  1. yes, that guy doesn't make many mistakes, but this is a big one.
  2. last man standing.
  3. No, they weren't. Even Last Date was a studio recording with in-house applause. But, Naima and Unrealized Tapes were both studio sessions. Naima and Unrealized Tapes is the same session, recorded in a radio studio. Right. Not a "live" date. What part of "studio" isn't clicking? try reading my replies in posts #58 and #59 again, maybe this time you will see the fault in your logic, but i doubt it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Here_Comes_the_Whistleman "Here Comes the Whistleman is a live album by jazz multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk recorded in March 1965 at Atlantic Studios in New York"
  4. from another discography http://internet.cybermesa.com/~quemazon/DOLPHY.DSC.txt Eric Dolphy Quartet: "Last Date" 64-0602 Hilversum, Netherlands, 2 June, 1964 "This is a studio recording with an audience of company employees used to make the session sound like a live concert date." so, would that be a live recording or a studio recording. kirk recorded 'here comes the whistleman' under basically the same conditions (but with more guests), and i consider it a live recording. they don't stop in the middle of takes, almost never do multiple takes. no inserts. no engineer calling out takes. no producer. a radio station is not a proper studio. all those rock bbc recordings - i've always consider them live.
  5. No, they weren't. Even Last Date was a studio recording with in-house applause. But, Naima and Unrealized Tapes were both studio sessions. Naima and Unrealized Tapes is the same session, recorded in a radio studio. none of the below four dates were for a proper studio album. http://adale.org/Discographies/LateED.html last 4 dolphy dates after the mingus tour: RTF, Paris, France, 28 May 1964 "S&T list this as a radio broadcast" New Sound Club, Poort van Kleef, Eindhoven, Netherlands, 1 June 1964 V.A.R.A. studio 5, Hilversum, Netherlands, 2 June 1964 "This is sort of a studio recording made for radio broadcast" issued as Last Date Unknown radio studio, Paris, 11 June 1964
  6. these were all live recordings. his bcl solo on 'springtime' is one of my favorites. i like miles 'doo-bop'. there are 2-3 tunes on there that i always enjoy. i can't say as much for any of the other miles 1980's-90's releases.
  7. recorded miles shows after montreux '91 July 8, 1991 Casino, Montreux, Switzerland July 10, 1991 La Grande Halle, Villette, Paris, France July 14, 1991 Statenhal, Congressgebouw, Den Haag, The Netherlands July 16, 1991 Jardin des Arenes de Cimiez, Nice, France July 17, 1991 Jardin des Arenes de Cimiez, Nice, France July 19, 1991 Royal Festival Hall, London, UK July 21, 1991 Chapiteau, Andernos, France July 23, 1991 Stadio Olimpico, Rom, Italy July 24, 1991 Piazza del Giorgione, Castelfranco Veneto, Italy July 26, 1991 Wiltz Theatre, Chateau de Wiltz, Wiltz, Luxembourg July 27, 1991 Uno City, Wien, Austria August 22, 1991 Arvey Field, Chicago, USA August 24, 1991 Concord Pavilion, Concord, USA August 25, 1991 Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, USA http://www.kind-of-blue.de/seiten/sessions/1991.htm i'll try to check this paris concert out. i'd like to see All Blues and It's About That Time.
  8. http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/nat-music/audio/20145088/slugs-saloon good audio interview with the owner of slug's. and his lee morgan story at the end which should probably be cross posted over to the recent lee morgan thread.
  9. i like that i didn't have to sign up for this bft or download links. just at my convenience went to web and listened. more people would participate if this way of listening could be done more often on bft's. this is a good example of a site where you can just upload a tune for anyone to listen (small size uploads, so has to be like 128bit rate mp3) http://picosong.com/ there are probably other sites that can upload bigger sized files.
  10. tune is 3:55 if the timings on the web are correct, then it's not on these either. Of Mythic Worlds Mayan Temples 7:48 Over The Rainbow 5:15 Inside The Blues 5:45 Intrinsic Energies 8:40 Of Mythic Worlds 12:55 Song of the Stargazers 1. The Others In Their World 10:14 2. Somewhere Out 4:40 3. Distant Stars 1:01 4. Duo 3:04 5. Seven Points 4:49 6. Cosmo Dance 6:31 7. Galactic Synthesis 9:52 i'm leaning towards 1979 being the recording date.
  11. I would try these first, because they seem to be the most mysterious sun ra 1970's releases as far as recording dates. http://wayback.archive.org/web/20040211002326/http://www.dpo.uab.edu/~moudry/discintr.htm 85. 12. Not sure. Porter, maybe? I think I still have it, I'll have to check. probably not porter, because he contributed to the fujioka discography in which there is a photo of jc smoking, with the approximate quote that i gave earlier: 'despite giving up drugs and alcohol, coltrane continued to smoke [cigarettes] for the rest of his life'.
  13. I like the idea of jc circa 1962-1965, after coming home from an overly serious impulse recording session, walking around his house wearing only boxer shorts, drinking wine straight out of the bottle with one hand and dragging his tenor sax behind him with the other (the sax making marks in the hardwood floor). Yelling at alice to go get some more to drink from the liquor store before it closes.
  14. i think that i recently saw a quote in either the early fuji discography or the jc reference, something like: 'despite giving up drugs and alcohol, coltrane continued to smoke [cigarettes] for the rest of his life'. i think the consensus is that he stopped drinking.
  15. yes, there are sun ra completists who have all the releases. i think the sun ra item is either 1973, or 1978-79. it's the only item in this bft that i recognize as having in my collection.
  16. 6. i think is sun ra mid-1970's. i have this recording somewhere, even if it's not sun ra.
  17. gone
  18. "... for the first time on any format..." this is true. 10-14: May 17, 1958. this bonus broadcast has been released many times before. 20. well, that solved a 20 year mystery. thanks
  21. 1 http://picosong.com/cvLb/ first recording would probably be before 1974. the style sounds like early 70's blue note/CTI/Hank Crawford tune? 2 http://picosong.com/cv2N pat metheny 3 http://picosong.com/cv2T pat metheny since metheny likes ornette coleman, maybe they are coleman tunes? 4 http://picosong.com/cv27 1950's? 5 http://picosong.com/cvVY Joe Diorio guitar and probably Attila Zoller guitar. sounds a bit like diorio's "Talla Sunshine - Naima Rainbow, Dance for Their Father", but it's not the same tune. 6 http://picosong.com/cvVf only the 1950's? tune was definitely released on a record, which is heard here. it's possible that the other tunes were never recorded by anybody. thank you
  22. i have the complete concert arias decca 5cd box, but can't find any reference on the web to a box of arias from the complete operas (don giovanni, magic flute, etc.) does such a thing exist. preferably the female arias only. thanks
  23. >>.She recalled the time when a well known jazz musician passed and he was asked to play at the funeral. Lee told her that he could not do it because he did not have any shoes.>>> yes, this makes me want to believe the whole interview. they always paint themselves as saviors. it's like there's a 'how to' book for wives of dead musicians that they all check out from the local library.
  24. obviously a great comic, but a terrible film actor. i did like these movies that he was in The World According to Garp The Survivors (1983) (this is a hidden gem) Moscow on the Hudson The Fisher King
