If memory serves me correctly, my first cut on my first BFT was Juju's "African Rhythms", hardly one for the purists.. But the neighborhood is still willing to listen and respond to what I lay out there. We had a participation crisis for these BFT's a couple years ago, but new guys like you have pumped fresh blood into it, and all is good.

Me too. I've rebought titles that I thought I had lost somehow, but had only gotten them missorted when moving around on shelves.

Collectables paired it with Luis Gasca's "The Little Giant" on one of those strange twofers. Do you have it filed under Gasca?

But will be limited to 5000 hauntings. And no secondary market, so be sure to pre-order if you are interested.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Not gonna earn me any coolness points in these parts, but I don't care. Beautiful music, especially the definitive version of West Side Story's "Maria". -
Hope they let you vote against her.

My compliments on the pacing/mood of this BFT. You seem to have put a good bit of thought into how the selections flow, and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. 1 – Tenor player plays well enough and the composition is good. Don’t particularly care for the singer, and not something I’d be drawn to. Something I could see Archie Shepp or David Murray doing. But tenor doesn’t really sound like either of them to me. 2 – Expertly played, though not of great interest to me. 3 – Pleasant interlude. 4 – “Lazy Afternoon”, one of my favorite tunes. This version is from Pete La Roca’s Blue Note album, ‘Basra’. Joe Henderson, Steve Kuhn, Steve Swallow. 5 – The first one I love on this BFT. Beautiful stuff, especially the pianist. Sure hope I already own this! edit: hooray, I do own it! 6 – Nice in and of itself, and makes a lovely trilogy with the previous two cuts. 7 – Pleasant enough, did not lift itself above background music for me. 8 – “Baltimore Oriole” by Sheila Jordan from her Blue Note ‘Portrait of Sheila’ album. Very very nice. 9 – “Sunny” from someone who has their Wes Montgomery clothes on. Later than Wes (note the Rhodes), and not George Benson or Grant Green. Certainly enjoyed this one. Guy’s all over the guitar, and the Rhodes player is also fine. Could be someone like Phil Upchurch? Well worth looking into, whoever it is. And own this! Should have thought of him! Got to meet the pianist 25 years later, quite a journey and very humble and kind man. 10 – Fun piece, quite the frantic pace. Give the drummer some. I could live without the tenor solo. 11 – A Dan Gould special. Very fleet and the combo is tight. 12 – This one is more boppish, #11 more soul-jazzish, and the rhythm section is more basic on this one, though fine. 13 - Yet another different approach to the piano trio, more free. The opposite of a tight rhythm section, feels, like they are each just doing their own thing. Love some of the cuts, found all interesting, and greatly look forward to the reveals on 5 and 9, thanks!

Would you set the volume control at 13?
felser replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The phrase my wife says to me second most often is "I love you". The only thing she says to me more often is "what's that volume at?". TV watching is 10. DVD's vary throughout. Nevet seem to do 13, though I don't have a superstitious bone in my body. -
Anyone know why they skipped over "Live/Dead" in the expanded reissue program? That's my favorite GD album, for old-times sake.

$5.68 cheaper at importcds.com minus shipping ($2.99 for single title, $1.49 per title additional after that). If the sound quality is decent, this seems like an early candidate for vintage issue of the year. Can't wait to hear it. @Joe, LOVE the "instabuy"!

It's a Quincy Jones production, and I also loved what Jones was doing at that point with Rufus ("Masterjam") and his own albums ("the Dude"). Plus some guy named Michael Jackson, with whom he made a couple of obscure albums ("Off the Wall" and the especially underexposed "Thriller").

I go one album further with Benson, to "Give Me The Night". It's not jazz per se, but it's superior music of its era (1980). Lost interest after that, but have almost everything he released as a leader up to that point, and derive a great deal of pleasure from most of it. And I also salute him for living life well and wisely.
