  1. I think Chick still has plugins or other ways of doing ring modulation effects though he doesn't use them much now. He plays his own sampled Rhodes on a Yamaha Motif these days, because it's easier portability, I thjink he said in an interview he was worried about his Rhodes from the 80's going out of tune.
  2. Yes, I have one of the sets on CDR from the 25th, and the setlist is mostly familiar tunes from the Second Quintet era, but as stated above, played rather differently, and pretty free
  3. I'm watching a Tony Williams Quintet performance from the Mt. Fuji Jazz Fest in 1989, and Braden replaces Bill Pierce. Did Braden replace Pierce on much of the '89 tour or just that gig in Japan?
  4. Prayers to Marcus and his band!
  5. If there was more stuff like the second half of "Components" in your dream, that would have been wonderful!!
  6. Thanks Hans. Did the estate sign off on it?
  7. I don't think so. What grey label release is it this time? Dragon's 4 CD issue of the Stockholm concerts is legit, but I think the only "legit" bootleg releases of Miles we'll be seeing for thje time being is Sony's series. After the 1969 set I don't see them going backwards, but maybe something from the Pangaea/Aghartha band.
  8. I haven't checked out any releases on Smalls records but hear their excellent.
  9. I have the ECM Touchstones "Special Edition", so I would like to have the other albums in the set so I will probably get it at some point. It would be time Abercrombie's "M" gets released on CD. I heard some of it almost 10 years ago.
  10. RIP. Was listening to "Page One" the other day
  11. yeah, socks are cool
  12. I'd say after those photos Jim, that the cover of the forthcoming set, the photo is of that vintage, with the hairline and all.
  13. If we could see the shirt, maybe...
  14. I like the cover!
  15. A great set. "Oh Baby!" and "Understanding" are my favorite albums from the set.
  16. Winwood is a great musician. One of the highlights of Santana's "Hymns For Peace" DVD/Blu Ray is his version of "Why Can't We Live Together".
  17. Me too, eventually!
  18. I really like the point Epistrophy makes about Garrison being rhythmically assymetric but his melodic sense comes from the "inside". I can hear what you're talking about and it makes a lot of sense. Also provoking to think Trane was less rhythmically free compared to Wayne and Sonny. I can understand that, too.
  19. Absolutely interesting point made about Grenadier and I agree. He's always been really rock solid as a bassist, and I saw him live with Pat Metheny and Jack DeJohnette where his drive was really strong on inside or outside. IMO with all of the bassists Pat has used he's next to Steve Rodby in terms of that rock solid quality, they have such a natural hookup.
  20. Higgins groove on this I always thought of as a precursor to drum n bass, which I wonder if maybe this track was an influence to drum n bass producers.
  21. Orrin Keepnews is never wrong,is he?
  22. One of the greatest trainers ever. Never been a huge fan of the Klitschko brothers style, but Emmanuel did such great work with them. I think it's a shame that the fighter he really invested time in was Andy Lee, who is not anywhere near the level Steward had hoped, I think the TKO loss to Chavez Jr. proved it.
  23. Literally your probably right. But in reality Blue Note bears negligible relationship to the label Shorter originally recorded for. Maybe when they re-booted the label in the early eighties with the opening of the vaults -and got some of the old-guard back - it might have felt like a return of sorts. But not now. Imagine them recording Freddie Redd today. They'd probably have to do a google search to find out who he is. Exactly. I have noticed Don Was' knowledge seemingly lacking about the history of the artists, like him not realizing just how much of a force JOS was. To me, as it's been for a while, this seems more an extension of the Blue Note circa '73-76, not the classic Lion/Wolff era. I say that because they are broadening their scope to many musics and just using Blue Note as a brand name.
  24. Odyssey of Iska?
