  2. So I added an $8.79 ENJA CD to my pre-existing order of the October/November BN's, as it showed no additional shipping charge. What they did, rather than charge me the additional $8.79, was to cancel my original order and re-do an order with the additional CD, which came out to $18.75 more, I guess due to the change in exchange rates since I placed the last order. So I have buyer's remorse on that one, and won't do that again.

    Frank Zappa

"Freak Out", "Absolutely Free", "We're Only in It For the Money", "Ruben and the Jets", and "Uncle Meat"? Yes. From that point on? No, except for the occasional song.
  4. Amazon also has it for $27.98. Importcds will likely be a good bit cheaper. I'm on the fence at best about this one at the going price.

I also hope they do something with the Waka Jawaka/Grand Wazoo works, and still need to pick up that Hot Rats box (wish it didn't have the garbage in it to inflate the price). Can't stand his lyrics from Flo/Eddie forward, they're mostly moronic, crudity for shock value. He actually had something to say on the Verve albums.
  6. Which Blue Notes do you have in mind? I found the Warner Bros. Mwandishi recordings a (good) stretch, but the Blue Notes were, to me, just things of beauty.
  7. The shame is that Fantasy had finally gotten the collation thing right just before they sold out to Concord (Evans Vanguard, Stitt's Bits, the three Coltrane boxes, Miles Quartet box, Monk 1957, Garland Prelude, etc.). Concord's idea is more like the 34 minute "... Plays for Lovers" CD's
  8. It's track #7 from this . I actually own the album and like it quite a bit, and Wayne was Wayne already in his Jazz Messengers phase. But that track is a throwaway to my ears.
  9. BFT 211 Thanks for the BFT. Looks like you sought to have something for everybody (my friend Dan Gould will likely be pleased by several of the cuts), so much of it left me fairly cold, but a few cuts, especially #2 and #7, really caught my ear. Look forward to the review on them. No need to put a response to each of my comments, but feedback on #4 and #7 would be greatly appreciated! 1 – Outside my range. 2 – Nice stuff, really enjoyable. Not sure who it is, and don’t think I have it on the shelves. 3 – Reminds me of some of those Vogue sessions from the 50’s. Lucky Thompson? 4 – Doesn’t hit for me. Pianist, clearly inspired by Jarrett can really play, but makes a few strange note choices. Trumpet does nothing for me. The sax player sounds like Michael Brecker, so I guess the trumpet is Randy? Percussionist does that Guilherme Franco thing, which I find annoying. Is this a Hal Galper album? If so, a long way down from the magical stuff he did with the Brecker Bros. in the late 70’s. 5 - Pleasant, but doesn’t keep my attention. 6 – Don’t like the electronics or the pulse on this. Too mechanical and synthed up. Everybody involved can play, just not my thing. 7 - Now we’re talking. Really like this! Killer, imaginative version. Hard to go wrong with that tune, and they don’t. Guitarist sounds like Pat Martino, but I’m not aware of him doing a trio version of this. 8 – “Stolen Moments” of course. Sounds like Kenny Burrell, but I can’t find this version. 9 – Lost on me. 10 – Pleasant enough. 11 – Fleet. I know the composition, but have brain freeze. 12 – “Cherokee” of course. Very competent. 13 – “Willow Weep for Me”. Also very competent. 14 – I like this one, though the ensembles could have maybe used a little more rehearsal. Nice groove, and the solos are good. 15 – The guitar player needs to be banished. I pretty much like everything else about the cut, but the guitar ruins it for me. 16 and 17 – Please make them go away! 18 – Getting to know you, too! Very pleasant, nothing remarkable to my ears.
  10. Hubbard and especially Williams did some pretty frequent part time work in those fields in the 80's.
  11. This one? Love it:
  12. I agree with you on several points. The Jackson is my favorite BN, and it's always been shocking to me how clueless the horns sound on the 1947 "Round Midnight". I like the Prestige sessions a lot, especially "Friday the 13th" with Newk and Julius Watkins.
  13. Great topic. My understanding is that Tina Brooks' 'True Blue' sold under 1,000 copies, and that was the reason Blue Note did not release the other albums he recorded at the time.
  14. And check out the early 70's Heath albums on Muse.
  15. Please report back after!
  16. That's some of what was so exciting about the music of those times!
  17. The websites for importcds, deepdiscountcd, and popmarket are all currently offline, so obviously running on the same server farm. Any other companies we suspect fall into that umbrella?

    Billy Gault

And Donald Byrd (with Gigi Gryce) made two. Don't know if that was also part of it

I also like that one. Not a lost classic or anything, but a good listen and imaginative music.
  20. Understood. I play my music 90% of the time on an $80 Sony boombox, listening through $60 Sennheiser headphones.
  21. But do Lee Morgan and Woody Shaw sound best at low volume?
  22. Tom, sorry to hear about your job loss (I can relate). There are probably others who have suggestions which involve bluetooth and wireless headphones, but I don't do any of that, so not sure. Or maybe something like this would work: https://www.amazon.com/30S1-01260-Stereo-Female-Y-Cable-Connector/dp/B000I23TTE/ref=asc_df_B000I23TTE/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309708743736&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7733095689609765832&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003711&hvtargid=pla-406644626775&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=60510342446&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=309708743736&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=7733095689609765832&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9003711&hvtargid=pla-406644626775
  23. Grab yourself a $60 set of Sennheiser headphones, and crank it up!
