a bit slower in execution, but its there.
  21. I got it today in the mail. Great album, honestly I think of it as a fusion record and hear more jazz, Latin and African elements more than anything. The drum solo on "Kyoto" I totally hear Tony, Elvin and Jack DeJohnette style ideas integrated through it.
