  1. fats waller, sun ra. i find it hard to accept most of the blue note 1960's/70's (and other labels - what the people on this board call 'greasy') organ oriented cd's as being jazz. seems more like plain soul music than anything else. played by more competent musicians, but it's rarely jazz.

Pharoah has a bass clarinet. ←

    Basie Tenormen

there may exist a 45 rpm record of Herschel Evans as leader, or playing with non-basie personnel.

    bass clarinet

chico freeman plays a decent bass clarinet. pharoah sanders sometimes plays an instrument that looks like a short soprano sax (or a clarinet? hard to tell), but it sounds like a bass clarinet.

    Ron Burton

i don't know why burton left the band. but i doubt that he was asked to leave. how is that Michael Carvin 'the camel' with burton and calvin hill.
  11. the only ones that i've checked out are joe matt - who's quite funny; and harvey pekar - whos sense of humor does not come across in his writing.
  12. but wasn't blythe performing without a piano player in those days? i have him in 1980-84, and his lineup is cello and/or guitar; drums; tuba. he had a steady group of sidemen in 80-82. i don't have anything with him as-leader in 83, but i have one item from late 84, and it's with his usual band (wadud, stewart, calvin bell).
  13. Arthur Blythe 4/6/84 Village Vanguard, NYC 1. Stay As Sweet As You Are 2. As Of Yet 3. unk.title John Hicks-p Reggie Workman-b Bobby Battles-d is this the correct year. it's not listed on rick lopez' reggie workman discography. maybe more like 1994? thanks
  14. looking for Audiocontrol ten series three equalizer in excellent condition.
  15. i think that one of the bh biographies uses some of Linda Kuehl's research. if you put together all the biographies about her, you get a pretty good overview of her life.
  16. studio tunes from various albums, including the alternate takes: Nature Boy (the alternate take) Consequences -from First Meditations Feelin' Good Dear Lord Living Space -without the strings overdubs very accessible tunes by coltrane 1965 standards. and Consequences always reminded me of Equinox. for his studio recordings, the 1960-64 period is still my favorite. >>replace above 'Consequences' with 'Compassion' from the same suite.

    MONK PLAYS CHOPIN

ok, i have access to my info. there is a longer version of this session in circulation. the guy runs through many tunes, including quite a few monk tunes. and it's definitely not monk playing.
  18. i checked the jutb 1946 versions, and there's no armstrong vocal on them. i thought that the box would have what you're talking about, because it has a note after the n.o. tunes: "note: these are the original studio recordings. Most previous issues are from the actual soundtrack and also include overdubbed talking." so, the carnegie hall 1947 version seems to be the only one with b.h. and l.a. on vocals. the only other possibility is the 1946 version, which, according to billieholiday.be, is not on the film, and not on jutb: 30-sep-46 1'52''

    MONK PLAYS CHOPIN

i can't look at the notes about this item now, but wasn't there at least one other mp3 on that site, "joy to the world"(?), that they've since taken down. that one wasn't monk either. i believe that i was told that the monk family got a batch of nica's recordings, and sifted through them. she recorded other musicians at her house, as well as monk, so a mistake could be made. i just don't hear monk's distinctive playing on this mp3, especially during the few seconds before the chopin piece starts - which, in this case, would probably be the easiest place to identify him.

    MONK PLAYS CHOPIN

i don't hear any monk there. i think a researcher suggested that it might be Barry Harris.
  21. i think the b.h. soundhills box set has what you're looking for. that's JUTB in discographies.
