So if her music was "better" her lifestyle wouldn't matter. I don't give a "hoot" about the Grammys (any category). I just enjoy both of her CDs.

That's not the point. Has nothing to do with song writing or type of musical material. Many addicted jazz artists never went to rehab. A good number just died prematurely. FWIW, I believe she has now gone to rehab., for whatever good it will do. I know she's a substance abuser, but I don't recall heroin being the offending drug. Did you stop listening to Miles, Getz, Trane, Mobley, Blakey, Sonny Clark, Warne Marsh, etc., etc., etc. until they cleaned up? I didn't. If one doesn't care for the music, that's fine. I just don't believe that lifestyle should determine who you listen to, read, or even the paintings you look at. jazzshrink (or anyone else) can use that as a determining factor. I don't.

That viewpoint must severely limit your jazz listening.

I have 2 of the 3 Cohrans & the Melvin Jackson. All worthwhile. You should add the Bosco CD to your list.

I received an e-mail too. However, all it basically said was that it could take up to 21 days for an order to arrive. They didn't answer my question about what shipping / mailing method was used. FWIW the order is still not here, although today's mail has not yet arrived. Order was placed on Jan. 21 & apparently shipped on Jan. 23.

Well, I agree that the USPS stinks. They (Newbury) could answer my e-mail. They used to. If the order does not arrive Monday, I'll try calling them.

I ordered Jan. 21, received a confirmation from them. However the order is still not here. I e-mailed them with (so far) no response. Not my previous experience, except the last time I ordered. That also took a long time to arrive, although it eventually did. Just wonder if they've switched from 1st class to media mail to save a few pennies.

You know what's really funny about this, they could just levee the cut against our current taxes, but everyone knows then people wouldn't spend it. So they cut a check instead... I've ordered many times from Newbury Comics. CDs used to arrive in 2-4 days. The last 2 times I've ordered it's taken much longer. My present order is currently 12 days old & still not here. I e-mailed & so far have not received an answer. Comments??

I am a big fan of the Burke series. Love the first four or five, indeed as noire as they come. My favourite modern crime novelist is James Crumley. To quote The Guardian, 'The poet laureate of American hard-bioiled literature'. The Last Good Kiss by Crumley is one of the all-time best in the genre.

In a more "traditional" vein - Gianni Basso on the Philogy label.

I've heard him live with Eddie Daniels among others. Just listened to a CD he's on led by Joan Stiles called Hurly Burly. He sounds excellent as does the rest of the CD.

One of my favorite novels of 2007. Probably mentioned earlier in this thread - maybe even by me. I wouldn't go through the 100 previous pages in the thread either.

The Village Voice just raved about this, and I was considering checking it out. Let us know if it lives up to the hype. I'm just about done with Rushdie's Haroun and the Sea of Stories. Wanda Coleman's book of short stories is definitely worthwhile. Complex, moving writing.
