Why not do a Montreux '75 box and a Montreux '77 box? Each could probably be housed in maybe five or six CD's, from what I remember. And there was a lot of cross-pollination which would make a box flow well. And the quaility was consistent from what I remember, wouldn't be the yo-yo effect of. say, Blue Note Montreux '73 or Flying Dutchman '71 being gathered in a box. Well, there are 15 albums in the Montreux '77 series, I have 9. Each set runs about 45 minutes with the exception of the Basie Septet, Brown/Jackson, and Peterson jams which lasted a bit longer. All those extra tracks were collected on the "Jam Sessions: Montreux '77" double album which is one CD on the OJC reissue.

Couldn't they have selected a few of the "Montreux '77" titles and put the complete sessions (where applicable) on one disc? Those masterings are still ok, but a few of them I would want to hear upgrades of.

IDK, every video I've pulled up of him he plays pretty inside within the mainstream tradition. If you can suggest something more outside, that'd be wonderful. He's a strong player from the vids I watched. Check out Corey with Roscoe Mitchell. He's also played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Thanks.

Yes, they are wonderful, though I give the slight edge to the second one, "Trio '81". I got the last copy of that from Dusty Groove, years ago. The two of them, plus Ron Carter's "Third Plane" is the complete output of that group as a trio, correct? Not aware of any others (trio-dates only) under Herbie's or Ron's name, nor any under Tony's (correct?) Right, just those three. The "Herbie Hancock Trio" (SRCS 7051-had to look on the shelf) is the second half of the "Third Plane" session, I believe licensed to Sony for release under Herbie's name. Ethan Iverson did a write up on these and I don't agree with him, he finds that and the '81 trio session, aren't that great. They are important just to have Herbie in a trio.

That's true Hans, but you cpmpare "VSOP The Quintet" to "Tempest in the Colosseum" the quality is night and day. Maybe the source for the original "The Quintet" CD mastering wasn't that good.

Will a remastered "The Quintet" VSOP disc sound better over the old CD? the recording quality for that one isn't that good.

If you can find it you'll be well pleased. It's one of the few tribute discs I like (and that's less than 10)

Since Herbie's Columbia box is coming, this is a excellent tribute disc. One of the cool things Beasley does is take "Maiden Voyage" but use the changes for "Tell Me a Bedtime Story", very hip.

I have all the Columbia Herbie I need to including "Flood",. the VSOP and trio discs, but it might be worth it for a few of the acoustic/electric projects that were still great, that I don't have.

Might be worth it just to have copies of "Five Stars", "Flood", and "Dedication".
