June 27 release. They were an interesting group, and Colin Hodgkinson was quite an amazing bass player, the star of the show. Think Jack Bruce's 'Things We Like' for a comparison touchpoint, but Bruce didn't hold a candle to Hodgkinson as a bass player. Cherry Red will do this one right, as always. Great, great record company.

My favorite Bartz album is this, just released in 2023 For 45 years,. my go-to Bartz was the amazing 'I've Known Rivers And Other Bodies', the great Milestone 2 LP set of his 1973 Montreux performance.

RIP, especially liked his work on the two Bartz - Harlem Bush Music albums. And he sounded good on the three Horace Silver - United States of Mind albums despite the painfully dated lyrics.

I have the Bellaphon CD, otherwise I'd be all over the DL day 1. Same with Glass Bead Games.

The Harper, Jordan, Cowell - Musa, and Tolliver Slugs and Loosdrecht would be my first recommendations, but the Vick and some others are also pretty great.

I believe that's true. I have all of this in various formats (from Mosaic sets to so-so Bellaphon and Japanese CD's down to ugly-sounding burns), but may be interested in some of the downloads for audio upgrade if the sound quality is good. But I'd prefer CD's, so will wait to see if more are planned. I have to think that at least Glass Bead Games and Capra Black would be strong CD candidates. And please, Mack Avenue, look into getting the rights to reissue the amazing Reasons in Tonality, one of my very favorite Strata-East releases. And it would be nice to finally see Alkebu-Lan in digital form.

I'll look to pick some of these over time, but will wait to see if more CD reissues are forthcoming. Have to think that Capra Black and Glass Bead Games at least would be likely CD candidates. I have almost all of these in some form, but definitely would welcome better fidelity on several. And please, get the rights to reissue Reasons in Tonality and Alkebu-Lan!

Discogs lists Huss Charles as being Denis's brother, but his credits all show him on percussion rather than drums. From the drumming, I have no problem believing it's Denis, but what you're sharing does seem to point to Huss, unless the announcer made an error.

They're solid ca. 1960 hard bop, but not up to BN standards and a step below Take 12. A lot of Vee Jay jazz albums always have struck me as the whole being less than the sum of the parts. Exceptions to that are the Eddie Harris and Wayne Shorter albums on the label.

Byrd then recorded 'Free Form' (my favorite album by him) on December 11, 1961, even though it wasn't released until 1966. I realize that has some modal tunes. The title track continues to blow my mind, and seems years ahead of its time.

Try playing it on a different player. I played cut 7 on my usual Sony player, and experienced the jumping in some places. I then played cuts 6 and 7 on an Arafuna portable CD player I use, which has a good anti-skip feature, and the cuts played fine except for one brief jump on cut 7, which could have been caused by my cat being around the player on the desk. The disc does not have great fidelity, but it's good enough (think of those live at the Left Bank CD's for comparison), and the music is pretty wonderful.
