Agreed. I also like "Tea for One" from that album quite a bit, but "Achilles Last Stand" is spectacular, to me the only truly GREAT track done after IV ("Stairway to Heaven", "The Battle of Evermore") and one of their half-dozen greatest, period.

IV and Presence have some great cuts on them, but some other stuff that does not hold up. I-III are solid. I want to get the remaster of I at some point to get the '69 concert.

I've been a fan since I first heard him on McCoy Tyner's Enlightenment Montreux set. Was thrilled to see him resurface playing so strongly.

Posting blind before reading the other comments. Thanks Tom, very enjoyable BFT with a wonderful flow, and I look forward to finding out the identities, especially on #'s 5 and 6. 1 – Great background music for a workday on the computer. I feel like the tenor player and pianist are names I should know well. Reminds me of the album Stan Getz did with Albert Dailey. 2 – That’s a good sound with the guitar on the ensemble passages. I like the composition, the alto player, and really like the drummer. The trumpet player, not so much. Recent vintage (which to me means anything in the last 25 years). 3 – I admire this greatly, but would not see myself ever actually deciding to put it on and listen to it, leaves me emotionally cold. Reminiscent of the stuff Mark Turner and Kurt Rosenwinkel were doing together. 4 – I also admire this one, and like it better than #3, but it still sinks into the background for me, as good as it is. 5 – Most assuredly did not fade into the background, I love this one! Timeless, could have been recorded in 1964 or 2014. Love the guitar (there is a LOT of guitar on this BFT!), but all of them are good. I’m going to guess it’s the guitar player’s album. Has the feel of some of the things Kenny Burrell was doing with larger groups in the 60’s, though this ensemble sounds larger than it actually is, I think. Also something of an early CTI feel to this. I look forward to seeking this one out if I don’t happen to already own it. The percussion stuff going on in the background is fascinating. 6 – GREAT trumpet solo. This is a wonderful cut! Is that Pepper Adams on baritone? Sounds like it could be the Jones/Lewis big band. Whatever it is, it needs to be in my collection ASAP. Ends far too soon. 7 – This whole sort of thing has always been lost on me. I don’t know, maybe someone like Hamiett Bluiett, who is just utterly hit or miss for me. This is miss by a mile, but that’s just me. 8 – Yeah, I can do this one. Gotta be the tenor player’s album, doesn’t it. I know I know him. The trumpet player is playing in a more vintage style, which indicates that the tenor player would be one of those transitional masters like Lockjaw Davis or Gene Ammons, unless they are modern-day ringers (blame it on Wynton). 9 – See comments for #4. Arranger’s record. 10 – Gotta enjoy this, you know! Good time music. Reminds me of some of those Lonnie Smith Blue Note sessions ca 1970, with the likes of Lee Morgan and George Coleman. 11 – That two tenor, bass, drums configuration is one of my favorite sounds in jazz. Elvin Jones was the master, though I don’t think this is him. But this is a treat.

I saw CSNY on that Tour at the Atlantic City Race Track with 100,000 close friends and neighbors. They were good, but the opening act was the awesome Leon Patillo/Tom Coster version of Santana, who blew CSNY off the stage..

The big issue wil be the sound quality/sourcing. I would not be shocked if a lot of the cuts are from vinyl sources.

Rooster Ties is being ironic. There has been massive controversy for decades on the Led Zeppelin writing credits, and I have generally found them "guilty as charged". And they most definitely are guilty here (I loved Spirit, play them a lot more than I play Led Zeppelin), on "Whole Lotta Love", on "Black Mountain Side", on "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You", on "How Many More Times" etc. They've even discreetly admitted so at times,with "amended" composition credits. They are hardly alone in that regard, but were incredibly blatant, and there was a lot of songwrting royalty money involved, so it has drawn a lot of attention.

Aren't there enough classic-era Blue Note completists to be able to make a go of it?

The Miles set is two discs, Coltrane and Brownie are both three. These are not budget priced. I don't understand who they think is going to buy these. Not like the music they contain is hard to find.

Coltrane would have Blue Train, A Blowin Session (Johnny Griffin) Sonny's Crib (Sonny's Crib), and Whims of Chambers (Paul Chambers), I guess. Anything else come to mind? I guess the Paul Chambers transition sessions and the live Monk session if they want to include those.

I'm not a fan of the Charly label, dreadful sound, often from vinyl. But the set will be interesting listening and broad in scope (120 different artists for the 269 cuts).

No CD resissue - I've been watching for it for decades.

I have a convoluted history with this box. Got one many many years ago which was mint perfect, but always sort of hated it due to the "unique" packaging. Traded it to another board member. Had trader's remorse as I was not able to replace some of the key albums from it with single discs, and was able to get a decent deal on a replacement box, but that one had some of the glue from the disc holders that got onto a couple of the discs. I was able to get the glue off the CD's OK and they play fine, but now I have acquired the generic Euro replacement, which I prefer, and have the big 18 disc Iron monstrosity available for sale or trade. The lowest I see it listed for is $300, and I see the two on ebay that sold went for $220/$225. I'd let it go for $200 or best reasonable offer in cash or trade, and will include (substantial) domestic shipping with that. Let me via PM know if any interest at all. If not, I'll just go out to ebay with it. Thx.
