What were typical sales for something like a Blue Note Mobley LP back in the 50's/60's? I remember reading that Tina Brooks' "True Blue" sold under 1000 copies when it came out back then, but can't verify that.

And an old cliche is the double album "that could have made a great single album". And a full CD is a double album in length. Of course, some of the sprawl of double albums was part of the thrill, but there are a lot of 75 minute CD's that don't have that artistic sense. 2 LP's of the Mothers of Invention's "Freak Out" had a purpose, as did Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde", the Allman Brothers's "Live at the Fillmore East" and "Eat a Peach", the White Album, the Byrd's "(Untitled)" etc etc etc regardless of what you thought of the purpose.

I don't claim to be representative of most people, but I have no problem with length provided the music justifies it to me (of course, totally subjective). Finishing up a 4CD/5 hour box set of Zoot Money 60's recordings right now, all done in one sitting while I work. Other things I can't stand 2 minutes of.

So anyways, back to Mingus.

Springsteen live is something very different from and beyond Springsteen on record. It's more than just the music. I never "got" Springsteen until I saw the No Nukes movie performances of "The River" and "Thunder Road. Then it all kicked in. And I still don't much like his studio albums from the past 35 years, but the Live in NYC 1999 set is on my desert island list. Possible also that he doesn't translate as well outside of the immediate NJ-Philly-NYC area, but he sang about our lives up here in the 70's.

Have you ever seen Springsteen live? Nothing like it.

No, just the original albums. Even the earlier box set didn't have that (I assume Neil Young was/is horrified by it), only that 2 LP anthology back in the early 70's. Loved the band, loved the song, love guitar jams, but I always thought that version was self-indulgent garbage.

The Mingus is spectacular in every regard and a great bargain.

I've heard the Carmen version, which is pretty good, have not heard the Dionne version, but like Marvin and Tammy said, "Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing", and I'll stick with the original, especially that stunning extended wordless outro, which has always been my ultimate EWF moment. And I'll stick with McRae's "Great American Songbook" 2LP set on Atlantic from three years earlier, which is the other kind of Carmen McRae album, though I've always always liked the idea of her work more than the reality of it.

Agreed. I have no use for the original album except for the fact that it is a 1963 Blue Note session. So it joins the ranks of Dodo Greene, Donald Byrd's "I'm Trying to Get Home", and "Jimmy Smith Plays Fats Waller" as Blue Notes from that era I don't actually see myself ever listening to again. But the bonus session is fine, fiery music.

I liked the way the LP labeling looked and the slogan. And there were some worthwhile albums during parts of that time, especially by Hutcherson/Land and Elvin Jones.

To each his own, for sure. I'm not a purist, have two box sets by Chic, Complete run of 70's/early 80's EWF, etc. And like John Klemmer's 'Touch" and Gato Barbieri's "Caliente", the early 70's Chuck Mangione albums, etc. But the Mizell stuff has never spoken to me, then or more recently. Glad it does to others like you. Have not heard the Foster Montreux album or that Marlena Shaw. I do like the Shaw Montreux album.

No real classics there. I'm familiar with almost all of those albums, and the only ones I can recommend at all are the Grant Green and the Hutcherson. And neither of those ranks particularly high in those artists' canons, though they are both plenty pleasant and listenable.
