  1. I'm not sure which decade(s) I'm stuck in, but some of the Japanese labels seem to be doing a good job of not compromising the music.
  2. Not that I disagree, but which label is the pre-eminent jazz label???
  3. Eric, I happened to get both of these books using a Borders gift card given to me a couple months back. Haven't read either one, but heard lots of positive things about both. Please let us know what you think of them. I just finished The White Tiger. It is a real page-turner! I didn't quite read it in one sitting, but maybe three. It's really interesting, has lots of local color (the detail this writer goes into about the lives of the poor servant class in India!), and is written with a kind of sardonic wit. It is also kind of Bizarro-world version of Crime and Punishment, which is made apparent about 15-20 pages in, but I don't want to go into detail here. At the same time, I don't think I would read it more than once. It's got one thing to say, says it brightly/sharply, and then slinks off. Maybe it would benefit from repeated readings, but I don't think so. It is more of a surface-type book. The Bolano looks like one you might want to read more than once (if anyone had the time of course). Far more consciously literary, has more depth, etc. I will be able to start this one more seriously later next week. I'm more than half-way through 2666 (approx. 900 pages total). It's well worth it IMHO.
  4. They're coming out west too.
  5. Turkey mole Grapefruit, red onion, olives, pesto, balsamic salad
  6. Jeanne Lee
  7. A little further research reveals that it was released in 2007 & actually did about 4.5 million at the box office.
  8. This movie came out well over a year ago. It didn't do anything at the box office. I watched it on DVD a few weeks ago & enjoyed it. Agree that the ending is too drawn out. Cheadle is great. Wonder if the rumor about him doing a Miles bio-pic. will ever come true.
  9. Never reissued on CD - right????
  10. Shouldn't this be a question? No - because he was.
  11. Good book. He lives here, & I see him out & about at book signings, restaurants, etc..
  12. McLean If I could get 2, the other would be Mobley.
  13. I read the Lily Allen article. She's just fine, but what does she have to do with Keith Jarrett?
  14. Tony Fruscella: Complete Studio & Live Sessions (4 CD set)
  15. The only "two" posters I've ever put on ignore. You know who "they" are.
  16. My son gave me this for Xmas in a paperback 3 volume boxed edition. I'm away from home right now and took the first volume (books 1-30) with me. I'm just getting into it but quite like it so far. Very well translated it seems to me. (ie the English is not in the least stilted-- can't tell that it's a translation-- though I of course can't say how close it is to the original.) Bolanos translator is quite amazing (IMHO).
  17. Now you should restart.
  18. Great movie!
  19. I answered you over at "that other place". I would add to this thread that their earlier CD, Shamokin', is also very good.
  20. I wasn't referring to your comment but to a previous one. Santa Fe is always nice. If you tour in the west, we'd be thrilled to present you. We'd probably use a venue other than a home, since I'd have trouble finding a home with a B-3.
  21. Nice list. Chicago Overtones is good too.
  22. We present several "in home" jazz concerts a year. I can assure you the musicians are paid & enjoy the events. The implication that this is condescending to the musicians & the music is offensive.
