  1. yes, all studio. basically the original lp with bonus tracks, put into a 'correct' sequence order. whoever wrote the description on the storyville site must have been drunk. details of the studio dates are in the attachment below. thanks my people as actually performed on-stage here assembled from various studio recordings
  2. it seems that all sources -amazon reviews, storyville, and the above posts- are purposely(?) vague about the contents of this release. the original lp is studio with strayhorn on piano, and duke sidemen. i still can't figure out if this new cd is supposed to be the studio lp with studio bonus tracks, or a live performance (no duke/no strayhorn/no duke sidemen) with some studio filler for missing portions. conflicting statements in the above posts. either way, duke's not on it.
  3. i now have the back cover of the THE CHARLES MINGUS MEMORIAL ALBUM Burning Desire MBDRM010 can anyone confirm that track 5 "Danny's Beat" (2:49) is not the mingus group. thanks

i can confirm that the easily available 4 cd box called "Tresors" is an exact duplicate of 1: Bechet Creole Blues (1949-50) 2: In the Groove (1950-51) 3: Petite Fleur (1951-52) 4: Embraceable You (1952) from the above box set. and a slight date correction old 5: Nuages (1952-54) new 5: Nuages (1953-54)
  5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeUWgwCH3F4 1965 berlin at about 5:50 tyree glenn starts off with 'without a song' and then turns in a very entertaining solo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzOvJ8wYA1I from australia 1963 dvd Arvell Shaw solos on How High The Moon, and almost scrambles the video camera signal in the process.
  6. http://malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com/2013/07/stan-bernard-interviews-malcolm-x.html here is a good debate. towards the end of the text, malcolm debates this poor Gordon Hall guy into the ground, as far as i can tell. malcolm's just too logical for most of the people who he encountered. too bad there's no audio of this debate.
  7. spike's movie, as deficient as it is, is the best biopic i've ever seen. biopics are usually quite bad. the Bayard Rustin debate is included in this dvd. it's an unusually good malcolm x debate, because Bayard Rustin uses logic to back malcolm into a corner. there's a great dvd of audio video malcolm, almost complete. only $20. http://malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com/2006/08/malcolm-x-collected-speeches-1960-1965.html they actually undersell the amount of short video clips. i counted about 1hr40min of short video clips. note: the video portions are mp4, and will not play on a regular dvd player. need either a media player, or play on your computer. the audio speeches are mp3. malcolm x is at his best after he left the noi. before that he was kind of brainwashed by the teachings of the noi leader. luckily for us, most of the preserved malcolm x speeches are from 1964/65 - after the split with the noi.
  8. the funky tunes on the live cd3 -at the bitter end, nyc 1971 are as good as the funky tunes on 1972 'live' album release (recorded 1971). but on this new material, the bass guitar is muddy, and is in the background. doesn't seem that they were able to get the multitracks - sound quality is completely different. willie weeks' bass solo on 'Voices Inside' is not nearly as good as on the well known version. as for hathaway's mellow tunes, well, they just suck.

what years does the 6cd version cover? it would be strange for them to release a 9cd from 49-58, and then also release a distilled 6cd version covering the same frame. i don't think that alternate takes is a factor, as i'm guessing that neither box has alternates. there has to be a 9cd version, because these catalog numbers are for 9 cd's 1169512/522/532/542/552/572/582/592/602

from an online bechet listing: " Subsequently Vogue issued a CD box comprising all Bechet's studio recordings (*), but - in general - the 'master takes' only. (* = The box number is 74321165972, and the individual CD numbers (although I do not think the individual elements have been officially released) are 1169512/522/532/542/552/572/582/592/602) " what is the name of this box set? thanks
  12. as some have pointed out, i'm sorry to have started this thread. it's just naming anyone who has played the bass clarinet. i guess i'm interested in the *type of music* being played by a group with a bass clarinet as one of the soloists on all versions of spiritual and less so on india from coltrane's 1961 village vanguard box. and also on 'springtime' from dolphy's 6/11/64 paris show. i'm sure that everyone has the coltrane box, and here is 'springtime' from dolphy's 6/11/64 paris show. his solo starts at about 10min into the tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjgSHCGBh2o thanks
  13. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9udeWOjjls at about 16minutes into this 1988 documentary, there's a 1min clip of monk playing with haynes, Abdul-Malik(?), and rouse in a u.s. club. probably 5-spot 1958? looks like one of those march of time type promos. it's not mentioned in sheridan's book. is a longer version of this available anywhere? thanks
  14. to me, no other instrument in the world sounds as good as when dolphy plays the bass clarinet on the above named tunes. i've checked out david murray live material. it left me unimpressed.
  15. My favorite dolphy is his bass clarinet playing on all versions of spiritual and india from coltrane's 1961 village vanguard box, and on 'springtime' from dolphy's 6/11/64 paris show. Is there another musician who plays the bass clarinet in this fashion?

  17. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJvKSfr_S24 at 5min into the above video, it does look like it could be the same person as in the photo. that's john goldsmith on drums in the video. it's not robert shy. he can be seen here: http://www.thirteen.org/soul/october-4-1972/#.UlE5DRajBhA and on the 1972 montreux video. it's also not sonny brown, who is in this video kirk 1975 montreux. https://www.google.com/search?lr=&safe=active&as_qdr=all&q=rahsaan+kirk+montreux+1975&oq=rahsaan+kirk+montreux+1975&gs_l=serp.3...1344.1344.0.1610.1.1.0.0.0.0.110.110.0j1.1.0....0...1c.1.29.serp..1.0.0.-FpafR65nX4
  18. the photographer is Michael Wilderman. he does not know who the guy on the right is, but he thinks that it's the drummer. it could also be the drummer John Goldsmith in the photo.
  19. The only non-hendrix rock music that i have is Lou Reed's 1978 u.s. tour. Maybe now rca will finally release the complete live sessions for the May 1978 bottom line, nyc "Live: Take No Prisoners" album. I've been wating for years.
  20. to the right of rahsaan roland kirk. it may be the drummer sonny brown, but not sure if it's even a drummer in the photo. could be a percussionist/conga player. photo is from 1974/1975. thanks
  21. 1st tune "Moon Child" is that Leon Thomas on vocal? some discographies list pharoah on the vocal for this tune, but it's not him. at least one web page agrees that it's thomas http://www.kalamu.com/bol/2010/01/18/leon-thomas-%E2%80%9Cleon-thomas-mixtape%E2%80%9D/ here is a link to the tune. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkSb94zqZnE https://play.spotify.com/search/pharoah%20sanders%20moon%20child thanks
  22. first there was Storyville "100 Years-Forever Young" 2011 with new material. hidden in the lester young corner. now we have A Day With Satchmo - August 1, 1957 complete studio session. available on itunes only, released over a year ago. no mention on this site. https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/a-day-with-satchmo/id547067334 i come this this site to look for new info, would be great if there was better reporting.
  23. thanks. most of the labels on the vinyl copies list "Lumkili" as on side b only. but i found at least one that lists this tune as split across two sides. it's hard to make out. i saw a better photo yesterday, but can't find it now. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PHAROAH-SANDERS-LIVE-AT-THE-EAST-LP-French-1973-/321150250668?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item4ac60beeac#ht_627wt_609
  24. it seems that some lp pressings list "Memories of Coltrane" as 18min instead of 12min. is this just an error? link to lp label that says 12min http://www.cdandlp.com/item/2/0-240402-0-1-0/115121151/pharoah-sanders-live-at-the-east.html link to back cover that says 18min http://www.ebay.com/itm/PHAROAH-SANDERS-Live-at-the-East-jazz-LP-on-IMPULSE-orig-PROMO-wlp-NM-SUPERB-/380726984644?pt=Music_on_Vinyl&hash=item58a518bfc4 thanks
  25. The recent Storyville "100 Years-Forever Young" included tracks from a December, 1953 Boston date, but that is with Gildo Mahones on piano, not Horace Silver. too bad this Storyville "100 Years-Forever Young" info wasn't posted in the 'new releases' section 3 years ago.
