  1. Certain releases merit an extra dose of hype. This is as perfect as archival CD releases get. I could get hyped about both. Though a lot of additional material came out on the Elvin Lighthouse CD's, and I can live without endless drum solos. Love Gene Perla's work with that group.
  2. Yeah, I have been familiar with those albums since the 70's, and come by my ambivalence for them on my own, no critics necessary. I actually think Alice was tremendous with Trane. and "got" where he was headed (as did Rashied Ali). I like the Japan album and 'Interstellar Space' (and 'Meditations') plenty, it's the post-'Meditations' albums with McCoy and Elvin (and 'Expression', which seems to be yet another change in direction) which leave me uneasy. I own them all, and they are certainly "interesting", but my go-to's are 'Crescent' or 'Live at Birdland' ( and where are the rest of those tapes?) or 'Transition', depending on mood.
  3. 1 - Of course it will get raves, and it should get raves for all the right reasons. 2 - I did not buy the Mosaic Morgan/Mobley/Henderson releases of recent years, but did buy this. This has 5 CD's of newly released material and costs less than half of what Mosaics cost per disc (plus is better suited for real-world shelf storage). 3 - Rooster WANTS to be talked into buying this. Just trying to help him fulfill his wisdom-filled wishes . True that. And not like you get to hear Bennie Maupin stretch out like this in many (any?) other places in this type of company. And Harold Mabern was in the house.
  4. Special set at tremendous price. Lee Morgan. Prime Blue Note. $8 a disc.
  5. This is not the instance to exercise self-restraint.
  6. Tyner and Elvin were on the outs at that point. Live in Seattle has a very disconcerting vibe, and Om is a nightmare. And this is Trane's most beloved work done in that atmosphere. And you can't unhear it once you hear it.
  7. What are people's thoughts on the sound compared to the 3CD box?
  8. Look forward to this with both anticipation and dread. Hearing Carlos Ward on the piece adds another variable.
  9. Arrived from Importcds today. Beautiful set, listening to Bennie Maupin's solo on July 10 "The Beehive" right now.
  10. Gary Bartz - Libra; Freddie Hubbard - Backlash; Stan Getz - The Master; Dizzy Reece - Manhattan Project; Art Farmer - The Time and the Place; Walt Dickerson - To My Queen Revisited.
  11. Gallagher's (Oasis), Fogerty's (Creedence), Knopfler's (Dire Straits).
  12. True pioneers. My biggest thrill in Nashville was to visit RCA Studio B. Some guy named Elvis something recorded most of his output there, but what really hit me was that "this is where the Everly Brothers recorded Cathy's Clown!". BTW, Ryman Auditorium was also a surprisingly moving experience, and the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Johnny Cash Museum both greatly exceeded my expectations. Whole trip did a lot more to me than I thought it would. My wife and two of her co-workers had a prosthetics conference there and I had just tagged along to do the driving and share some time with her.
  13. Desperately in need of a CD issue.
  14. Importcd's still at $59.52 + $2.99 shipping. Amazon still at $71.99 .
  15. 1966 release, so the Europeans can't get it in the PD sets - those have a 1962 cutoff.
  16. I agree with all of that. My extensive experiences with importcds have been outstanding, but I understand others have had issues. Importcds is 59.46 + 2.99 shipping (or 1.49 for each item after first). They don't lower pre-order prices.
  17. Got my shipping confirmation from importcds. Won't see the set until next week, I'm sure, but saved $11 from Amazon price.
  18. Check out "Let My Children Hear Music" from the early 70's. A masterpiece.
  19. Alice and Ali were all in, where Tyner and Elvin were heading to the exits. I actually like Concert in Japan quite a bit, my go-to for that group (along with the VV Again "My Favorite Things").
  20. Recorded radio broadcast of George Russell in Venice, 1980. Amazing stuff.
  21. Correct. The last "new" title was the Horace Silver Music of the Spheres thing, LT-1033 in late 1980. The LT reissues went as late as Joe Pass - Joy Spring, LT-1103 in 1981.
